AFCON 2024 Discussion thread

AFCON tournament kicks off on the 12th of January in Ivory Coast and promises to be a very exciting tournament with lots of stars on display. Here is a thread to discuss the tournament results, pitch side drama and make your predictions on which nation will go farthest.

Thank you for starting up this thread, I was about to start it off, but saw that you already have. Thumbs up!

I am repping Nigeria in the competition, I hope we win it. We have all it takes to win in terms of talented players, we have one of the hottest strikers in the world right now and current African Player of the year in our team. My only doubt remains our coach Jose Peseiro and if he will be able to use the players he has got properly.

I am looking out for Egypt too because they have a very special player that can turn things around in a moment.

Lots of upsets in yesterday's fixtures. Truly reflects the AFCON experience we have become used to from the previous tournaments. I definitely did not see Egypt literally scratching out a draw.

Would we have any upsets today? Maybe Cameroon?

Nice of you to have created this thread so that Africans and other  fans of AFCON around the world can comment on the ongoing AFCON tournament this year. I think this year tournament would be very much competitive amongst the contending nations but  the best of them goes home with the trophy.

I am cheering Nigeria to win the trophy because I strongly believe that the full team are well experienced coupled with their exposure to European league were they are playing for and the fact that African best presence is really involved in this year's tournament. Hopefully Nigeria would take the trophy. I am also looking at Egypt and Algeria to be amongst the top contenders for the AFCON trophy this tournament.

South Africa just loss out to Mali 2-0 and the way I am seeing this tournament, Mali might win this game because they are galant. Though Morocco is also there. South Africa missed their penalty. Mali even played more than south Africa players. I have not seen any team like Mali in this tournament but I am still waiting for Morocco because that is one of the strong team in the continent tournament.

Morocco is another  strong contending force I did not really mention. I perhaps skipped them because I have not really see them play of recently, they have good players as well. As for south Africa, I do not think they are going anywhere looking at their last match losing out to Mali. As you have said, since the beginning of this tournament, the few teams I have seen playing are very much in good form. I think Nigeria team would need to sit up and win their next match.

Morocco 3 - 0 Tanzania

Morocco is doing well on the pitch. They are playing to the expectations of fans, really I was expecting them to play like. This is the only club or team I know that will not disappoint gamblers expectations. Though Tanzania tried but they  {N. Miroshi} got red card and it really affected their performance on the field. R. Saiss from Morocco scored  the first goal and A. Ounahi and Y. En-Nesyri scored each and that made the 3 goals to 0. Morocco might win the cup. And I don't hope on Nigeria any of the forthcoming matches.

Today's game is going to be a cracker. The super eagles will be locking horns with the elephants, the host nation, who started their campaign on a winning note. It's a game I so much look forward to and a defeat from Ivory Coast will dampen the super eagles chances of making it to the next round of the competition. Judging from the stats, both are at tie but in recent meetings and form, the host nation has superiority. The super eagles were wasteful in front of goals against Equitorial Guinea, I really hope they bring their A-game today.

I have no idea who is going to win this AFCON, and I didnt have good results with my predictions of this competition.
There are lot of surprises in many groups but I expect Ivory Coast as host to go far, but today defeat from Nigeria was not going in their favor.
Egypt and Ghana didnt win a single match so far so both of them need a win for next stage.

Ivory Cast 0 - 1 Nigeria

I am very much excited as Nigeria is cruising to victory this time. We got three full point now and a last leg to qualify for the next round of the tournament. Looking at the performance statistics, Ivory coast got a high percentage advantage in performance  over Nigeria which shows that nigeria would have to go back to their drawing board to  put more effort in their training against their next encounter otherwise they would not likely get it cool like the other matches they have played with their opponent.

Nigeria should be removed from that pool here because I know that they won't go anywhere. I will never be deceived because of one goal scored today. And because of that goal they scored today, people are saying that they will win the tournament cup. As for me that is very big dream. Nigeria always end as the trying level and not at the winning side. Ivory Coast being the host of the tournament won their first match and loss their second match and Nigeria drew their first match with 1-1 and Ivory Coast was having 3 points while Nigeria was having 1 point so winning this today game would increase their points. Yet I don't have faith on them because I don't want to have heart attack with Nigeria football team.

Ivory Coast performed better than Nigeria today, Nigeria was simply lucky to get the advantage over them. I find it hard to comprehend the strategy Nigeria was trying to play, they weren't playing professionally, they were just ballooning balls anyhow.
Anyway, congrats to them, and hopefully they'll work even harder in their next game.

it is very difficult to predict which country will win the AFCON,  Because it's becoming more competitive and interesting.
I believe ivory coast still have a better chance of qualifying.  If they can play well win their next game.

My brother you are getting it so wrong, that is not how football is calculated and you should not because of the previous performance of super eagles and count them out of this competition. You said that the one goal Nigeria got against ivory coast should not deceive us to believe in that Nigeria is among the competiting countries. But you have forgotten that ivory coast is the host country and they were able to win their first match, for Nigeria being able to win people that won their first match and also the host of the tournament should be a sign to you that Nigeria is capable of contesting for this tournament.
Another good sign that Nigeria is able to compete in this tournament is that, the country that played with Nigeria in the first leg which ended in draw was able to win another country with four goals margin. This should be a conviction to you that Nigeria is not out for a joke. Meanwhile Nigeria defense is one of the good defense that came to this tournament and every tournament is won by the better side that has the defense.

Nigeria has a greater chance of winning this tournament, despite their poor performance so far. Based on what I have seen, if I had to make a prediction, I would vote for them because I am confident that they are going to change their style of play with this victory that they have today and they can go to great lengths to lift this trophy.
