Bitcoin Statistics

Many have wondered if bitcoin could be the next global currency. While you may have heard the term bitcoin thrown around, it is understandable if you’re still fuzzy on the intricacies of this digital payment system. Before attempting to answer the question posed above, it is important to understand exactly what a bitcoin is.

Bitcoin is a relatively new technology; in fact, it is less than a decade old. Created back in 2007, bitcoin is the world’s first decentralized virtual form of currency. As of fall of 2016, it is now an accepted form of payment in dozens of countries around the globe. As more nations continue to adopt this groundbreaking technology, it increases the chances that bitcoin will, in fact, become the next global form of currency and one of the few not tied to a specific nation’s economy or a banking system.

Experts estimate that in just three years, by the year 2019, there will be five million active bitcoin users. Of this five million, fifty-one percent of users are expected to be outside the United States.

These are impressive statistics; however, consider an even more impressive estimation: bitcoins are expected to be the world’s sixth largest reserve currency by the year 2030.

That said, just as currency and exchange rate fluctuate constantly depending on external factors such as politics, current economic conditions, stock market trading and various transaction trends, bitcoins react in a similar fashion. So far this year (2016) bitcoin achieved a market high of $467.80 and a market low of $358.77.

Mining Blocks

Mining is another aspect of bitcoin operations and transactions that is imperative to understand. To simplify a complicated process, understand that mining is—at its core–a record keeping service. ‘Miners’ ensure a bitcoin chain is consistent, complete, and unable to be tampered with. To accomplish this, miners repeatedly verify and collect new transactions into a new group of existing transactions called a block. It may help to think of it this way: miners enter the transaction data into a powerful computer that essentially processes a seemingly endless string of computations that increase in difficulty over time. So far in 2016, the revenue stream for bitcoin miners has reached an estimated $1,656,621.

But that’s not to say that each bitcoin transaction is huge; in fact, it is quite the opposite. The cost per bitcoin transaction typically hovers around $7.22, while there have been 147 bitcoin blocks mined. Additionally, there have been 3,675 bitcoins mined to date.

The possibility of bitcoin emerging as the new global currency becomes even more important when you consider that China is currently pushing for just that—a new currency. Due to the recent economic downturn in the United States, the dollar understandably faltered. China would like to see a currency not directly tied to the American dollar, its stock markets, and its banks.

The European Union (or simply the EU for short) also comes into play here, as they recently suggested that virtual currencies—like bitcoin—should remain exempt from many traditional taxes, including the infamous value added tax. The value-added tax is an additional amount passed on the value of an article, increasing at each stage of an object’s production or distribution. Similar to good, old, cold, hard cash, this is a major boost to bitcoin’s eventual viability as a global currency.

Let’s also consider for a moment how bitcoin may be able to change the game of the typical banking system. Banking systems, while protected, are unfortunately pretty vulnerable to hacking attempts or malicious phishing. That said, banks are typically how we are forced to complete most current transactions—from the tiniest to the most life-altering purchases: buying shampoo at the drug store to exchanging funds for the purchase of a new home.

A cryptocurrency (which is sometimes called a cryptocurrency) is a form of monetary exchange using cryptography to safely secure virtual transactions and curb the creation of additional units of the currency (it helps to think of this as counterfeit virtual bills). Cryptocurrencies are a subset of digital currencies, and their encryption methods are always getting stronger—meaning transactions and money are better protected for hacking. These programs are starting to stabilize, which only makes bitcoin more of a power player in its journey to a global currency.

The Pros and Cons of Bitcoin

While all of this sounds great, it is important to remember there are good and bad aspects of any major currency contender or any large scale change of process for that matter.

Pros:

1. With a decentralized system of currency, government or banks don’t have any ties to the currency. This can be helpful if a nation is in turmoil or experiences a far-reaching economic downturn (similar to the “Great Recession” in the United States).
2. Transactions are typically tax-free and inexpensive
3. Money is easy to transfer to locations around the world. In fact, it takes virtually no time.
4. Banks cannot use an individual’s saved bitcoins for their own investments. Again, this means that government-related economic depressions will not impact the value of a bitcoin.
5. The blockchain technology is very successful at removing the necessity for intermediaries whose purpose is to bridge the transactional trust gap.

Cons:

1. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are highly volatile. This means the value of a bitcoin can fluctuate drastically—and often there is no way to predict a fluctuation or explain why one may have occurred.
2. Because bitcoins are not tied to a centralized institution, government, or bank their prices may rise and fall dramatically.
3. Users may choose bitcoins to pay for illegal goods and services (illegal substances, firearms, etc.) via the online dark web, as bitcoins can be harder to trace.
4. Bitcoins are currently saved in virtual, online wallets. While it would take the skill and expertise of a talented hacker to access these virtual wallets, it can be done, and hacking has occurred in the past.
5. Many consumers have a hard time understanding bitcoin or its complicated blockchain.

ETH is not ideal because their supply is infinite. BTC is a good candidate, maybe 1 sats = $1 ? Just like satoshi calculated when he set the maximum supply of Bitcoin.

That's true. But we can also see that Ethereum is needed in every platform like coin creation, deploying smart contracts, tx fees, coin developing almost everywhere about Altcoins. Nowadays, Altcoins are also playing a vital role in cryptocurrency. And for this I think Ethereum is also needed to be a global coin and a coin with a price.

Well i think it will never happen. It would be just too difficult for our society to change the way we live right now. I'm talking not only about traditional banking, but banking as itself. Future development of blockchain technology is a key to success, but   in my opinion we will never leave behind "normal" money, coins, bills. The risk of global energy crisis is too high to let the whole world base on technology. But the idea is really interesting, especially if you look at solutions that are trying to create balance between cryptoworld and real world - for example FuturoCoin  (https://futurocoin.com)have 2 restaurants in Poland where you can pay with your cryptocurrency. More and more countries are including cryptocurrencies to their economy - in some places you can pay your taxes with bitcoin.

It could be, bitcoin can easily become a global currency for all people in the world. At least it has a good supply at the moment so there is no need to worry about prominence and moreover it is the most popular coin in the cryptosphere.

I agree with your arguments. Our world is not so quickly able to move from its well-established financial relations and the means of payment used in favor of technologies that have not yet been proven by time. Cryptocurrency is alien to all states without exception and has a high price volatility and the inability to control it. What are the reasons for the state to use it? If this happens, then only on their own centralized cryptocurrencies. At the same time, the usual national currency of the states will always remain and exist in such a case in parallel with the cryptocurrency.

BTC and ETH could become like Dollar and Euro in fiat, why not ;)
This will never happen, because the decentralized cryptocurrency is not secured and has a very high price volatility. Therefore, states in international financial relations will not make extensive use of the decentralized cryptocurrency. Most likely, they will use their own cryptocurrency or stable coins.
Only citizens can use the decentralized cryptocurrency as a global currency.

Yes, your point is valid. But, one can't give up on hope. We can still hope that one day at least it'd be accepted by governments even (as some countries have outright banned the usage of crypto), if not accepting it as a global currency (which does sound far-fetched currently, but might be a possibility in the far future)

It will be difficult for bitcoin to be used as a global currency. Difference in ideologies on how a global currency should work means that not all countries will embrace the idea. Again, bitcoin is very volatile and people usually become unhappy when even physical currencies like the US dollars, Pounds Sterling are not stable though they do change in values narrowly more often than not.

For now, I doubt if it can be a global currency since there are some problems for Bitcoin to adopt globally. A regulation in each country, its characteristics, volatility, and so on. Only by a global agreement to accept it that can make it be a global currency.

Sure it can. But it won't. Bitcoin is pretty much unusable for day-to-day practice, too slow, too complicated. There are many more exciting projects which are getting hard into everyday shoppings like dgb for example. It's amazing for me how btc is going further and further but it won't become a global currency. I think that something else is going to be created in the future, something based on cryptocurrencies, related to it, but not BTC. Cryptocurrencies are just a transition moment in the evolution of modern, financial world. Well, we'll see soon :>

Agree, For now, online dollars like PayPal still dominate global currencies. There are still many shortcomings that Bitcoin has, such as slow transactions, and unstable prices.
But someday there will be better cryptocurrency than bitcoin, with superior features. Bitcoin is just the beginning of crypto digital money, which promises security and decentralization.

Bitcoin is the king among cryptocurrencies and can only be adopted on a large scale among users across the world but for governments to adopt it as official currency (digital) is almost impossible. If countries become more crypto friendly in the future, they'd rather issue their own cryptocurrency than using BTC.

Many people who had no basic education, the aged men and women and the people in the remote areas of the world may not be able to use Bitcoin if it becomes a global money. I think these factors has to be address before Bitcoin could be used as a global money.

Weather we like it or not Bitcoin might have face more difficulties to become global currency as the supporters want it to be. Maybe there will be a time that cryptos will be accepted to many countries as a payment method. This will be a good motivation to push through than Bitcoin to be a global currency. One if the reason is Bitcoin price is simply so volatile and unstable, and obcourse many bank governors and their financial istitution will have more arguments about the said plan. And we have different money that also represent each of every country in the world. Let's just work hard to make our governments to loosen the regulations on crypto to be able to use it on our daily lives.

I think it is more likely that individual countries will create their own digital currencies. One single world currency does not sound realistic to me, maybe I'm wrong but it would be extremely hard if not impossible to reach a consensus (and I don't think the UN has the power to enforce something like this), and it would be too drastic a change for the world's markets.

Even though it's not currently globally acceptable as some countries still considered it a threat.  But it's only a matter of time before it becomes globally acceptable.  This is one of the things that might makes it happen.
1.  When the energy used in fiat transaction becomes unavoidable
2.  High cost of paper money printing
3.  High increase in the exchange of crypto for goods and services.
Let's see if we can get there quickly

Within 5 years you say. Well I don't see that possible within 10 years
It can be accepted I numerous countries but won't be global at any point, our system of government like monetary, they always want to know how you make your wealth so they keep track of it through the bank.

Bitcoin it is already a global currency, it is used by millions of users, but make no mistake, it is one thing to be a global currency and quite another to be a global currency accepted by governments.

Many countries have been testing blockchain for years, which means, among other things, that they want to use Bitcoin technology, but they do not want to use Bitcoin. The governments fear what they cannot control.

We all wish that Bitcoin become or get a good reputation but there are some major issues and because of that Bitcoin can not become global.
The first issue is that there is no control on the usage like crypto especially BTC is highly used in illegal business.
The second major issue is that it is not in the range of the common person, so a huge % is not aware of the crypto world.

For ordinary people, bitcoin has already become a global world currency and can be used in any country and anywhere in the world. However, states and their organizations will definitely not use bitcoin as the world currency. For states, this is unacceptable and, in addition, they will have their own central bank stablecoins, as well as various regional stablecoins of state associations.

Yes for sure bitcoin can actually become a new global currency in the future tho presently now it's has some obstacle which can hinder that from happening. The government wouldn't want to support bitcoin or even trying to adopt bitcoin as s global currency because it has a volatile price and also can't be controlled by no one, most government sees bitcoin as a threat because it can be used for money laundering which is a crime in the society.

It seems that there are still obstacles for bitcoin to be accepted as a global currency, and there are still many problems that occur in some third countries, which have not recognized it as a legal means of payment and do not even recognize bitcoin. impact which will bring its own problems.

it is better for bitcoin to remain independent and only as support for other transactions, let banking continue as usual and US $ as a legal tender and recognized by all countries. let bitcoin complement each other with what is already running.

Bitcoin is a candidate to be the money of the future. As long as there are epidemics like covid, paper money will come to an end. Alternatives are of course crypto currencies and bitcoin, which is more valuable than gold, is the most important one. The biggest problem in Bitcoin is the speed issue and the boredom of high commissions due to the network density.

Can Bitcoin become a new global currency, I'm going to say no...sad at this may seem to say. Government like to control their currency, and they like to know where it is going, what you're doing with it, and so on. People may say "but it's Bitcoin, it cannot be stopped"....the usual response, which I respect, but Bitcoin can be made illegal, if government wanted to BADLY enough, if it really came down to it, then before you know it, you're a criminal and go to jail for not conforming. It will not be a global currency, the only way that happens is to work "with" government, than against, in a dream utopian scenario like a global currency, in my little opinion

Asset as a fund that can be guaranteed and that money is more directed to the capital foundation of a country.
Bitcoin cannot be a global currency because Bitcoin will forever be a digital asset. This is only in my view because the global currency must have a country.

For some reason, many believe that the higher the price of bitcoin, the more it will be recognized throughout the world. I do not think so. Few people think about how the states and their governments will react to the increase in the price of bitcoin in comparison with their currency. We can say directly that they will not be happy about it. After all, people have the opportunity to uncontrollably move any amount of money across the border of states, and this will be unacceptable for them. Most likely, over time, they will even take some kind of restrictions in this.
This is also why it is unlikely that for the states themselves, bitcoin will serve as the world currency that they will use when concluding international treaties.
For citizens, yes, bitcoin is already the world's currency.

Bitcoin is already a global currency that is used all over the world, but so far it is not accepted by most countries. Bitcoin needs to open its banks around the world to gain a foothold in this monetary system.

Bitcoin will eventually be a global currency - and a $1 million price target within the next 10 years is 'very reasonable,' Kraken CEO says. Bitcoin will eventually be the world's currency, Kraken's CEO, Jesse Powell, told Bloomberg
I also agree with the opinion of the Kraken CEO, Bitcoin will indeed become the new global currency. This is because the times are very fast, and technology is very modern. Everything is completely Digital, and Digital Money is also very much needed. And Bitcoin will be the solution to all these problems.

If that happened, then Satoshi Nakamoto's goal had been accomplished.
I also hope Bitcoin becomes a currency, but as the price of Bitcoin increases and the number of uses continues to increase, the transaction or sending costs of Bitcoin will increase, this is because many users are using the Bitcoin blockchain, this is where we will have a little problem when users only send Bitcoin worth 10 to 20 dollars

Bitcoin is getting popular worldwide as a storage asset because the value of bitcoin keeps increasing and now many big influential people also taking interest in bitcoin and invested as well. Most of the traders want to store bitcoin to become financially free in the future. Many countries' governments are not legalizing bitcoin but on the other hand some of the countries allowed to do crypto transactions. Due to the recent bull run, my friends are also talking about cryptos they also want to invest in cryptos that's a good thing. Common man also taking interest in the BTC but for the small transaction, it is costly because of huge transaction fees. Still a long way ahead for the BTC.

The rest of the countries will hopefully support Bitcoin very soon Currently, the number of Bitcoin investors has increased significantly. Bitcoin will soon become a global currency.

In any case, today the investments of large capitals in Bitcoin are gaining more and more large-scale volumes. this in turn enhances the value of Bitcoin and also enhances its popularity as a profitable investment. based on this, we can assume that we have been observing today for at least several years.

too early, I agree with your opinion buddy. because in order to become a world currency, of course it needs to meet many criteria that can be done. Bitcoin is still not and there are still many improvements to be able to get a predicate like that. many countries still do not recognize it as a legal transaction and some only recognize it as trade.

There is still a need for regulations from each country to be able to recognize and accept bitcoin because without clear regulations it is difficult to regulate and supervise bitcoin trading and new problems can arise in that country.

To be a global currency, Bitcoin would have to be accepted by all governments in the world and sadly, that will never happen. Bitcoin is a currency of global use, and that can be used all over the world, which is very different. We must be clear about the difference between these two concepts so as not to be wrong.

It is not impossible that the way Bitcoin's price is rising, it is normal for its transaction fee to increase a little.  Bitcoin to behave in a way that would put all cryptocurrency-related transactions at risk.

Bitcoin is a new global currency, but in the form of a digital currency. We can use Bitcoin anywhere, as long as there is an internet network and the use of Bitcoin is not prohibited. But unfortunately, currently not many use Bitcoin for transaction tools, and most only use it as a trading and investment tool for profit. And after them for then pull it in the form of Fiat, and it looks like Bitcoin and Fiat are inseparable.

As more countries begin to adopt this innovative technology, it’s clear that Bitcoin has the potential to become the new global currency not tied to a specific country or central bank
It depends on what we mean by the term "new world currency". From the point of view of states, they are unlikely to use bitcoin as a means of payment in international transactions. Most likely, digitized national as well as regional currencies will be used for this.
However, for citizens, bitcoin has long become a world currency, since it is used by them anywhere in the world without any restrictions regarding borders.

I think becoming a global currency will take time, but it's not an impossible goal. Acceptance is growing - Australia's largest commercial bank, the Commonwealth Bank, actually recently announced they would allow (https://www.forexbrokerz.com/news/australias-largest-commercial-bank-to-offer-crypto-currency-trading) cryptocurrency trading. Once more institutions like that embrace cryptos, that goal will become more and more real, I think.

Bitcoin does not need to be a currency, but Bitcoin is just a digital asset.

We can think logically if the currency must have an institution or financial institution that regulates so that the price of the currency does not go up and down so quickly like Fiat USD EURO etc.
But we can see that the price of Bitcoin which is now really going up and down is difficult to control which makes us think that Bitcoin is not a currency but a digital asset such as Gold, Oil and Gas which are often traded on Forex.

It seems that it is still difficult to become a global currency because fiat is still leading, especially with government support. In addition, Bitcoin also exists in digital form which not everyone can access because of technological stuttering, while fiat exists in real form which will certainly be easier for many people to reach. And what often becomes an outline is that the fluctuating value of Bitcoin is also a concern that makes BTC difficult to become a global currency.

Unfortunately, as a currency, as a means of payment, bitcoin is now used too little and there is no certainty that this will happen. It is mainly used as a speculative profit-making tool. People invest in it and store it in the hope that it will rise in value and they will get more profit. Therefore, bitcoin is almost never used as a means of payment for the purchase of goods and services. Moreover, states do not want to recognize it as a means of payment. Most likely they will issue and use their digitized currency for this. Bitcoin is the international currency for citizens, not states.

I don't think it will be possible because if it is used to play games it will happen like ethereum which will make transactions very dense and will put a high burden on bitcoin miners because it will be increasingly difficult to get bitcoins and of course the value of bitcoin transaction fees will soaring high.

It is necessary to clarify what we mean by a global world currency. If it's just that people anywhere in the world have the ability to use bitcoin between themselves as a means of payment, then yes, we're already seeing that opportunity. But this possibility is very poorly implemented in practice, because bitcoin is rarely used as a means of payment.
But states are unlikely to use bitcoin in international transactions. To do this, it is more profitable for them to use various CBDCs.

that's true, CBDC is alternate digital currency from government to against crypto dominance at crypto world.
But It will not effect for crypto currency.
Because both is different thing.
Crypto currency didn't use for payment methods yet that will replace fiat money, but It can be.
