Brazil Tops List of Cryptojacking Coinhive Victims, Iranian Cybersecurity Authority Warns

The highest number of recorded incidents of Coinhive cryptojacking software have taken place in Brazil, Iran’s country’s cybersecurity authority revealed in a report Monday, October 8.

According to the Iranian authority’s report on malware in 2017, Brazil, the country with the most reported cases, has been hit over 81,000 times by Coinhive. India came in second with around 29,000, followed by Indonesia with more than 23,000, while Iran scored about 11,000.

Coinhive, the cryptocurrency mining software which mines Monero (XMR), provides an Application Programming Interface (API) to developers, which then lets the developer use a website visitors’ CPU resources to mine the privacy-centered altcoin.

According to a study in May, around 300 websites worldwide contained malicious code which would lead to a device becoming infected with Coinhive without users’ knowledge. More recently, the software has been removed from League of Legends Philippines, and police in Japan investigated a cryptojacking case with Coinhive used as malware.

Relating to Iran specifically, CERTCC found the capital Tehran to be most contaminated with 606 reports, followed by Esfahan with 244.

Research Says Crypto Market on Verge of ‘Implosion,’ Cites Low Transaction Volumes

A recent study from Juniper Research states that the cryptocurrency market could “implode” and that transaction volumes are decreasing, Bloomberg reported Oct. 9.

In a report dubbed “The Future of Cryptocurrency: Bitcoin & Altcoin Trends & Challenges 2018-2023” Juniper assessed the challenges of digital currencies, with a focus on technical, social and regulatory concerns. The survey also analyzed such issues like regulatory developments across the market, exchange failure, hacker attacks, and blockchain forking and their impact on crypto volatility.

Per Juniper, daily transaction volumes with Bitcoin (BTC) have dropped from an average of around 360,000 a day in the end of 2017 to 230,000 in September 2018. Regarding daily transaction values, they saw a downward trend from over $3.7 billion to less than $670 million in the same period.

In the first quarter of the current year, crypto transactions on the market as a whole reportedly amounted to slightly over $1.4 trillion, while in 2017 the figure was less than $1.7 trillion. By the second quarter, transaction values fell by 75 percent, with total market capitalization down under $355 billion. Juniper stated:

CNBC’s Ran Neuner Says ‘Bitcoin Is About to Explode,’ Points to Pending ETF Decision

Crypto analyst and host of CNBC’s show Cryptotrader Ran Neuner has claimed that the price of Bitcoin (BTC) is “about to explode” in a recent tweet October 7.

Neuner expressed his utmost confidence in an upcoming surge in Bitcoin’s price by noting “I just bought Bitcoin for my parents” in the same tweet. A notable rally would likely be tied to the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) highly-anticipated upcoming decision on several Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) applications, the trader claimed in another tweet posted the same day.

Explaining his optimistic prediction, the crypto analyst pointed to the fact that the leading cryptocurrency’s rally last year from “$6,691 (Nov 11) to $20,000 (Dec 17)” was, according to him, “on the back of the expectation and launch of a cash settlement BTC futures contract.”

Following confirmation from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) that the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) were eligible to launch Bitcoin futures, CBOE was the first to launch Bitcoin futures on December 11, while CME launched soon after on December 17 – the day Bitcoin has hit its historic high of $20,000.

Pointing at Bitcoin futures, Neuner made a parallel with the SEC’s much-anticipated decision on the first Bitcoin ETFs to be approved by the regulator. The analyst claimed that a Bitcoin ETF is a “way bigger deal” than a cash settlement Bitcoin futures contract, since it “requires actual purchase of BTC.”

Many point to a Bitcoin ETF helping Bitcoin reach more mainstream investors, since they would not have to directly invest in the underlying asset, in this case the cryptocurrency. If listed on a regulated U.S. exchange, a Bitcoin ETF could potentially push Bitcoin toward broader recognition on Wall Street.

A recent report by security company Banbreach has found that in the past month, the number of routers compromised by cryptojacking software in India has doubled. The report indicates that hackers have cracked over 30,000 routers within the country, Hard Fork reported Oct. 5.

Banbreach managed to track Internet traffic and detect all devices on the Internet with public IP addresses, which made it possible to examine traffic passing through routers.

In the course of its research, Banbreach grouped populated areas of India into three categories from most to least dense. According to the report, 45 percent of the infected routers in India are in the least densely populated areas.

Friday, Oct. 5: cryptocurrencies are seeing little volatility over the past 24 hours to press time, with the majority of losses and gains of top coins capped within a 1 percent range on the day, as data from Coin360 shows.

Bitcoin (BTC) is seeing negligible price change on the day, trading around $6,580 as of press time. Since trading above $6,600 at the start of its weekly chart, the top coin has seen two subsequent price corrections (Sept. 29 and Oct. 3).

Having briefly dipped below the $6,500 threshold during the latter of these, Bitcoin has reclaimed some ground and is back pushing a slightly higher price point.

On its weekly chart, Bitcoin is just over one percent in the red. Monthly losses are also mild at 2.5 percent.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has recently awarded a patent for a blockchain-based secure system to U.S. tech conglomerate IBM, according to a patent filing published on USPTO’s website Tuesday, October 2.

As IMB explains in a document first filed in September 2017, the technology enables the detection of security breaches within a network by connecting all the monitors to a chain configuration, which registers all events in the network. This, in turn, might help to prevent different sorts of hacks.

According to a detailed explanation provided by IBM, a monitor can be easily intruded upon in a regular system as "none of the devices know about each other," and hackers can “clean up” past events to gain control.

However, within a blockchain security system, a hacked monitor can be found immediately, as in such a case synchronised monitors won't have consensus. "If the information received for a specific event or transaction differs, then one monitor may have been compromised," the filing explains.

The use of blockchain technology in monitor systems will therefore help create “a less vulnerable” network and provide more security, IMB states.

The expert thinks that it is imperative to bridge the divide between code and law in blockchain, calling this “a radical rethink” of current regulation.

The company behind a multi-asset, universal wallet that can store major crypto and smart contract tokens in one place says it has become the first mobile wallet to support the ADA cryptocurrency.

Infinito Wallet says the milestone coincides with an update to version 1.15.0 of its platform – enabling users to “securely send, receive and check transaction history of ADA.”

According to the company, this development is significant because very few wallets on the market support ADA, and there is no such app for mobile devices. Infinito developers have worked with the #DevelopmentTeam behind Cardano and IOHK, and they utilized their official Cardano Rust project to seamlessly integrate ADA-support into the Infinito Wallet. With IOHK’s permission and support, Infinito has contributed code to the open-source Cardano Rust project for ADA mobile wallet integration and will continue such support for the Cardano open-source community.

Although there is a desktop wallet exclusive to ADA called Daedalus, Infinito Wallet says people who hold this cryptocurrency deserve a mobile-driven, “ultra-lightweight and portable” alternative, which would maintain the utmost stability and security. Furthermore, on its roadmap, the Universal Wallet plans to support unique features of the Cardano blockchain, including staking Ouroboros.

UK-Based Crypto Platform Launches $1.45 Million Crowdfund Campaign to Bank the Unbanked

Nebeus, the London-based crypto platform, has launched a 1.1 million pound ($1.45 million) crowdfunding campaign as they set out their ambitious goal of bringing financial services to people around the world. According to the World Bank, there are 1.7 billion adults globally who remain unbanked, yet two-thirds of them own a mobile phone that they could use for online banking. The Nebeus’ campaign went live on Sept. 24, 2018 and has already attracted more than 400,000 pounds ($527,490).

Backed by industry expert Brett King, the Nebeus campaign will last until October 23, 2018. Currently operating in 45 countries, they now plan for expansion across Europe, Asia and South America. The company wants to make banking simple for people and encourages a wider use of cryptocurrency in everyday spending, offering user-friendly Bitcoin wallets and its recently launched Exo card. The new prepaid card allows users to seamlessly convert crypto into fiat, making transactions convenient online, offline and even at ATMs.

“We want to create an ecosystem where those who add value are rewarded, and those

who consume services and products can do so in a competitive and secure

environment, built on blockchain technology. Our current campaign will bring us a step
