How does the forum deal with fake news?
« on: February 10, 2024, 03:34:05 PM »
I would like to know because BTT, in defence of freedom of expression, runs a lot of conspiracy theories, especially in the political section. Today I came across this one on this forum:

Do you fear an "Operation Choke Point 2.0" in your country?

In which the OP not only exposes a fake news, he presents it as current news, when it is based on an article from a year ago, and when I explain it, he continues to insist on the same thing.

At first glance, I also read this article as if it contained political elements and should not be on the altcoinstalks forum, just like the banner image at the bottom or middle of every thread in our reply.
But the Moderators of the subforum must check several times because the results will probably be different after being reviewed by all the Moderators.

You can also provide concrete, clear and correct reference evidence if the article contains items that are prohibited on the altcoinstlaks forum.
It seems that the post must also be locked by the Moderator, if it really contains elements that are prohibited on the altcoinstalks forum.
Or you can just report directly to the Moderators: MrSpasybo, alltalk, Jokers, Freemind , because the moderators in this subforum are them.

Well, I think OP knows how to report it, the issue lies more in the discussion of the topic, that OP presents as an example; how certain topics can be "sneaked in" or introduced and allowed to pass.

It is rather an ideological "scam", which inexperienced readers can miss, for different reasons.

And this type of poster always looks for that gray side, which allows them, according to the vision of the forum, not to restrict freedom of expression, even if it is fake news like the case that OP exposes.

I think that this topic of discussion in reference not only to the type of news but to the users is positive to expose them, someone can say he has his right, well, then OP has the right to expose this type of threads and their promoters.

It's either you debunk all his arguments then let other readers to think for themselves or just ignore him. You are also free to give him a -karma on the basis that the OP continues to insist the conspiracy theory even though it's been debunked using factual data.

Personally, I think the post is fine. You had a counter on the Silvergate but the rest seems to be valid points to support his argument that regulators are still choking crypto firms by denying them banking services. If it's something like 1+1 = 3, then a topic like that needs to be trashed.

To be honest, I read Peter90's topic when it came up, and I also found it had a lot of conspiracy elements, but I didn't move it to General Discussion or Legality & Taxation of Cryptos in Further Discussions because of some reasons:

1. The topic content is related to crypto, and it deserves to be in the Cryptocurrency discussions section.
2. Peter90 presents his personal views on this conspiracy theory, and would like to consult everyone's views. At the very least, any conspiracy theory is possible.
3. If the content does not violate the forum's friendliness standards, the topic will still be retained.
4. If other members have accurate information: this will be where we discuss and get real news/information together. Don Pedro Dinero did it very well. This is why I did not lock this topic.
5. Members who do not like this content: can ignore or comment to express their opinion.

Maybe better to report the thread directly mate , because sometimes people keep cheating people and specially this forum , I dunno if karma will even help the issue but I think sending negative karma about this will add flavor to the problem.

misleading is tolerable but scamming and other bad attitude will must be completely reported.

If you think it is only fake news why are you so concerned about them being posted here, and why would forum had to deal with this?
Post your opinion why you dont agree, make your counterarguments or just ignore it and move on with you life.
Most of the news we read everyday has some twisted point of view and we dont know the bigger picture behind it.

we try to avoid politics all together
but keep in mind this is a forum
furthermore, it's a forum with a libertarian foundation , thus freedom of expression is essential.

altcoinstalks is different from BTT in that you cannot post in a Bitcoin forum and say that Bitcoin is bad without convincing reasons, but the forum is here for all altcoins, so the choice of fake news will be based on the user who reads these posts, and everything must be explained clearly and in detail.

Since users cannot delete your posts, you can write in bold that this news is fake.

I accidentally discovered this squalid thread

Someone describes what's going on in the USA: banks keep being pressured by the authorities to avoid doing crypto business and to deny their services to companies involved in crypto business.

This is no cryptoknowledge. This is info available to everybody who is willing to inform himself.
That guy is bringing up example after example of this situation:
Lawsuit From Startup LEJILEX and Crypto Freedom Alliance of Texas
Custodia Bank
SEC lawsuit vs. Coinbase

As soon as he has the time he'll handle the case of Binance and Kraken

As a consequence he's being accused of:

a) spreading fake news,

b) the thread should not be on the altcoinstalks forum

c) the post must be locked by the Moderator

d) it is rather an ideological "scam", which inexperienced readers can miss

e) this type of poster always looks for that gray side ... even if it is fake news like the case that OP exposes

f)  the thread had a lot of conspiracy elements

g) he's misleading and scamming

h) he's engaged in politics

The problem is not the ignorance per se, the problem is when ignorants attack and smear those who are better informed.
The problem is when two characters like the moderator and his boss prefer to defecate on someone’s reputation rather than debating him

so after you two have googled what does it mean to be a decent person, come over and let’s see what you two can do beside smearing people behind their back

Do you fear an "Operation Choke Point 2.0" in your country?

Fake news, information, "investigations", etc.  - are very scary weapons. To begin with, most people consume information without trying to understand whether it is true or false. This primitive but very effective "technology" is used to manipulate the consciousness of the masses. After some time, regular injections of such fakes, the community can form an absolutely necessary worldview and position. And people who think and check the information will be in a critical minority. That means their any voice will be ridiculed, and it will be enough primitive explanation "you want to say that 90% are wrong? Ha ha ha !".
In the last decade, deceiving and degrading people's thinking has become very much in demand, billions of dollars are being invested there all over the world! This "technology" can solve any problem - from electing the right president or "legal" seizure of other people's territories, to refusing vaccines or banning cryptocurrencies....

And one more very complicated problem - no one is responsible for fakes or well-camouflaged fakes, and it is always extremely easy to lie. But it is always more difficult to prove the truth, no matter how paradoxical it may sound.

Negative karma is appropriate in such cases, except for those cases that may be paid campaigns or abnormal activity, such as several accounts suddenly registering by logging in and publishing a specific propaganda. In this case, it must be taken case-by-case and ban accounts if they were in a paid and systematic approach.

I think the first question should be, how really do we detect that a news is fake? Not just news; but generally speaking, that something someone or a user posted is fake?, because first, we have to be able to prove beyond all reasonable doubt that a news or article in regards to anything, published or posted by a user, is fake, before we decide on how to treat such.

And if actually we are able to confirm that whatever someone posted is a fake news, then for now, I we are users start by giving the user a negative karma, and then proceed to reporting the post/user to moderators for proper disciplinary action, after the moderators themselves can confirm of a true, that what that user posted is fake.

In conclusion, it is absolutely OK to allow free speech, most especially on public forums like this, but then, fake news, propagandas, promoting irrelevant stuffs, or damaging other people's reputation for no just course, shouldnt be entertained, for the overall, well being of the community.
