It really depends on the altcoins you are aiming at...
Altcoins can be a risky investment if they do not belong to the top ... and even so, it has it's own risks
Usually the risk vs reward is relatively good on the top alts, nevertheless there are always a few rising gems to look for as these will give you a bit higher risk, but a hugely larger potential reward.
As an example, lately I've found Veil project and my jaw dropped... these guys maybe one of the most undervalued coins out there... they have all the positive signs (no ICO, no premine, well known team, corporate structure), they are a privacy coin which by itself brings a huge market potential and they have a working product that is beyond their direct competitors as it solves the holes in Zcash and Monero... on top of this, they are new, but already featured in multiple exchanges...
