All good advices out there but it all still about your product, however it also depends on your niche, some simply do not allow e-mail marketing for example. So you need to build your own autoresponder script for making all this things work for you.

I have always gas a thing or two against this form of marketing as I'm quick to see most as spams but I think your write up will change my perception a little

You really need to be carefull here to be compliant with all e-mail marketing laws out there. And try to switch between e-mail marketing providers anyway for everything you may have had here really. I do know about MailChimp, Getrepsonce and Aweber.
