On January 2, The Ethereum network will host a hard fork designed to delay the activation of the bomb.

The Ethereum Foundation website has published details of another hard fork designed to delay the activation of the so-called complexity bomb.

The update was named Muir Glacier and will be activated on block #9200000, which is expected to be mined on January 2, 2020 depending on the speed of the blocks ' release.

In his message the lead developer of the Ethereum Foundation Hudson Jameson appealed to the holders of the node with a request to update their SOFTWARE by December 30 2019

The complexity bomb is a complementary Proof-of-Work algorithm mechanism for regulating the complexity of Ethereum mining, exponentially increasing its value every 100,000 blocks. By increasing the time blocks are found, the complexity bomb is also designed to encourage members of the Ethereum ecosystem to switch to the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) algorithm.

Earlier, Ethereum developers discussed the possibility of completely removing this mechanism, but eventually agreed to its postponement, for which the Muir Glacier hard fork will be held. After its implementation, the activation of the complexity bomb will be delayed by 4 million blocks.

According to Etherscan, the current difficulty value is 17.15 seconds. This, although less than almost twice the figures of September 2017, however, still leads to too long processing time of transactions.

We will remind, on December 8 in the Ethereum network hardfork Istanbul took place. Its goal was to ensure the compatibility of Ethereum with the zcash cryptocurrency, increase the scalability of solutions based on the zero-disclosure proof technology (SNARKs and STARKs), change the gas cost of various operating codes (opcodes) in order to make it difficult to spam blocks and increase the network's resistance to DoS attacks.

As far as I know, and as I understand from this text, with a hard fork on January 2, a new coin will not appear. It will be an improvement similar to Istanbul. Buterin previously stated that with hard ethereum forks, new coins will not appear.
We are already waiting for the Ethereum network to transition to Ethereum 2.0. I would like to see how after that the functionality of this coin changes.
