This Hold or Hodl is just the same meaning in my opinion but many crypto enthusiast always differentiates them to have defferent meanings.
Now, according to investopedia or the dictionary, it is defines as, "HODL is a term derived from a misspelling of "hold" that refers to buy-and-hold strategies in the context of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
While investing or investment according to the dictionary is defines as, "An investment is an asset or item accrued with the goal of generating income or recognition. In an economic outlook, an investment is the purchase of goods that are not consumed today but are used in the future to generate wealth. In finance, an investment is a financial asset bought with the idea that the asset will provide income further or will later be sold at a higher cost price for a profit."
What are your thoughts. Thanks

+1 for great ideas
We have argued about this: is HOLD a form of investment? Or is it simply speculation?
For me, investing is spending assets out and getting a bigger amount of assets.
The speculation is to buy a large amount of products that make the market unbalanced, then sell to make a profit.
Hold: simply store the product to wait for a higher price.
I think the investment consists of 3 components:
- Short cycle transactions: money => product => more money;
- Speculative;
- Hold.
Thus, my opinion: hold is also a form of investment.
-
To me, it does not really matter how we can be defining or differentiating things or terms. The most important thing is that a person can derive an income or an ROI out of something he is holding or investing with.

I only added.
but only for ONE Transaction. If you make a transaction many times it is called Trading. There are still many people who equate Trading with Investment.

I got it and thank you for explaining the true meaning. I once read an article about the terms hold and hodl which always makes me ask questions. You explained and I understand now

I guess the word hold is for short term investment like for couple months while the word hodl stands for 'hold on dearest life' which means is a long term investment in crypto-world.

Yes, mate It was often used as a cryptocurrency slang HODL mean 'hold on dearest life' just like many slang that was used in the crypto industry such as FOMO which means "fear of missing out" the crypto industry has a lot of difficult meanings including styles like those algorithms that was used in each Blockchain.

Nice and very much effective information about hold and hodl. Till today i consider both word as same meaning but a simple difference. Just all of us use hold and hodl same case and uses.

I think you have shared a good thing. You think you know about algorithm. More information will be required to know the details of hold subject. But I think many will understand after reading your post. Thank you for providing such information. You explain in more detail.

Haha, I think trading is just a repetition of buying & selling activities: money => assets => money => assets => money ...
I think this example will make things clearer: Bobs invests $ 10,000 in 3 categories:
- trading: $2500;
- speculation: $5000;
- hold: $2500.

That is the same meaning for me HODL is a jargon in crypto. Basically its still HOLD. They have different spelling but they have the same meaning at least for me that is my understanding. HODL is to HOLD.
-
it is important to note that investment has different aspect. Holding, staking, lending and several other means. Holding might be a major part but you need to know what token you are holding and what fraction of the token are you holding. some projects are short term while some are long term.
-
IMHO, Hodl or Hold has the same meaning. It is the term when an investor tries to keep their asset on wallet rather than selling at the current price. The common reason is about the price at a lower rate or in a bearish phase. I don't see a different thing between them, even the history that we have the word "hodl" is indeed from the misspelling of "hold". So, why we think that they are different? We actually do the same way on both terms.

I agree with you, they are the same. I use the word "hodl" and "hold" for the same purpose, as I know it from bitcointalk forum having the same meaning. I never saw that people were debating the differences, they know that the meaning are the same.
-
They are the same, there is no difference between them. The meaning is to keep our token or coin when the price is still low. Then we will wait for the best time to sell the coins or tokens. We expect that will be next big rising up. We only sell when the price meets our hope.
-
It makes no difference to these two words and it is even familiar in crytpocurrency lovers.
If we wish if we can see HodL - Hold is like BTC and Bitcoin and same ETH with Ethereum .
BTC and Bitcoin are the same and that is the abbreviation of and HodL being a Hold, it is one of the words that ends meaningfully.
-
Clear enough that HODL is a term derived from misspelling of HOLD that refers to buy and hold.
For me no difference between hold and hodl but different from hold and investment.
Hold could be good for hold now and trade later or for long term depends on market movement.
Investment is for long tern holding treated as important asset.
-
According to my understanding HODL is used when someone means to hold a coin for seriously longterm, some have also created its meaning as Hold on for Dear Life which also suggests a lifelong hold but these crypto terms are just to motivate community i guess.
