Title: Beirut explosion - Lesson to learn from this
Post by: Vietchong on August 07, 2020, 10:48:59 AM
People can quickly become complacent to think that their single location storage of their Bitcoin hoard would be enough. We all saw how 300 000 people have lost their houses in as little as a few seconds.

The Beirut explosion should be a wake-up call to all of us, to store your Paper wallets and cold wallets in more than one geographical location. A national disaster or a accident like this might wipe out your house and if you used that as your primary hiding place, you would lose more than your house.

After a disaster like this, bulldozers are brought in and only the foundations might be left after they are done. (So hiding it in a safe or a wall or the roof is a bad idea.)

Make sure you have several copies of your Paper wallets/Private keys and store them in separate locations. You might not even be at home when a disaster like this happens and when you return, the authorities might stop you from entering the devastated area. (due to instability of structures or chemical/gas leaks.) So you will not have a opportunity to retrieve your stash.

Wake up and act now... before it is too late.  :)

The explosion of a fertilizer plant in the West was only a fraction of that in the port of Beirut, which officials say killed at least 135 people and injured 5,000. Both the West and Beirut cases involved large quantities of ammonium nitrate, a chemical commonly used in industry but highly explosive, and has led to allegations of blame and poor management.

Chemistry is very dangerous, it not only destroys people's current lives, but it also has serious consequences for our future. Typical of this atrocity are the victims of Agent Orange. It has been decades, but the poison is still not lost, it is even passed down from generation to generation.

With the development of science and technology, such man-made disasters will occur more often. This is the payment of people for the convenience and comfort they create. Nowadays, safety checks of the storage of saltpeter and similar explosive chemicals are underway around the world. Humanity makes everything stronger that does not kill.

This is a real wake up call. It should be extremely important to do a good risk assessment to know the damage and consequence of things going bad. Share your crypto assets in different wallet and also put extra security to your wallets

As said as this event showed us that anything bad may occur anytime, but in my opinion, the safest place stays always in the cloud man.
anything that is physical can be damaged, with explosion or without it.
The cloud is so far the safest place you can store your ENCRYPTED data in it.

Im surpise of this thread as I thought the focus is about the explosion. But instead, the focus is on how to avoid losing everything.
Anyway other things to keep your asset safe and near indestructible are to memorize your private keys or seed phrase or use something familiar yet very unique phrases or passwords and decrypt them using brainwallet.

The element of national interests is extremely important, always goes with and goes with the legitimate interests of that country. If the countries do not respect and are equal to each other, the international situation cannot be stable.

Humans need to quickly find solutions to resolve conflicts, minimize wars happening or in danger of happening in the world.

Conflicts of interest are still the cause of tensions and clashes, hegemony and big-country thinking, ignoring the interests of other countries, still exist, armed conflict is still a daily story, bombs bullets still fall and blood still spills in many war zones, even the world is sometimes in a state "on the brink of war."

Yes, I get your point. We should not rely on storing our keys to our wallets on our homes because anything can happen. I read some horror stories of people who could not anymore go back to their homes for some reasons so they lost access to their digital assets. Storing them somewhere safer can be a good idea.
