I think the only reason we can say cryptocurrency is better than gold is because it has given us the opportunity to make profit leading to financially free specially to the common people. And there's no other big reason behind it.

Fully agreeing with Nathaniel Popper, perhaps one of Bitcoin's drawbacks is its indirect association with ransomeware, money laundering & terrorism financing. Besides, Bitcoin also threatens the right of governments to manipulate the economy. And governments really don't like this :)

The advantage of cryptocurrency investment than gold is the opportunity to earn bigger profit from what expected. Cryptocurrency is not stable investment it is possible to surge any time. Gold investment is stable it won't pump or dump. No chance to earn bigger profit. Decentralized world is the strength of cryptocurrency at the same time the weakness. I support what Nathaniel said about cryptocurrency to be better than gold which is also proven by the crypto market strength during the economic meltdown caused by the pandemic but not every crypto have the more scarce potential and the last time i check only crypto with the block halving and small total supply have such attributes.

However, my opinion is a little more relaxed. I believe that all cryptocurrencies really have value and are worth being considered better than gold or silver. As Vitalik Buterin noted, 21M BTC is too little to serve the entire economy, and the poor have no chance of owning BTC. Altcoins was born to solve this problem, then the problem of energy saving, decentralization, scalability... It is clear that Satoshi Nakamoto created BTC to revolutionize, and the revolution not only needed a king, it needed a mighty army. And I believe that every elite soldier in that army is more valuable than gold :)

We cannot compare between Cryptocurrency and Gold because they have different markets and functions,
although both have the function of storing value and as an investment tool but both are very different in their use, if cryptocurrency is used as an alternative to online payments, while gold is only for storing assets (at least for now, because its real function is as an alternative to past transactions, it's just now being replaced FIAT).
