Why do altcoins compare themselves to bitcoin?

That's normal as part of the promotion of their project, promoting the advantages over to bitcoin in order to attract investors and gain popularity.

That is because altcoins means alternate coin to bitcoin, which is the first cryptocurrency coin and the most popular as of moment.
