I keep hearing about the Metaverse business from NFT circles. It doesn't make much sense to me, but neither did NFTs to begin with either.

I assume it'll progress well if there's enough interest in it at the moment, which I have noticed reflected onto some projects like MANA that are developing this if not mistaken.

There is a big possibility for that to happen. Metaverse is now the emerging technology and can be one of the biggest trend to be affecting things online...and since Facebook throw its weight on this matter there are now many other entities of doing the same thing...They must be sensing and smelling good amount of money that can be made here. There is a big possibility that DeFi, NFT can be combining forces with Metaverse soon.
