It really depends on what altcoins you're going to invest in. I recommend paper wallets if you are going to hold the coins for a long time but if you want to use your coins then your best choice would be a desktop wallet. Preferably on a computer that you don't use for other purposes, to make sure that your wallet doesn't get compromised by hackers. Web-wallets like others mentioned are fine if you want all-time access to your coins but keep in mind that you give the responsibility of your coins to someone you don't know.
