Purchase a high-quality dual-flush toilet, preferably one with a 4-star water-efficiency rating. Four-star versions can save up to 35,000 litres per year for the average home, using only 4.5 litres for a full flush and 3 litres for a half-flush.
Older toilets use approximately 18 litres of water per flush. If you can't afford a new toilet, you can limit the amount of water used with each flush by placing a water-filled plastic bottle in the cistern. Bricks should not be used since they can crumble and cause the system to fail.
Consider adding plumbing that will flush your toilets using rainwater or greywater if you are building a new house or updating your bathroom.
Don't use your toilet as a trash can. Female hygiene items, food garbage, baby wipes, and goldfish should all be discarded. Flushing them down the toilet not only wastes valuable water but also strains the sewer system.
