Title: Keeping your seed phrase safe
Post by: Thyplaymaker on December 09, 2023, 02:38:21 PM
There are many ways you can keep your seed phrase safe.
At first don't store your seed phrase on any device that's is connected to the Internet. Like laptop or smartphone(to be safe from hackers) . Instead use a cold storage device, such as a hard ware wallet. You can also use password-

protected documents or physical copy to store in a safe place. But the issue of physical copy is that it might not be safe from physical attack like water or fire. Or you can easily misplaced it.

So just make sure you backup your seed phrase in a safe  location you can easily access.
Is really good to keep your seed phrase safe. Most people have lose alot of cash due to careless keeping of seed phrase. From hackers and mostly they forget the location they store their seed phrase.

And please don't share your seed phrase with anyone no matter any circumstances there's a reason why the seed phrase is private and for personal use.

Exactly, I completely agree. Some of the necessary information, such as codes, should be on a clearly visible application on the phone and should not be forwarded to anyone for any reason, be it to tell you that you will get a computer for mining.

There will always be risks wherever we store seed phrases. But it will depend on how we handle it. Because sometimes, some of these things have their own pluses and minuses.

For example, if we save a seedphrase online, the risk is clearly very high, especially when it comes to hackers, well, this is no doubt risky. So we definitely understand, at least don't store it online, it's very easy to get hacked. Moreover, if we often leave digital traces related to emails or other data, this will be even more risky.

Oh yes, if you store data offline, of course there will be a risk of it being lost, stolen, damaged, or affected by any disaster. But, that's out of our control, right? If I really prefer to save it offline, but not just 1. So there are indeed some backups. Well, if for example there is 1 missing, we still have other access.

not sharing the seen phrase is what the wallet will say to you even when you were creating the wallet. its the ultimate advice to obey i think. but keeping the seed can be tricky at some point especially when you have already experienced losing a phone.

so you don't wanna store your seed on the phone but also you want to have easy access to these seed and keys so that you can import them easy as well when needed. and the only option for me to be able to do this is to just keep them on the txt file inside a folder in my phone drive.  i'm sure its not safe but  if you follow what i'm doing, do so at your own risk.  ;D

there are suggestions like storing your keys and pass shares  in an airgapped devices. might as well do that if thats how you wanna secure your funds.

Sharing seed phrases for wallets is considered to be a big insanity not unless of course your wallet has nothing valuable on it and you are just joking. Now, we must make sure we are hiding seed phrases well and is beyond the reach of anybody even from the reach of your wife not unless you both have an agreement to co-own a wallet. In my case, I am manually encoding my seed phrases in a special notebook which only me has an access to...but this is something I am not worried since there are only two people in the house I am living in and usually visitors don't enter my enclosed space. I am actually looking forward for the development of a special technology for cryptocurrency where we don't have to be hiding anything...and what that can be is something I am thinking about.

See this....

Everything you say on this topic is correct, and if I may recommend one of the cheapest ways to protect our seed phrase using physical objects, then the video above can be your reference too.

Printing writing on a steel plate and then joining it in one place so that it stays together is an efficient way to ensure that the seed phrase is completely protected from heat, liquid corrosion, rust and so on. It only takes one tool which is quite expensive to carve it, but if you buy it together with your friends, you can get it at a cheaper cost.

Convenience often does not come with security. Companies like Ledger and Trezor have not yet found the most effective way, so self-recording and storing private keys is still being used. Users will be safe from cyber attacks and will not worry about their private keys being stolen by hackers.

Personally, I think a new laptop and Ubuntu operating system are secure enough to manage and protect private keys, while not being too inconvenient to access accounts when needed. I have been using Ubuntu for many years and have never encountered any viruses. Everything is done with a very high level of security. This way, I can access my crypto accounts when I need to without having to manually enter my private key each time.

If we are eager on making an investment then we should also consider the way we are going to make our seed phrase a secured one, this start by us finding an alternative means of keeping this seeds in a more secure and private means that we are the only one to have access to them, when we have derived a means of achieving the best privacy we want, we are going land at getting the seeds safe.

The crypto space is all about security and most especially when you relate it to your wallet, the only way I feel any crypto enthusiast should be losing with his or her seed phrase is when that particular user lacks the knowledge on the important of keeping his or her seed phrase safe. For me I always relate the seed phrase to the actual keys to the account but the reason why the seed phrase is so much delicate is that if the seed phrase is lost the possibility of you getting access to your slim is almost impossible.

You are your bank so it is important that you know how to secure your seed phrase and not only your seed phrase but your machine and yourself also, you have to be good at securing your machine and learn how to protect it and you must know how to control yourself in telling people about your investment in Cryptocurrency because they might target.

You do not have a third party to rely on, this is not a bank where you have to ask for support when you encounter issues, just like they do in the banking system.

Cryptocurrency is cool, bitcoin is cool but people run away from using bitcoin the right way because of fear of losing their bitcoin. Instead they resorted to using the centralized system.
Every crypto enthusiast needs to be careful this time because it will be painful to save all through the bear market and when it is time to reap in the bull market you get hacked. If anyone is to be his own bank, they should be cautious of security.

It doesn't matter how much increase their holding, if he cannot keep his seed phrase safe then his holding is worthless. The investor must ensure the security of his seed phrase before investing. Some users store their seed on any online platform for its easy access which carries fatal risk. Those seeds can be lost at any time. It is easy for hackers to steal seeds from online platforms if a user does not store them properly. Moreover, keeping the seed in a physical place does not provide 100% security. No smart phone or internet platform is safe. For seed frames I personally prefer airgapped devices which can give me maximum assurance.

Instead use a cold storage device, such as a hard ware wallet. You can also use password-

Hardware wallets doesn't necessarily mean a cold storage but HW are designed in a way that can't be affected even when they are connected to an infected device but Ledger itself stealing user's seeds via their app show we can't trust any manufacturer completely.

Create wallet on a new device, remove all the hardware that let us to connect the device to internet and sign in TX from offline then broadcast from another device which is connected to internet and this is the only way that we can ensure 100% safety of our wallet.

Storing seed phrase safer is different and it has to be taken care on offline environment too.

Keeping seed phrase safety is most important how to protect our cryptocurrency assets and private place as flash disk for saving it or note by writing on note book. I have bad memorize when giving loan of my flash disk but have personal wallet there and indirectly all my assets gone.
Use hard ware wallet could be good option but keep educate and teach your family understand well how to use it when some thing happen to you, but if get difficult when holding bitcoin or altcoin assets in hardware wallet better use trusted exchange with local currency exchange or global to make your family easily to access.

and you are completely correct about safekeeping  our seeds because that will determine the future of our holdings.

Yes, you are right, one of the mistakes I see the most is because they link their wallets to sites that are not clear, from there there are lots of cases of someone losing their money because hackers managed to hack them.

If we are airdrop hunters, then we should use a special wallet for that activity. We can create many wallets, the first is our main wallet which must be kept secure and the other is a wallet to hunt for airdrops and other things like that.

~snip~

Hardware wallets (most) are not devices that do not connect to the internet, because from time to time you have to do a firmware update and coins app update, but there are also hardware wallets that are completely airgapped and use QR codes or SD cards to communicate with "online wallets".

There is always a risk that someone can hack such a device (remotely or if they gain physical access), so we cannot be absolutely sure that our coins are safe. What people should use more is adding the so-called 13 or 25 word (passphrase), which is then stored separately from the seed and gives us additional security even if someone finds our backup or forces us to hand it over to them.

It is crucial to always be one step ahead of those who want to harm us, but also to think outside the box and be original when it comes to storage and keeping backups.

Thanks for this reassurance. I remember when I was a newbie in the other forum. I asked a question about how scammers target their potential victims. I asked that if I have my device and wallet installed in it, and
I don't go about clicking random links;
I don't go about connecting my wallet to websites;
I don't expose my seed phrase;
How easy or possibly is it that I will be hacked.
I think hackers are not spirits, the person they will eventually hack must have given them some clue on how to succeed. If we are careful, hacking will be made much more difficult to hackers.

With the steps you have given, this is indeed the right thing so as not to cause the wallet we have to be accessed by other people. Now there are lots of airdrop programs that force us to connect the wallet to a site even though they don't provide a phrase at the beginning, but there is a script that can be used. to bypass all of that, so you have to be careful when you want to connect your wallet to a site on the internet.

I usually tell every new and un-exprirence Bitcoiner that security and privacy is one very paramount aspect of successful Bitcoin investment. It is possible for an individual to be a very stronger holder of Bitcoin, who finally gets to lose all his asset one day due to their carelessness or a very slim mistake. While investing into Bitcoin, an individual is supposed to he very much concern about the security measures to take in other not to lose their asset to thieves, scammers or hackers. @OP, you have talked about the import ways to securely keep one's seed phrase from hackers.

That's really important; it's like a key that, if it's lost, your wallet account can't be opened first, and its contents will be locked there forever if we lose it or forget where we put it or kept it. That's why it's important to keep it on a backup flash drive—not just one but more than one; write it on a piece of paper with a pentel pen so it doesn't get erased; and don't read it.

As long as you can put it where you can, let's do it, and don't just save it on the desktop permanently because hackers can get it. Even if it's saved on the desktop but it's temporary, it should be transferred immediately to another USB flash drive, just like that.

Tradition method as you write them on a piece of paper or engrave it with a steel or metal or stainless are the best ways. But doing some back ups is a brighter idea as long as they're not scattered that can be seen by someone. Your house is a safe place for your own assets but you'll never know that the people that you're allowing to enter have bad intentions and knows that it takes them just to take your seed phrase and they'll be able to gain access to your funds.

What the OP said is true. I personally avoid saving seed phrases in digital form. I prefer to write it on paper and store the paper in a safe and waterproof place. And I also copied the paper and saved it in two different places. And the most important thing is that no one else knows about our crypto holdings. Except for those we can trust, like a husband and wife who can trust each other. Or to our children who could be our heirs in the future.

Actually, there are many methods that can be done, in addition to storing on a piece of paper or a piece of anti-rust aluminum plate.
But it still has risks, especially with a lot of reserves.

I keep my passphrase in a place that I think is safe and that my wife knows because I don't want only me to know.
When I can't open it, there are still people nearby who can access.

My initial phrase is staying safe with a wide variety of backups and security.
And I also provide it in digital form that is not connected to the internet at all.

I agree what is said in original post. It is good to keep important information safe like words you need for your cryptocurrency wallet. It is better to focus on keeping it safe place other than make it easy to access. If you will keep this info on computer it can be easily stolen by hackers. But if you write it down on paper and keep it in safe place which you only know it is safer method. It is also good idea by the way to make two or more copies and keep them in different saf places in case one gets lost or forget about one place so you will be able to get it from other place. And ut is good to only share this info with trusted people to keep your money safe. By following these steps you can help yourself to keep your cryptocurrency investments safe in long term. So always be careful while storing your seed phrase.

People keep repeating methods how to store seep phrase as commandments, invent new hardware wallets, improve security measures all the time, come up with new methods to encrypt seed phrase, but still manage to lose money. Not matter how many times everything is repeated, how save and secure they are, they lose funds not because someone hacks them, but because they themselves do stupid mistakes.

I dont know how many more topics, posts, video and articles must be created, that will stop people from giving their crypto to criminals by themselves. Sometimes I think that the best secure and safest way to keep seed phrase is to leave it on most visible place.

Cold storage devices, or hardware wallets as it's often referred to, are used to store crypto coins, and not seed phrases or private keys, or maybe I am wrong, then I am ready to take corrections from another user that know better.

But over all, I agree with you @op, but then, I still believe that the safest way to store seed phrases is simply do write them down and keep somewhere safe, yeah, it might be in danger of water or fire destruction, but I believe this is why we are often adviced to make or create different copies of the same seed phrase and keep them in different places, so if paradventure, water or fire destroys one or two of the seed, we can fall back to the other backups.

Overall, seed phrases, private keys, are the number one things to give 100 percent attention to, for without them, we own no crypto, and if we hustle, gather alot of crypto for our future use, and someone, we let a possible scammer into our wallet seed phrase or private key, it simply means that all we have suffered to get, we might have suffered to get it for someone else.
So, yeah, it's of atmost important that we must keep safe, and protect our seed phrases, or private keys at all cost, employing different safety measures that are safe, to ensure that what is ours today, does not become someone else's tomorrow.

Btw, +1 for bringing up this topic.

If you want to join airdrop, make sure you are not using your main wallet, the wallet that contains your big assets. Instead, you should make a new wallet for airdrop so that incase you are connected to a phishing site, only the wallet you use for airdrop is at risk. This is what the airdrop hunters do, and I think it's still helpful to those who are new to airdrop who are not aware of this stuff. In case, you are new and use a main wallet for airdrop then you accidentally connect to platform that turns to scam then you have to immediately disconnect your account to avoid losing your future rewards from airdrop.

There is this unpopular opinion I will like to share too. Never discard your seed phrase even after using selling or sending out the coins on the wallet because I have been a victim one time. The mistake I did was that I didn't save my private key to a wallet after selling the coin I have inside and then later someone who thought I still used the wallet sent me funds to that wallet and I didn't have access to that coin to date just because I didn't back it up after using the coin in the wallet address. I hope that one day I might be able to miraculously see it but I know that the funds in that wallet is as good as gone.

New crypto users are usually not that careful about using wallets, so they end up using their main account on all websites. And hackers take advantage of this, creating various fake airdrop websites and enticing new crypto users to participate in the airdrop with various tempting offers, so that the hackers can gain access to the wallet. A crypto user must first be aware of how to keep his/her wallet safe, otherwise that crypto user has to end his/her crypto journey by becoming a victim of hackers in a very bad way.

The main problem for every new user is always looking for safety by using one wallet and that is the main wallet.
When he participate in any program, that wallet will be sent, so it is very possible that at some point there will be a new program that is actually misleading, so the wallet provided will easily be hacked. But actually, it would be a very good lesson for him to remember that don't carelessly give or place your main wallet in any program that you don't trust, especially for airdrops which are often misused.

Just sending an address for the purpose of participating in a campaign or airdrop is not a big problem, because from the address alone it is not easy for hackers to track the private key or seed phrase... but what becomes a big problem is when the main wallet is connected to a third party application which will actually making the security of the private key or seed phrase very vulnerable...

I can't recommend using a main wallet (with a large balance) to participate in campaigns or daily needs... as long as creating a wallet is easy and free, it's a good idea to create more than one for security and privacy purposes.

To avoid unwanted things, it's better to use another wallet to participate in airdrops, testnets and the like. To avoid something we don't want. It's certainly better. Avoidance is the best way, rather than regret later because of the lack of understanding experienced by the beginner.
There are many ways that can be misleading and there is no harm in not revealing the main wallet. At least there is an additional wallet that beginners can prepare for the event they want to take part in, because there can always be mistakes made by beginners themselves.
Even though it is true that it is not easy to hack a wallet because of good security, it is important to avoid mistakes made by beginners because fraudsters are clever enough to trick them in many ways.

Another good way of storing seed words safe and offline is by encrypting them, and it's very easy to do that with open source products like Seedkeeper.
Seedkeepr cards are made by Satochip, they have open source code, and they are good way to store multiple seed phrases in card format.
You can even make your own DIY card with custom design at your home and just flash the code.

If we want to keep the private information of our wallet safe online then we need to ensure a safe place where hackers can not access our wallet by keeping the private information of our wallet. Apart from keeping the personal information of your wallet online, we have to keep that information in a safe place by noting it in our offline account. It should be kept in a place so that no one but me knows about my wallet personal information. If we are careful to protect the personal information of our wallet then surely our wallet will be safe.

Yes, for me would love to do a DIY backup for my seeds phrases.

Currently though my setup is having it in a safe deposit box at home. I bought some at cheap price from a friend of mind of sold it in the secondary market. So sometimes I will be there if there will be new arrivals and then I will chose my boxes I want and I have him and his workers repaint everything for me and do the reset, it's old school boxes not like the new model which is digital.

But now I looking as how to DIY as other options for me.

I have lost my seed phrases for a couple of times. Consequently, I have also lost my assets. People use different ways to keep seed phrases safe. If you keep it in your computer then if your computer breaks down, you are in trouble. There is also possibility that your computer may get hacked. Other ways such as keeping it in hardware wallet or writing it down on a page do have some advantages and disàdvantages.

Exactly, when we lose the seed phrase, we will lose our assets. That's why we need to be very careful to save the seed phrase. And it is recommended to keep the data of seed phrase in some places. So, when we lose the data in one place, we still have another data in another place. Sure, the computer can be hacked, too. We don't keep it carelessly.

Exactly, I completely agree. Some of the necessary information, such as codes, should be on a clearly visible application on the phone and should not be forwarded to anyone for any reason, be it to tell you that you will get a computer for mining.
Yeah as clipboards or could be the whole phone or device might be infected with a backdoor or malwares that might send important private keys and seed phrases to the hacker. Well yeah this is quite common type of attacks which is alarming to most of us and yeah storing our PK's and SP's offline would be the most effective way for our funds to be safe.

Hardware wallets are built in a way that you can only verify the see phrase but you can not see the seed phrase after you finish setting up the wallet. Although, maybe not all hardware wallets works this way. But you can not keep your seed phrase or keys in hardware wallet. It is better you write it down on a part or later laminate the paper or get a steel or titanium sheet for it. If you think the offline storage is not enough, you can extend it with passphrase. But some people use to make a mistake and not know that if they lost the passphrase, it is like they lost the seed phrase as they will not be able to have access to their coins.

I don't think keeping them in cheap safe deposit is a good idea.
This will be the first thing anyone would check for valuable items, and if it's small they would just carry it and open in other location.
Some people are even making a mistake of keeping hardware wallets together with seed phrase backup, and that should never be done.
I had a few ideas for creating easy DIY backup solution, but I am not finding time to create good post with tutorial.

And please don't share your seed phrase with anyone no matter any circumstances there's a reason why the seed phrase is private and for personal use.
For reasons like love and trust for next-of-kin, many people may consider sharing their seed phrase with their loved ones so that they can have access to their wallets if there is an accident that takes their life. It is risky because love can turn sour and then trust can easily be lost, especially because humans are generally unpredictable. Trust no one with your seed phrase except the individual, who is a legal practitioner bound by law not to divulge private sensitive information given to them.

You can even make your own DIY card with custom design at your home and just flash the code.
https://satochip.io/product/seedkeeper/
Very good advice, I have practiced it, I have encrypted my main wallet recovery phrase and placed it at different locations in my house. Although they are vulnerable to any natural disasters and can be burnt easily. Many members will suggest using steal-made cards or material on which we can inscribe our seed phrases but its not an easy task as if you don't have the right tool or skill you have to hire and then that person could know the phrases.

I never heard about Seedkeepr before, its totally new to me, well after seeing the website it looks fascinating, did you use it? I mean if you have a personal review about it. Although if its open source is it verified by developers? The product seems good but I doubt will be shipped worldwide. If yes then that's a great thing. I will look into this product let's see if it convinces me.

Of course, it is very important to keep the wallet seed phrase safe at all times if you want to work in cryptocurrency. There are many investors and many users who have lost their money or had their money hacked due to not keeping their wallet seed phrase safe. I keep my wallet seed phrase in a very safe place from where I think no one can steal my wallet seed phrase. First I write down my wallet seed phrase in a notebook and keep that notebook in a place where no one but me and my wife can access it. Sometimes we hear from many people who lose money from their wallets they can't even say how they lost it but I guess most of the times it's because they don't keep the seed phrase of their wallets safe. So my advice to everyone is to first of all keep the wallet seed phrase secure so that no one can hack it somehow.

It's also sad to hear that a colleague got into trouble because he didn't remember the phrase he had, and he couldn't recover his wallet, so what was in his wallet ended up drifting to nowhere. Of course, this is a very painful experience for you and makes you more careful in storing phrases more safely.
In fact, writing on paper, which we often use as a tool for whatever work is there, is something that really guarantees not to be lost because it is together with the routine work that we often do and does not stand alone, so that it is forgotten.
