Title: Did anyone else know about this feature?
Post by: Hatchy on January 15, 2024, 08:17:29 PM
I discovered an amazing feature on the forum where you can pick images of top celebrities in different categories as your avatar. I was trying to change my avatar, but the upload didn't work. I thought "Choose Avatar from Gallery" meant the same as "Upload Avatar from Gallery," but it turns out you can select from a list of available celebrities in the gallery. I really like this feature. As you can see there on my avatar, I used that of Satoshi nakomato  8). There's Hal finney and so many others. So,did anyone else not know about it?

It's the SMF forum default feature for an avatar I remember the first time I used that feature on my first SMF forum about PTC many years ago I used a Bruce Willis avatar it was one of the most popular back then it is still popular now, the other popular Bitcoin forums did not use this feature and the configuration is different because of avatar campaign and maybe because to set them apart from the other SMF based forum.

You may not know this avatar placement has been updated long ago. You can use any type of meme/celebrity image you like. Only then will updates be changed very quickly and use may be banned, as in Bitcoin forums.

You cannot just make use of any image like that without considering the size of the image before trying to upload it, there's a specified image standard format required for use on avatars, if the image you're loading doesn't tally with the same expected format then it will not get uploaded, if you want to confirm this, then try upload one from a campaign thread and see if it would no work perfectly ok, just as you have expected.

I noticed this feature, but the avatar sizes are still small. Has anyone tried uploading animated avatars, whether they were with  .gif or fake .png extension? I don't know whether it is allowed to upload such avatars or not.
I tried uploading some avatars using URLs but it gives broken results.

.gif file format works, you can see it as example url when you choose "Specify avatar by URL"

And what is a fake .png extension? Do you mean a malware script in an image? If that's the case, i don't think one should try it. Also with this version of smf, i guess the forum is optimized and more secured.

I have always seen this feature in that section of the forum anytime I want to change my avatar, but "my bad" that I've always thought that clicking the "choose avatar from gallery" will open my phone or computer gallery for me to choose any picture I want from there, never did I think or thought that that feature is for me to choose avatar of celebrities that are stored in the forum system.

Good feature, though not one to go crazy about, since choosing any of those celebrities as your avatar does not make you the celebrity, or give you any special privileges, I don't see why I should consider this a cool feature, or something to even start a new thread for.

While I was updating my avatar, I think I noticed something like that but was not really careful enough to pay any attention to it. I just looked for another option that allowed me to upload from my phone gallery. If I were not already putting on a paid avatar, I would have loved to text this out and find out the number of celebrities on the list. Although it doesn't really seem like a mind-blowing feature.

I am not wrong to reply to your post and this is my experience and it is only an avatar in our account because we also need it when we want to take the picture.
What I have tried the type of image is .jpg and .png if for the type of picture. I have never been and I have tried to add images with my childhood photos. Since first time here. :D
The picture section can also be used for campaigns in various services such as tokens and bitcoin because usually a service must require images from their projects, as I am in the job of Thormixer.

No, it is making the .gif extension to be .png, which is a way to allow creating animations avatar if .gif is not supported, but since .gif works, there is no need to try it.

Ah, okay, i think that is a .apng file format. It is an "animated .png" file to be exact, just like in bitcointalk way back before allowing to be uploaded in avatars.

I thought Satoshi Nakomato was supposed to be anonymous and no one really knows for sure how he looks like then how are you sure to use his picture?

I recently stumbled across that feature too and was curious if it was the same as uploading avatar from gallery but since i am aware and used to uploading from gallery i just didn’t click to find out.
