Forum was down yesterday without any prior announcement and warnings from admins.
If this was a planned maintenance that should be announced before, and if not than it should be posted in official telegram or other channels, this is very important for business that are advertising in forum.
What do you think about this incident and is there any official explanation posted?

The forum was often closed, I don't know why the admin updated the forum. And my profile was messed up especially karma got zero I was very scared. Therefore, before updating the forum, all members must be informed that the forum will be temporarily closed. We would have been very attentive if the admin had done this communication later.
-
Sometimes shit happens guys. I got the notification that all my karma was removed and tried accessing the forum to find that the host just wasn't responding. I happen to be 1 that has the admin on telegram so I sent him a message to find out that he was aware of the issue and working on getting it fixed. It was not a planned maintenance.
Just relax and be assured that when things happen, it's not intentional in most cases and people are working to fix the issue ASAP.

Maybe there was a notification, but since the forum was offline, we couldn't read it. ;)

What if it wasn't planned?
I believe that the admin (or whoever keeps these things under control) had much more important things to deal with than informing us that the forum is offline. No website owner likes it when his site is offline, now everything is fine. I hope that if there was, the problem has been fixed.

Most of the time, the forum goes offline due to a host issue rather than an admin issue; it also happens on other forums. The Karma glitch was the only thing that drew my attention, but it feels good to have everything back to normal. No panic

There was a short announcement from admin there:
Server currently offline, we'll be back shortly.
Might take up to 5h

I also experienced this down time sincerely speaking it's very annoying seeing that one was cut off without prior notice and a form of announcement to show that how long it would last before waking up back. It make one look very weak and sucking I believe before next shorting down a kind of memo should be posted or let the admins /mods announced to their various community and localities to able us be aware of the shutdown, except it was a domain attack which was restored back by the forum Dev.

wow thought was only me that experience such. I just received notification from my telegram notifier saying that have received a negative karma, which lead to all my karma's disappearing . So wanted to access the forum so that I can send some complains to the admin but I couldn't Access it . At first I was worried but just decided to give it some time, then lateron I received another notification saying have received the number of my karma's again then I was relief to see such notification, and I try accessing the forum and was working fine again.

Sometimes the AltcoinsTalks forum also has some problems and I can't access it. Maybe it's a server error and it usually lasts about 1 hour and no one can notify us in advance. I usually report this issue on AltcoinsTalks Telegram so admin can check and restore.
Yesterday, the forum's suspension was part of the admin's maintenance plan. Maintenance is not an unexpected incident, next time admin can notify about 1 day in advance so everyone knows and is prepared.
-
The error that happened here yesterday have actually happened before which I am aware of, but it didn't took so long like that of last night. For the yesterday gateway error, I was actually trying to publish my post before the error started, I checked back after one hour but same error was still there, I had to abandoned it till this morning before I could publish my post.
@OP, I don't think this was an international error, if really there was an intended maintenance, I guess the admin will mention it.

Ouh it turns out there is an official telegram group altcoinstalks forum, I didn't know about this. :D
When the forum went down we were confused about what happened, even though we knew it was probably routine maintenance but the question was karma that disappeared from the telegram notification but after that it came back again.
Thankfully we now know the channel.
-
I could not access the forum whole day and first thing I thought was that someone attacked the forum and tried to crush it because of new wave of advertising privacy services.
Creating independent forum status page would be cool to have, and there are some services who can do that, but I was wondering how often is stuff like this happening?

Good, I don't use Telegram, but I will bookmarket it.
5 hours is a lot of time, but the problem does not seem to be related to DDoS or hosting service. Having one person to monitor all of these things is very annoying, but it is difficult to trust many dev for running such forums, so I wish the best to @admin.

Sometimes shit happens guys. I got the notification that all my karma was removed and tried accessing the forum to find that the host just wasn't responding.
This karma case really gave me a mini heart attack, haha, as when I saw mine went to zero, I started to have thoughts of what would I have done wrong, I didn't scam anyone, did nothing wrong, and at the end, I have this thought that is it April, maybe this forum have some April fool thing and this is just a trick to fool us into thinking that we lost all of our karma. But then I realize its not April hehe.
Well, the time here in my place was of morning when the forum was down, so I was not affected by its being down, but what's I was more affected is the negative karma notification. After seeing the notification and seeing the website down, I assumed it might be a glitch so, I slept again, and after waking again, I checked and confirmed it was really a glitch.
I hope in future we might not have to see such problems.

Shortly ;D I am sure it was more than 5 hours with forum being offline and not accessible, but good thing it came back up again.
This @AltcoinsForum is talking group chat in telegram, is there any official announcement channel for forum?
I found out there is another telegram channel with last ANN post made in December 31.
Is this legit and official or fake? https://t.me/altcoinstalks

It is official. The link to it can be found at the top of the forum in the line of links to official social media accounts of the forum. But there was no announcement about this situation this time, so I gave a link where there was news.

Is there a chance to ban any kind of promotion and sharing of airdrop information on this TG channel?
All these things already exist on the forum, and some of us are not obsessive about worthless airdrops.

OK, it can always happen that some spam gets through. I'm fine if it's an incident and not a regularly permitted behaviour.
When he already talked about the forum being down, I received a message from the server a while ago that it was overloaded. Everything returned to normal very quickly, I hope we don't have a problem with hosting.

I received the same error message few minutes ago when I tried to open new page.
Clicking on refresh button fixed it, but this is the first time I saw it since I teleported here.

Maybe it is better to create a custom page for this kind of error.
Something with altoinstalks logo and a message "server under maintenance "

Several times I encountered a page like this, when I wanted to view my profile, when I wanted to reply to a post, when I wanted to open several sub forums, this kind of error often appeared.
It seems you are right, that this is a hosting problem, and I think this should be fixed immediately, because to be honest, this is a bit annoying when I want to be active on this forum.

I can confirm that the problem is still ongoing, the error rate has become less, but it is annoying. I hope it will end quickly.
-
And from time to time, when we post in the last 24 hours, the forum will act strange and says it is down.
But then when I retry and resend my reply it will get in.
Maybe the admin is really tweaking a lot from the server side as the traffic could be getting bigger by every day as most of us have transported here.
-
I don`t know if anyone else has encountered this, but I came across this page (shared below) today and after clicking on the "now click here" it will take you back to Homepage instead of your intended page, did the admin intentionally do this or is it a bug also?
I didn`t see the need to create a new thread since this one is partially related, so I decided to ask the question here.

I had the same error page today.
Refreshing page didnt help, so I had to close it and open again.
Maybe admin is making some changes in forum, but this error pages started to happen after server issue when forum was not available for a long time.

It happened again, but this time I wanted to vote in a poll when the error came in and on clicking "Now click here" it took me to the homepage again. It won`t be nice if it keeps occurring frequently cause it could be seen as a nuance, imagine after typing all you want to say and clicking "post" these pages pop up and all that you`ve written will be lost (since there is no draft that`ll save it automatically).
Admin, should work on it and get rid of it completely or limit the number of times it appears daily.

admin explained in other threads. The error occurs after the server upgrade, work is being done to fix it.
Keep in mind that it is much more complicated to search for and fix a bug if the application is live and you have a certain number of users at any time.
Admin, should work on it and get rid of it completely or limit the number of times it appears daily.
it is not something that anyone can limit to a certain number during the day. It is an error message, and only when the error has been corrected the message will stop appearing.

Now, I am actually wondering if it makes sense for us to always come up with a new "forum down" thread anytime we try accessing the forum and can't due to maybe an unplanned maintance or something similar, we all know that anything can happen any time as long as the internet is concerned, if it's not a ddos attack, it could be other unprecedented issues with the server, or the host, which could cause the forum to go offline at any time without prior notice, the admin can't be blamed because it's absolutely no fault of his, infact, he's been working really hard to ensure the smooth running of the forum as far as I can tell.
We should expect things like this to happen from time to time; and not come up with threads like this every time the forum is unaccessible for whatever reason, for we all know it will always come back up even though it takes some time.
-

The only issue I have is the fact that users don`t keep all the complaints in a single thread; if all the complaints were being made in a single thread, it would have made more sense and also prevented clustering of "forum-related" boards with error threads. It would be nice if anyone experiencing this issue came to this thread and commented on his/her own issues rather than creating a new thread for theirs.
In bitcointalk, even if there's a 15-minute downtime of the forum, you`ll still see threads popping up here and there complaining about being unable to access the forum, but the only difference is that over there, duplicate threads are being reported and deleted.
-
Situation is getting better and I didnt experience any error pages today, everything is loading fast and maybe admin already fixed those server problems.
We should all have more patience and understanding for altcoinstalks team.

Lucky for you mate but in my side? there are lots of GERR error yesterday that I need to rest for some hour as it is frustrating when you wanted to post your typing and suddenly this GERR will appear even how many times I refreshed the Site? lets see today if this will still happen(hoping not ).

Altcoinstalks forum was down for me today and I couldn't access any page.
I don't know how long this lasted but I think it was between 30 minutes and one hour, and cloudflare didn't help much.
Does anyone (inclduing admin) knows what was the problem? Was this ddos attack or something else?

Does anyone (inclduing admin) knows what was the problem? Was this ddos attack or something else?
It was done intentionally maybe for minor changes. The specific reason was not stated but admin mentioned in the chat that the forum will be offline.
The exact message was
'The forum will be offline for a short period of time between today & tomorrow'

That was the exact words of the admin and it is still in the chats not cleared yet. When the traffic here was not high, I don't think that such schedule maintenance do happen, but since there's an increased activities here, we should occasionally expect such downtime.
It is now in the place of the admin to choose a way to effect maintenance without going offline. I also think that a few mins downtime will also not cause much havoc in the forum.
-
If this was another planned maintenance work than it should be posted on top as news announcement like other forums are doing.
Posting this in chat is not bad but this can get hidden easy with more posts from other people, so maybe admin should add sticky posts in chat.
-

Again, a large number of users will not see that message even the moment the forum goes offline, and there will be those who are not sure what happened to the forum.
Instead, if the forum goes offline as planned, it is logical to set up an ordinary HTML page during that time with a notification that the forum is in the process of upgrading or regular maintenance, instead of an indefinite message from the hosting "Connection time out".

There was an ANN in Altt Chat:
admin [27|Jun 01:45 PM]: The forum will be offline for a short period of time between today & tomorrow

Maintenance may require stopping the server, but I agree with you.

I don't read the chat very often, and I didn't know that admin uses chat for this purpose.
Frequent cleaning is maybe needed but it makes me use it less and only for posting links for admin sometimes.
There is also forum telegram account but I think it's not active with news updates.

I agree, but admin is probably busy for that.

This happened about 20-30 minutes ago. Is there anyone else who experienced this? I thought the forum was being spammed by some group because of what admin tweeted about suing a Government ;D

It may be either due to an error in Settings.php led to a problem in the database, or due to connection problems.
The error did not persist for long because I did not find it in Is it down? Check at Down services

Otherwise people/users will be Confused. So i wish in future we will get an announcement if need any maintenance of any problem.
And may many thanks admin for within short time solve this problem. Now sever is well. We are doing very smoothly.

I missed this downtime and I didnt have any problems with Altcoinstalks website today.
Maybe admin announced some maintenance work before but I didnt saw anything about that yesterday.
We are getting bigger so maybe someone is attacking the forum.

I am glad AltcoinsTalks forum is working fine today, but it's a bad day for bitcointalk forum, in last few hours that forum is unusable and people reported many errors.
Is there any topic here about Bitcointalk where we can make discussion about that subject, I don't want to open another topic just for this?

No wonder when I opened Bitcointalk today, it took a while to load. At first, I thought it was the internet connection or browser on my PC that was having problems.
Even just now, when I was about to post there, it appeared Bad gateway with Error code 502.

Previously, I also had problems accessing Altcoinstalks.

So far its getting stable now unlike earlier that its hard to access bitcointalk, and i didn't experience downtime for the past 3 hours, which is good.

I don't know how many hours a user would have to be connected to get alarmed because they get a set of HTTP status codes, but first of all, be patient, and that's all. In fact, I can say that in my case I haven't seen them, so let it go, that's not always something that affects all users.

If you are replying to the op after the first page of the thread, you should endeavor to quote the OP's post so that those reading your comment can easily read the post you are replying to without leaving the page they are on.
This makes reading and replying very convinient for readers, as well as way much more easier to understand.

I saw theymos' announcement that it was a very large and serious DDoS attack and that it was very difficult to fully control it. Hence the interruptions and Cloudflare checks.
Such attacks require resources and end up costing a lot. I am interested in what is the reason for someone to spend a significant amount of money to make the work of a forum difficult for a short time.

Regarding Tor, I was not able to access BTT yesterday or today, but as far as I can see it works with VPN. I don't know what amount of money is involved in order to achieve something like this, but it seems to me that there are only two options - either it is an angry member who is sitting on a few tens of BTC and has no problem burning some of it, or the attack comes from some government agency for reasons known only to them.

Why do you make the topic Off topic, now you give a course on how to respond, post.
What a stupid thing, I've never read you on BTT, it must be because I have you on ignored. Do the same, if my post bothers you, or report it.
There are always teachers where they think they should teach.

Dissatisfied users or groups of users, dissatisfied managers, dissatisfied former moderators... The list of "who" might want something like this could be very long, I have only given some examples. The attack can also be the prelude to another more aggressive and long-lasting one (the longest DDoS in history lasted 509 hours), and normally the function is always the same, to annoy.
On some dark net forums people can request a DDoS attack for a few dollars. The price varies depending on the objective and duration of the attack.

509 hours?? That's over 5 weeks of hitting straight.

I can confirm this and in fact they are not just available on the darknet, but even on the clearnet websites too (Nightmarestresser and Stresse come into mind before both were swiftly banned by Bitcointalk). I'm pretty sure they are using bulletproof hosts who ignore things like DMCAs and abuse reports, to the point where federal agents have to raid their data centers and shut them down.

When the problem occurred, I tried to access it with my connection and also using Tor., so it may be something with your connection. As for how much a DDoS attack can cost, it depends on the number of requests per second you want to send, the more requests used the more expensive it will be, since more connections and zombie networks are used. As I said in another of my posts in this thread, there are many places where you can request an attack for a few dollars., but with BTT that has not been the case.
509 hours?? That's over 5 weeks of hitting straight.
Yeah, 509 hours. But there have been other types with worse consequences. If you are curious, check out this article:
