Crypto Saved Julian Assange, His Brother Says

Hours after Julian Assange pled guilty on Wednesday to a single charge of violating the U.S. Espionage Act, securing his freedom and bringing a 14-year, globe-spanning legal saga to a close, the WikiLeaks founder’s brother expressed gratitude to the crypto community, stating his belief that crypto donations saved Assange from a perpetually grim future.

“I have no doubt that [Julian] would not be where he is now if the AssangeDAO community hadn’t been so generous and raised so much money to contribute to his fight for freedom,” Gabriel Shipton, Assange’s half-brother, told Decrypt on Wednesday in an exclusive interview. “In short, it saved his life.”... I don't know how much of his statement is true. But i remember Wikileaks was one of few which accept Bitcoin in the early days, which criticized by Satoshi for attracting too much attention. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

I don't think there is any exaggeration in the article, because it is quite clear that the funds collected through crypto donations are due to a good deed that Assange is a free man today. There is talk of as much as $53 million in donations that were used for active lobbying by all possible means, which included trips to Washington, where his half-brother even spoke in Congress.

Not only did cryptocurrencies provide much needed money for defense and lobbying, but someone donated 8 BTC after his release to help him get on with his life. Assange really lived through a difficult period from Satoshi himself begging him not to accept BTC on Wiki, to the fact that cryptocurrencies made him a free man again.

This truly shows the decentralization of crypto, and to a huge extent shows that some altcoins have very good value, when used the right way they can be a good force for the community and allow that same community to remain anonymous and protected.

It is also great to see how satoshi wanted to protect bitcoin in its infancy stage. He did not doubt the potentials of his creation but wanted to see it bud fully before getting such an important use case. At this point it can be accepted by as many platforms that will be willing to have it.

congrats to Assange for standing free press. i find the government a bit friendly to him actually because for all we know they can track the donations to his cause  and block the wallets from cashing out. if they take it seriously.

but yep 14 years of sufferings seem enough to make it a hellish life. i wonder if this is also going to happen to Ulbright one day and that guy comes out clean like Andy Dufresne since Trump promised to let him out too.

I think he means it, as according to the news only in 2022 the anonymous organization raised $53 Million worth of ETH which is not a small amount. So yeah he must mean it that amount of money has provided his half-brother a lot of facilities like meetings with his wife when he was in the embassy I suppose where he had two children.

Overall I am also glad he is out now, but who knows for how long? I mean they can find another way to keep him in jail but as for now, I am sure he is going to spend his most of time with his family. I don't know if there is any track of the funds they have raised, I mean it is sure not every penny has been used to help him out, there must be some left.

Finally, Assange's saga has ended and he has gained his freedom. He is now convalescing on a Pacific island and enjoying spending the 8BTC($500,000) that he received as a gift to cover his and his family's travel expenses.

What caught my attention in the article is that Satoshi at the time pleaded with WikiLeaks not to accept Bitcoin donations, fearing that the integration would attract government scrutiny to the cryptocurrency but then Assange was forced to use Bitcoin after WikiLeaks was blacklisted from accepting traditional payment methods. It is interesting to read this historical information about Satoshi's relationship with WikiLeaks and how Bitcoin was used in its early days to evade government bans.

Perhaps Satoshi really knows the implication and so time and time again as we say, he is a genius. Nevertheless, since Satoshi disappeared already and then Assange supporter has no other means to support him, and so he has to accept donations thru Bitcoin and it really work up to the time that he is now free.

And I don't think that this is negative to Bitcoin, on the contrary, it just shows how powerful Satoshi's creation in. When Assange was blacklisted to accept fiat and other traditional means as donation, here comes Bitcoin to save the day.

Good thing government barely knows about Bitcoin at that time, otherwise they would try 51% or transaction spam attack.

Although I think he does not need donations, especially since he might write a book and achieve sales. Those who stood with him in the early days are the ones who deserve thanks, and I believe that cryptocurrencies were part of that.

Do you have details about what happened between Satoshi and Julian Assange and not accepting Bitcoin on Wiki? It is a strange behavior on the part of Satoshi.

They did not raise funds in the form of BTC but in the form of ETH. The amount in ETH was $53 million dollar. But he also received 8 BTC recently and they have raised an extra $507,599 on their site.

Surely, the saga of Julian Assange and how cryptocurrency provided him the lifeline he direly needed to survive against the onslaught of the still mot powerful country in the world would be talked in years to come and can be one of the best examples of how cryptocurrency can make a big impact on people. With a whopping $53 million raised to help Julian in his fight vs. the USA. this is showing us how the cryptocurrency community can be a big force to reckon with as there are people who can come together united for a great cause. And I think this same power will always be there just ready to be tap anytime when someone really needs it. I am so happy that finally Julian got free and I am looking forward to see Ross William Ulbricht to also walk free when Donald Trump will be on the White House next year.

Crypto Saved Julian Assange, His Brother Says
says]here[/url].
The headline is an exaggeration for me.

Charitable and good people saved his life through crypto, not actually crypto saving his life. People could actually have cryptocurrency and still decide not to be of any help to him.

I understand your reason. But don't forget that those charitable or good people would have harder time giving donation if they use fiat instead. Bank may impose higher transfer fee or even deny politics related donation. And it's nearly impossible to make anonymous donation using fiat.

Satoshi would not prefer to be against the government, if this were true he would probably accept KYC and avoid mixers.
He wrote this and disappeared hours later.

Did Julian Assan talk about Satoshi or Bitcoin during 2010?

Bitcoin obviously played a factor in this, considering that Wikileaks was one of the first to accept donations in bitcoins back in the day, but in this article his (half-)brother is talking about AssangeDAO, not Bitcoin.

Although it should not be implied that there weren't more people donating to Assange's legal defense over the years, because indeed, many people did play their parts.

Satoshi had a reason for it. As you know, the government has tried every possible way to stop Bitcoin, but it is already too late. It's not possible to shut down thousands of nodes today. But if the government tried to stop Bitcoin in the early days, they probably had a chance to shut it down somehow. I guess Satoshi had this fear in the early days, which he expressed last time.

But mystically, Satoshi disappeared. After I had read those stories about Wikileaks and Julian Assange, I started to think, what if Julian Assange were Satoshi? But I don't think he is.

Talk? Wikileaks decide to accept Bitcoin back, where Julian Assange is the one who founded Wikileaks and operate it along with other people.

I doubt it. Creating Bitcoin and founded Wikileaks doesn't sound like what one people can do.

I doubt it as well. But you know, people tried to match every other information with each other to detect Satoshi. But they never ended up matching up. At first, theymos decided to share Satoshi's IP address that he uses but later he decided to keep it secret and he said he would share it after a decade. I believe it's been over a decade but theymos did not disclose Satoshi's IP address. I believe if theymos share his IP addresses, a lot of debated will end but once again, new debates will start. Julian has some connection with Satoshi and I guess they have exchanged several emails (If I am not wrong). So, yeah, I also think Juian is not Satoshi.
