Title: preview option don't longer save Post?
Post by: SmartGold01 on July 06, 2024, 08:48:42 PM
Team I don't know if this weren't applicable here..
I would want to suggest that if someone is making post and when he previewed his post before posting there should be a kind of autosave post, whereby if someone mistake tap on the exit tab or window they can easily restore it back immediately they go back to topic the were posting.

The reason I brought this discussion and suggestion is that I have been a victim of this for several occasions I couldn't restore my post after I tried to minimize my browser, all post gone even without me refreshing my page. I think there should be a kind of autosave after preview then if the post wipes off you can copy back post to continue discussion, sometimes when post are lost it makes it very hard to start the discussion allover or like to retype the exact thing you were saying before like one can't be in the mode where she was before the post were lost. If this options are being added it could be easier to just check the draft to copy the post to continue

This can only work if someone previews their post then the post is automatically saved as draft, but in case where the person do not preview then s/he lost the post forever.

I don't know if this discussion had already been discussed here, if any then I don't mind locking this topic to continue with what others has already put down there.

There was no draft option on preview button here ever. Not a bad idea to have it, if it will be not so hard to implement. I'm sure admin will look into this when he'll have time.

preview button does not save posts, but after clicking on preview or post, a copy of the posts was saved on the draft page.
The SMF program comes with a draft page option, but I think admin disabled it, and a similar question was asked, and admin said this option might be activated in the future if there was a demand (it was stopped due to its consumption of resources)

This would take a lot more server resources, and I don't think it is needed to save previews as a draft.
You can simply use a notepad on your computer and first compose your post there before posting it to forum.
One good reason for saving posts is when writing long posts with important information and your internet or electricity cuts off.

This happened to me many times and the situation was really irritating for me. Moreover, after making a post with so much efforts, I had to create that post again just for a wrong click this is really time consuming post. So this will be really good even it need more resources to implement draft options.
Anyway I would say instead of using a computer notepad if one has an account on the bitcoin talk forum and if he uses tryninja's auto draft script then he can first go to the archival board and open a topic there to create a post for the alt cointalk forum and then when the post is done  You can paste it here to get it done.

Yeah that is a good idea.
I totally forgot about tryninja's auto draft script, and maybe someone can fork it to work with AltcoinsTalks forum.
Depending on browsers you are using this can work with Violentmonkey, Greasemonkey and similar extensions.

Here is the link if someone knows how to do this:

And here is the link for all tryninja scripts, maybe you can find more useful things:

I can create similar script. However, I don't see much people using scripts...

In the end, the best the admin to just create the draft pages or  just to save long posts by yourself. Personally, I use standard notes
http://standardnotes.com/

Much more reliable than auto save and you can use across different devices.

I never heard about that but I will check it out.
I see it is open source software, it's encrypted and available on all devices.
Is Free version enough for regular users or you think paid versions are needed.

I use the free version for about 7 years. I love it.

You can acess in any browser or in the app for mobiles.

Ofc you shouldn't store sensitive information there.

I gave it a try and it seems to be useful. It will not be useful in the forum except with userscript, but it may be good for writing regular Notes.

Sometimes I write posts in my desktop at work (where I am not logged in forums), then just paddle in standard notes and post in my phone

Is anything stored on cloud or only locally?
I wouldn't use this for anything serious, but simple notepad was doing the job for me when I wanted to save something for later in digital form.
For saving in physical form I still prefer writing with pen on piece of paper, and that makes me not forget this ancient ''skill'' ;)

Certainly... but how often do you store serious stuff? This is useful for everything else. I used it today to write a review for joker mixer

I don't do it, but there are people who are storing everything online in cloud, password, keys, card data, addresses, even bitcoin seed words  :P
I prefer storing most things locally with additional backup, so I don't have to trust other or blame someone else if things go wrong.
Using this tool for making forum post is a good use case.

It is definitely something to think about re-enabling, because the drafts page is very useful to get back a post you were editing which you accidentally closed the tab for.

I use it a lot of times on Bitcointalk and it has saved me a lot of time.

As of now there is really no way you can restore a post you were editing that's been trashed except for copying and pasting it into an editor and back again.
