I don't know about that but I believe that if what you are saying is true it must have been programmed and don't also forget that we only use two devices frequently to access the internet which is a mobile device and a PC. You should take your time to navigate round the forum and look for boards of your interest and start learning so that you can gain knowledge and grow in the forum by contributing quality discussions that will be helpful other forum members. Your first post will give your three badges automatically.

Welcome to the forum.

You are welcome, mate. To avoid common mistakes, start by reading the forum rules through this link https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=45867.0.
Also learn what karma is. We have two types of karma, positive karma and negative karma. You get positive karma when you produce great posts that are useful to the forum. Your good contribution and positive karma is what will earn you a reputation in the forum. And negative karma is when you misbehave and go against forum rules.

Welcome to the forum.
I am saying true because I have checked the badges and my profile settings from top to bottom. I have spent time on learning the badges and other things and I did not find how this forum knows what device I am using and what other types of information this forum is getting from us. Thanks for the advice I will try to contribute with quality discussions. Thanks for welcoming me.

ok so this forum must be getting our user agent information and then using a tool like this website have and then finding out which device we are using. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for sharing the rules link but I already read it. This information is on top of the page when I signed up I read all of those threads and some make sense some not but with time I will get around them. Thanks for giving me an overview of karma I will try to get as much as I can.

You guys were helpful

I am very interested to see what we can learn from you because every newbie to this forum has a specialty and a particular thing they have to contribute if only they would remain original and express themselves on topics that they know about properly. As a new member of the forum who has the intention to learn, I advise you to comment on topics that you are familiar with, and then when you get to topics that you have no familiarity with, it becomes advisable that you just read through and try to learn from others for the future.

Have you Linux user ? Or Have you used the mobile device for accessing this altcointalk forum ?
Forum knows that what device you are using maybe by the cookies or the program set on based your display.
Anyway I haven't used the Linux OS but it is still show that batch, I don't know the reason may be admin can clarify this. Or you can move this topic to the Forum related board (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?board=49.0).

First of all I welcome you to this forum, may your journey in this forum be happy. However, I don't know much about the topic you have raised, as I am also some new new in this forum, I have only been here for a month.

Like you, I have mobile user badges on my profile, but mainly I work on PC. I only opened my account on mobile when I opened it, that's why my profile is showing mobile user badges. You also post on mobile so mobile user badges appear on your profile, but I don't know much about how they identify this.

Perhaps that how the admin or the owner of this community set up everything here, they can identify everything, from the OS, to other information. Why you ask though? are you afraid that the community knows that you are a Linux and mobile user?

Some of us might be using the same, but still though, we tend to stay here to learn and obviously since this is a community, we will have to communicate and have conversation.

In any case, welcome to the community!!!

When you go to a website, the browser makes a request to the website you are visiting, and the website's server replies with a response. Inside that request, it sends something called a User Agent, which is a text string that contains your browser version and your operating system name and version and stuff like that.

So Altcoinstalks must be reading your user agent and is deducing which OS you are using from there. Including if you are using Android or iOS.

cookies file does not contain page visited, login details, search History and the data that is shared by the user so knowing the type of operating system is done via http.
I do not see a Linux user sign at the bottom of your icons.

Yeah, this is basically how you get different designs of the same website depending on your screen size and software

I am not judging you or trying to offend you but dear fellow you must reply in a contribution as OP want to know how this forum knew he is using which device and you are just expanding the same words. I hope you won't mind me. I am only sharing this because it can lead you to lesser or negative karma if other members found it spammy.

You are right, I don't think this forum requires us to allow cookies means AFAIK this forum has no cookies system right? I just checked my cookies and this forum have none on my side while BTT does have some cookies.

No, the forum needs to allow cookies, otherwise PHPSESSID will not recognize your device and will ask you to log out.
There are some other files, such as ALTT10, but if you are using a browser such as Tor, they will be deleted after closing the window.

I am here to learn from all of you guys and I can see learning is not the only thing we can do here because this forum owner like to focus the interest of every member toward making money. I saw the description at the end of the page where the owner has emphasized that we can discuss about tokens and coins and members can join airdrops and ICO etc. I am not here to join any of those at least for now. But to learn what is really happening on this forum. Why people love to spend their time here. There must be some interesting thing.

I will keep your advice in mind. But as you can see someone gave me negative karma which means I did something wrong right? But what I did wrong?

Have you Linux user ? Or Have you used the mobile device for accessing this altcointalk forum ?

I did not use Linux OS but I did use mobile and desktop to visit the forum. I now know how the forum knows what device I am using and what Operating system I am using. I read an article about how sites can know such things and thanks to Yamane_Keto his reply helped me know how this forum could know such information. It's not only this forum but every forum and every site with HTTPS that can get such information.

Is there any chance that you are also accessing this forum from the Tor Browser maybe it has to do something with the Tor browser's setting that this forum thought I was using a Linux browser.

I think a Tor user badge would be very cool too. Maybe admin can implement in the future.

That would be cool While the ability to select specific badges for display under each post is a positive feature, I believe the current badge designs are rather basic. It would be beneficial to have more visually appealing options, such as badges with intricate designs and engaging text.

I assume you already know that Android is based primarily on the Linux kernel and, to a lesser extent, other open source software, but does not base any code on Tor.

Technically the administrator would have no problem adding a badge for Tor users, but I highly doubt he would do so, since that would be "touching" (let's say it in some way) the privacy of the users, and that is one of the first things we must respect.

Reddit is a forum where cryptocurrency related matters are discussed like we do here and we do in bitcointalk. And Linux is an operating system which like Windows though it is not but I am just giving you an example. I have an account in reddit and also I have used Linux operating system so op was saying, he was in reddit and was using Linux over there and here he is using Mobile and not Linux system. Op if you were in reddit then you are familiar with most of the things or discussions here and the only difficulty you might face is the the bogus sub Boards in the forum. But frequent visiting and navigating will make you to understand more. Read more than posting at this stage of the forum.

Why are you surprised in this time and age how the forum will know what type of device you used to access the forum? I guess the IP address for mobile device is different from when using a laptop computer, so the system can easily dictate what you’re using to access the forum. I haven’t achieved that badge yet because I haven’t logged into the forum with my computer before that’s to show how accurate they are in given those badges by the activities listed there to give the badges.

Almost every website uses cookies though, or else you can't login here or they can't know your preference especially for ad related stuff and so many more. Well, privacy websites don't actually stores cookies, or even used it for longer time, may be a 24hrs expiration is sometimes enough for them.

I just checked what do you mean by PHPSESSID. I did not know about it but now I do, I used a cookie checker site and entered the link, and verified which cookie this forum is getting and it was the one you aforementioned. But they did not mention anywhere that this cookie was only deleted on Tor (if you were referring to PHPSESSID)

Got the point, I thought if your browser is not showing the cookies saved or allowed for this forum in the cookies category then maybe this forum is not getting any cookies from us. But I was wrong and thanks both to you for guidance.

I didn't mean to imply that I used Reddit on Linux; I mentioned it to let members know that I am not a newbie to cryptocurrency. I got not only the answer to my question but also learned much more. Multiple replies are always helpful, like on Reddit, although sometimes you don't receive positive responses there. By the way, we are discussing on Altcointalk, not Bitcointalk, as you mentioned at the end of your second line.

I assume you already know that Android is based primarily on the Linux kernel and, to a lesser extent, other open source software, but does not base any code on Tor.
Your assumption is correct; I was aware that Android is based on the Linux kernel, but I hadn't considered this information previously. However, it is a valid point. If I were to open my account on an Apple device, would this forum grant me an iOS badge, similar to the Kernel badge I received?

Does that mean if I access this site with an android phone I’ll also be given the “Linux user” badge? I just wanted to be clear about this, because I’ve seen it in several other profile.

Correct. When you access the forum with a smartphone that uses Android you get the "Linux user" badge, and when you access the forum with a smartphone that uses iOS (the iPhone operating system), you get the "Mobile User" badge.

I believe the ops is just asking out if his curiosity to know better how this forum works, but he should already know how websites uses the cookies function to get informations of the device and IPs of the website visitor, so I dont think this forum is anything different from that, between he is just a newbie a d he asking just a newbie question and I am glad that some members of the forum have helped with tons of explanations that can help the ops better understanding.

And since he is familiar with reddits I am sure he will have a great time discussing cryptocurrency related discussions here in the forum now that he is understanding the forum better.

You are welcome, I want you to first practice all the rules of this forum so that you can easily get an idea how to work here. I see your account profile that you have already earned two karma which is good for your account. You can earn a lot of karma whenever you research new content and analyze it all. Moreover this forum has admin community so they can see everything whether you are mobile or computer user. However keep in mind that you will get negative karma whenever you violate forum rules.
