Title: Tor full nodes popularity decreases
Post by: NotATether on July 18, 2024, 12:18:32 PM
Looking over here at Bitnodes.io (https://bitnodes.io/dashboard/90d/), we see that the number of Tor nodes is falling very rapidly.

Where you see tiny lines for Hetzner, OVH, Contabo and Google / AWS / Comcast, there is (was, actually) a huge chunk of Onion nodes.

But for some reason, it is shrinking at a very fast rate, although it still retains a very large amount.

Do you guys think the nodes themselves are going offline or are they just re-deploying without Tor?

Someone on other forum mentioned this link, https://stacker.news/items/612375 (https://stacker.news/items/612375). It speculate that bitnodes software got bugged, which may be true when other website such as https://coin.dance/nodes (https://coin.dance/nodes) doesn't report massive drop.

I'm not sure how Bitnodes would bug out like that, but if that is the case, then my theory is that Bitnodes bitcoin nodes have somehow lost Tor connectivity one by one to the other Tor nodes. Or maybe it could just be one node belonging to Bitnodes that has this issue, or even a misconfiguration in the Tor binary being used for connecting.
