Many people look at and participate at many gambling options with the thinking that it can be a good entertainment, to while away the time and of course in the process get the chance to win some money...what can be more ideal than that? However, reality can be painting a different picture contrary to what we assumed to be.
The fact is that gambling can be a stress reliever yes...but can also be leading to more stress to some.
In this research paper (https://www.greo.ca/Modules/EvidenceCentre/files/Buchanan%20et%20al%20(2020)_Stress%20and%20gambling_final.pdf), "the researchers reviewed articles on stress and gambling. They described how stress and gambling are related in three ways. First, gambling is used to escape stress. Second, gambling itself could cause stress. Third, altered stress reactions may be a risk factor for gambling disorder."
When then can we say that gambling is a stress reliever and not yet causing stress, the very thing we wanted to minimize in the first place?
-
Its sounds sketchy when s research declares gambling is a stress reliever.
Saying its stressful must be true. It should be stressful for any gambler who is not winning and losing a capital is stressful, not able to play the next day that he has to ask loan somewhere for capital. I assume many are doing this because they wager on casino games.
A person is more stressed when he is not really a gambler but lost a lot of hard earned money. And when bills filed up, thats when stress is unbearable.
-
When then can we say that gambling is a stress reliever and not yet causing stress, the very thing we wanted to minimize in the first place?
Gambling can be either a stress reliever or a source of stress, depending on the gambler. Gambling, when used for entertainment, becomes a source of stress relief. Gambling with a reasonable level of control during leisure time can be a stress reliever because it aids in relaxation.
However, when used to earn money, it causes stress. This is due to the unpredictable nature of gambling, making it difficult to achieve such a goal. Such a gambler will continue to try to win and eventually become frustrated. This frustration then fuels stress.
This is why I believe that gambling is not a bad thing in and of itself, but that gamblers make it appear bad by having the wrong motive for gambling, which has also affected how they gamble, resulting in excessive and problem gambling.

It is when you know how to stop and when you should stop, it has been the agony of every chronic gamblers to stop when they should.
It just feels like they should go on because they are not yet satisfied with their winnings, or have not reached the level of enjoyment, It really is stressful if you expect to win and you cannot reach your goal of winning.

When it doesn't hurt your pocket? I think it's the best way to measure it. Gambling to relieve stress can be compared to other forms of fun and leisure such as going on vacations. Your budget for betting should be limited to the amount you're going to spend on other activities.
-
The fact is that gambling can be a stress reliever yes...but can also be leading to more stress to some.
One situation where I think that gambling can actually contribute to the stress a person is facing, or be the root cause of the stress itself, is when a gambler is gambling and losing an amount of money that they cannot afford to lose. If you are able to maintain responsibility when gambling, you will not be stressed or depressed about it.
-
win you win a jackpot that is life changing i guess your stress will be relieved. it will be stressful if you are losing that's for sure.
maybe when you are just starting to gambling for the first time, its just something that you are enticed like a lonely widow who suddenly started betting on horse race after going out with an old friend. but after losing $25k she will be anxious if her daughters will find out the money has been spent to gamble. its a terrible feeling that its coming and no amount of excuse for it.
-
I agree with the fact that gambling can be a source of entertainment and on the otherhand stress. This is the same as video games and both are proven to provide both. When we do it responsibly we can be entertained but if we do it indiscriminately it can lead us to stress and addiction. That is why it is important for us to put limits especially in gambling since we spend our own money on it.

Gambling is just like drugs when taken excess you become addicted to it and it will ruin you physically, mentally and emotionally. This is same with gambling, if you gamble responsible and only gamble for fun, you will be relieved from stress. On the other hand if you decide to see gambling as what you will use to win a fortune, you will not have peace anymore because your emotions will not be stable and stress comes in.
-
At first maybe yes, they think that gambling can make them enjoy the game, can enjoy the results very well, and especially can imagine achieving great success in gambling as advertised in their site promotions. Yes, this is a big assumption and hope for gamblers.
But the reality? I'm sure if those who consider it just for fun, they will only gamble a few times and not often. If those who are addicted and are really serious about gambling, they gamble not only for fun but also to gain the profits more than losses. It's just that in the results, it doesn't always work. There are those who really become pro gamblers and reap a lot of profits, no matter how. But there are also those who are increasingly addicted and actually experience big losses until they run out of whatever assets they have. many incidents like that start from fun gambling
-
Yes, gambling can be a good stress reliever, but whether it can lead to more stress or not depends on gambler whether he gambles responsibly or not.
Now, what's gambling responsibly?
1) You gamble with funds you can afford to lose, treat it as an entertainment spending, it won't lead to harm. 2) Your life is in order and you aren't gambling to escape IRL responsibilities.
Third, altered stress reactions may be a risk factor for gambling disorder.
I didn't understand what this meant, someone clarify?
-
I agreed with you gambling could triggered the angar in us while gambling because no one would lose huge amount an expected to be happy even though it's said everyone should gambling with the amount riskable but at some point when you keep seeing the lost coming you could be mad at yourself for the level of lost that came to you, whereby it has stir up mental stress. Usually placing bet online or gambling online only triggers mental stress while placing casino physically in local shop trigger mental and both body stress.
-
I thought you were talking about gaming not Gambling but gambling is one of the things that can increase stress if you have a bad day you may assume that your luck for the day will be bad and therefore all the things you may do from trading adventure or other may not give a good result.
-
When then can we say that gambling is a stress reliever and not yet causing stress, the very thing we wanted to minimize in the first place?
We can say that gambling is a stress reliever if you are stress and gamble to noticed reduction in stress in your body. This would be when you do not gamble too much and also when using just small amount of money. Using big amount of money to gamble alone can increase your adrenaline more and also makes your heart beat and rate rate to increase when gambling. Also if you are gambling when you suppose to be sleeping and when you suppose to be around some people relaxing, it can lead to stress. Anyone that can not control the way he is gambling and gambling than usual can experience stress from gambling.
-
When then can we say that gambling is a stress reliever and not yet causing stress, the very thing we wanted to minimize in the first place?
For me this is a very interesting question as i personally think at first gambling is a stress reliever, yeah stress reliever if we win but in gambling, there is no such thing as winning always, there are times that we lose and that's where the stress comes in, especially if the money you loss is a compromised money.
-
Reading the article, I have seen that it tackled the part where gambling is a stressor if you lose because of financial stuff. It stresses you out because you think you have lost money, and money is also a trigger for stress.
If you separate the two, then you can enjoy it. Just find other ways of entertainment.

When then can we say that gambling is a stress reliever and not yet causing stress, the very thing we wanted to minimize in the first place?
Hmmm. If you don't care about your losses, I guess.
I think gamblers are getting stressed on gambling because of the fact that they are affected whenever they are losing money, and it's not only when they are losing, but when they are winning as well. If they don't care about the money they're throwing into it, and just focus on the fact that it relieves their stress then they will not get more stressed into it. If they care about the money, they can just find another ways to relieve their stress. There are many and better ways out there to remove it.
It's okay for a gambler to spend many money on gambling as long their decision making will not get affected whether they win or lose. Just focus on relieving your stress and don't focus on the winnings or lost money. Unfortunately, that's not the case for most of the gamblers because they care more about the money.
-
When then can we say that gambling is a stress reliever and not yet causing stress, the very thing we wanted to minimize in the first place?
In my case it's true though, there are times that I will want to gamble because I wanted to get away and so this is my stress reliever. However, the issues arises when we lost and then it will cause stressed as well.
So it's very different per individual, again, I'm saying it base on experience, but if I say I win then all of my stress is gone and then I will have a better sleep. I guess the moral lesson here is that gambling might be a good stress reliever as long as we are going to win. And then follow the old saying of just gamble what you can afford to lose so that you will be good in the end.
-
Whatever bugs anyone when doing and doesn't give them enough time to think for themselves other than that should be tagged as being stressed. Gambling does that; it doesn't give people free time to think, except for them to calculate how they should bet and win. When the winning is not coming, anger kicks in, which can be regenerated into being stressed about the whole situation of not winning
-
"the researchers reviewed articles on stress and gambling. They described how stress and gambling are related in three ways. First, gambling is used to escape stress. Second, gambling itself could cause stress. Third, altered stress reactions may be a risk factor for gambling disorder."
Well, I can't say that he is totally right because maybe some people disagree with him, and they will quote me and try to prove me wrong. But for me, he says the right things. People come to gambling just to stay away for a while from stressful things and issues, and they find relief in these games. However, when they change this habit to earn from gambling, then they will gain more stress over whether they will win the bet or not, among many other things. So, he is right that people come to seek relief, but here they end up with more stress from it. If people really want to decrease their stress, then they need to adopt gambling for stress relief, not as a source of income.
-
Each person does have their own stress reliever and if they were really that getting used to when it comes to gambling then this is their primary option on which they would really be dealing up with it as their past time. Its not really that bad to play up gambling as long you would really be finding yourself to be that having that good control and moderation.
Its true that gambling is really could give out that kind of stress on the time or moment that you would really be losing up more money. We are just humans on which it would really be just that normal that there would really be those instances that you would really be stressing out more rather than on being a reliever.
-
If you gamble by being ready to lose the money set aside then it can disappear stress but when it is excessive then it can add more stress so it depends on the individual who does it, Okay many people say gambling is fun but sometimes they don't realize in depositing excessive money and continue to do it again.
Then there will be more stress experienced because it is addicted in an addictive game, also they expect to win from gambling and this is not part of the fun but looking for a source of profit.

Stress in gambling is constant, just like in life. And I think it's weird to try to escape everyday stress by gambling. Every player is afraid of losing their money, so in a casino you can only find the illusion of relaxation. It's better to be outdoors or spend time in a cafe.

There is no other way to relax but by staying in touch with nature works best not in gambling. As long as there is money involved in particular activity which requires risk to make gains or winnings that is I think accompanied by stress whether psychological or physical stress. If there is no money involved in a particular game the excitement will be gone because we expect something good when we beat other players so yeah it is not for me the best way to be a stress reliever but instead it could be a source.
-
I don't think gambling is a means of relieving stress since it's pretty stressful lol.
Entertainment-wise, yes, but not all entertainment is a stress reliever... IMO gambling is more suitable for killing time or pastime. For example, you don't play difficult video games like Hollow Knight, Counter-Strike, or Dota to relieve your stress (except you're extremely good at it or play with bots for easy wins).
If you want to release your stress, just go to a massage parlor or spa for therapy.

(...)
Not all stress is bad and the line between stress and excitement is very blurry. People are attracted to extreme emotions. Just like many like to watch scary horror movies (despite fear being considered a negative emotion) many gets addicted to the thrill of putting their money on the line and risking it by gambling.
Or maybe it's a bit like smoking. You get addicted to nicotine and the only "positive" thing is the relief when you satisfy the nicotine hunger which you put on yourself.

I do agree that stress is constant, we can't do anything to be stress-free as there's no such a thing as stress-free. All we have to do is minimize and handle stress as to not that become our enemy, i mean stress would not do harm to our body as it will result to anxiety disorder if not handled properly.

Stress isn't constant in gambling, it depends how what is at stake and why you're gambling, If you're gambling for fun then there should be not stress, mental stress or not involved.
Gambling only lead to more stress when there is an extreme level of emotions involved, Imagine a scenario where you're having a reunion hangout your probably your school mates from either high school or higher institutions after several years of seeing each other, if you guys are spending let's say a weekend together, and go for fun events like golfing, skiing or drinking while gambling about who does what best, there wouldn't be any level of stress attach because it's all fun at the end of the day. It's a similar case when you're gambling on casino or sports, if you choose not to let emotion and addiction get the better of you, then I don't see how this will increase your level of stress.

perhaps it could lead to stress when you are aiming for something other than fun i think if you gamble with the wrong kinds of people there would definitely be some stress involved for example a reunion with people you don’t like might make you more on edge and would make you a bit more sensitive and vulnerable gambling will make you want to show off so if you keep losing you might get stressed
environment is also a big factor in gambling and how it makes you feel whether stressed or relaxed

I believe that gambling helps reduce human stress. Everyone is under some pressure in their personal life and if gambling is done to reduce that stress then people can forget that stress which cannot be avoided in any other way. There is no harm in gambling once a week for a person who is under family pressure if he can manage the gambling within control. I saw a friend who spends time on betting after his duty. He told me that as long as he was gambling, he enjoyed gambling, which provided a temporary release from the human pressures of his everyday life.

Not surprised that your friend use gambling to relieve from stress. I dont know who has created a myth that gambling is only about something negative. Gambling can be done for earning, for fun, to kill time and as a stress reliever. For example some people to prefer to watch how fire is burning, how water is running, but someone find piece when he watch slots spin or balls fall in plinko. Everyone have their own stress relievers, as we all are different. Someone feel annoyed when someone is clicking his pen, when the other guy uses it to release steam.

The fact is that most gambling increases stress, not relieves stress, because if you always lose, stress will come to you.
-

Truly, losing in gambling brings stress. When you lose, there is always this ill feeling that causes an uneasy mind and a desire to chase lose and win more. This feeling of unrest is exacerbated when a gambler loses money he cannot afford to lose, resulting in emotional distress.
The reason for this emotional disturbance is that the gambler will begin to think about the bills that would have been paid with the money he lost. If the bill is urgent and requires an immediate offset, the gambler will begin making efforts to raise funds to pay it. This causes stress.
-
When then can we say that gambling is a stress reliever and not yet causing stress, the very thing we wanted to minimize in the first place?
Gambling is a stress reliever if you do everything right. Which includes using the money you can afford to lose to gamble, having a gambling budget and stick into it, sticking to games that you have knowledge about, not chasing losses and so many. When you do this you are not under any stress to recover or double your money. On the other hand gambling becomes a stress induced when you Gamble with the mindset that it is a way to make money, or that it is a get rich quick method, and other things that leads to failure in other human endeavors. I think when it relieves stress, it is call Eustress and when it induced stress, it is call distress.

Well said, but it is not easy for all gamblers to follow these healthy gambling practices that you have mentioned. In fact, every gambler has experienced stress as a result of making a poor gambling decision. I will add one more tip to the list you mentioned: gamblers should avoid the temptation of what is known as a sure game. There is no sure game, which is why it is called prediction. Most gamblers have been doomed while chasing sure games.
The funniest thing is paying a subscription fee to a prediction site in order to record winnings. This path can easily lead a gambler to a life of misery and stress unless he realizes that no prediction site or individual can provide a 100% guaranteed prediction.
-

You are right. Although gambling is considered to be a stress reliever, it may not always relieve stress but rather increase stress. There are many gamblers who gamble to meet their financial needs and then find that person has lost more money so how can he reduce his stress through gambling? There are also many who gamble to forget their external pressures, and the same may happen if he loses. But the pressure will ease a bit for those who win.

Well good point. Gambling is just a tool to trigger stress and I think addiction or gambling irresponsibly is the cause of it correct me if I'm wrong. Losing from gambling would trigger stress, making wrong decisions in gambling also one factor affecting stress. But all this can be avoided by just responsible gambling as those limits we have done might get us relaxed and calm.

In our psychology, there is always a desire to escape from reality and immerse yourself in a fantasy world. Sometimes, especially in moments of weakness, we just want to give up and forget about everything. That's why gambling is so attractive – it offers us the opportunity to break away from the mundane and the rules of self-discipline. But it is important to remember that this is just an illusion that can do more harm than good. Giving in to our desires is sometimes easy, but it is important to maintain balance and control over yourself. After all, our psychology is what makes us human, and we must learn to manage it, not be its prisoners.

Psychology is a branch of science that studies human behavior, and mentioning it as you propose in your context is like someone who practices the profession, I think there is some jargon - grammar in your idea. Or maybe it is the popular use that we give to phrases like "use your psychology."
There is something that 0t3p0t mentions, and it is the point, relax, and take it as something everyday, a few days ago I had years, seriously not weeks, years, that I not login a Casino "x", and I found $120 in the wallet, nice surprise, ready I played for a while and that's it, I know I have that money there, now.
In final conclusion, stay away from casinos if you can't handle stress, if you still can't do it, seek professional help, do therapy, prepare yourself, study the game, educate yourself, spend $100 on your well-being, the best bet you should make is to go to a specialist.

And if you losses, it might have compound effect on you, on your mental health and we all know that it is not good. We have been in that kind of situation before, and we all doesn't like that.
And that's why if we are stressed, it might be better not to gamble at all as our decision are clouded, and our mind is somewhat floating and just looking to escape but it will just be momentarily lull. So it's just better to relax and just concentrate on other things.

Indeed, gambling was solely designed for fun and as an activity meant to receive stress, bit it's quite unfortunate now that gambling has been misunderstood and many gamblers out there now a very huge misconception of gambling and now they allow gambling do the opposite to them, instead of to receive stress, it's now adding more stress to them and also causing them financial and emotional stress and sometimes even mental stress. This is really quite unfortunate. When one gambles for fun, without spending too much time and money on gambling, you'll really enjoy gambling because it's one of the best ways to just sit and relax your brains after a stress filled day.

Everything that was created as a stress reliever can produce more stress if a person is nervous, impatient and, for example, lazy to read manual to find out how things work. Even reading a book can be stressful, if you are disrupted all the time, or you are reading in uncomfortable conditions. However, I would be careful to call gambling as stress reliever, as it contains to many elements that can make things go wrong. Better stop at gambling being "just one of the ways to get entertained".

The psychological aspect is definitely important in gambling. Especially when I see some of the gamblers I know who don't think realistically. They choose gambling to make their dreams come true. Some of them think that they cannot get to that position without gambling platform. Gamblers who operate with this type of psychology fail to control themselves in gambling. At some point, they lose the wealth they have in their possession. Gambling can only be enjoyed by those who come out of the world of fantasy and control themselves in gambling.

When we get caught up trying to pigeonhole reality to fit linguistic definitions we can end up with weird conclusions.
The reality is the stress is not always bad, our bodies produce cortisol (the "stress hormone") for a reason. Also, stress and fun/entertainment/excitement are not to far away from each other and they're not opposites. The opposite of stress is relaxation, but that's not what people are seeking for when gambling.
-
It will lead to more stress if you lose, but in case that you play and win, then for sure, a lot of positive hormones are going to be released in our body and we feel good and think that gambling is a good way to relieved our mind and body of stress. But then again, that will not be always the case, most of the times we are going to lose specially if you play and have in mind that it's will be a stress reliever and nothing more. But if you think about the money that you are going to lose in the long run, then it might just add up to the negative feelings. So it's better to go to like exercise and meditation or hobbies to fight out that stress to maintain our mental health.

Just sharing my story here:
We had a drinking spree and when we got drunk we decided to go and play in a casino here. In the beginning I was able to win big already, but I didn't stop and then ended up losing all my money in the end.
Moral of the story is that our decision should be clear when we gamble, I mean if I haven't had the influence, I would have withdraw the money and go home right away. So it lead to more stress on my end when I wake up and realized what I have done. Ouch!!! :(

It will lead to more stress if you lose, but in case that you play and win, then for sure, a lot of positive hormones are going to be released in our body and we feel good and think that gambling is a good way to relieved our mind and body of stress. In gambling one is most delighted by the excitement created in a gambler when he wins. There may be less amount of money but that too can make a gambler happy. Those who gamble and loss even if it is a small amount, are found to suffer from it both mentally and physically. As a gambler I would say that gambling is not a problem if a gambler chooses gambling to lose. Better to enjoy this platform instead of expecting to win from gambling. Since winning is not always possible, it is important to develop the humanity to enjoy both victory and defeat.

It is always good to enjoy each gaming session we have, it is a fact that sometimes we get carried away by emotions and that can mean many good things, but also bad things when it is not taken responsibly, therefore every time we are going to have a gaming session we should think about how much we should spend and how we can enjoy or extend the experience more, and I think everything points to the fact that if we always consider gaming as the best way to have fun we must do it responsibly, for me that is the key.

As you mentioned, if a gambler believes he can win or lose, he will not panic no matter what happens. Most gamblers' reactions are a result of their expectations. When a gambler is confident that he will win but does not, he experiences intense feelings and may transfer his aggression to a close friend or family member.
However, if a gambler places a bet and believes that he will not win or that the money has already been lost prior to the start of the game, he will not be surprised or panicked if the game is lost.

Many people think gambling is fun way to spend time and maybe win some money. But it is not that simple. Gambling can help people feel better for short time but it can also cause more stress and worry. Some people use gambling to forget about their problems but gambling can also create new problems. We should be careful and notice when gambling stops being fun and starts causing trouble. Except of using gambling to deal with stress we should find healthier ways to manage our stress and worries. This way we can avoid bad things that can happen when we gamble too much.
And one more thing when we gamble to reduce stress and we gamble daily or too much so it will lead us to addiction. So if you will get be addicted one time so it will not be easy to leave so always be careful.

Yes I totally agree with you too. In fact, a different kind of excitement works among those who win at gambling, especially those who are new and win for the first time. When I gambled for the first time and won, I had a very happy moment, I remember when I won gambling for the first time I screamed so loud. As funny as it sounds, it was actually a lot more fun for me. It really gives a new gambler a different feel.

That readiness is what a gambler should have, when they enter gambling and they start betting on it, then they must be ready to lose money, otherwise it will have a negative impact on themselves or someone else will be affected by their anger.
It is better not to gamble if we are not ready to lose money, because we need to realize that defeat is much greater than victory.
