I have seen Cats, Frogs, Dogs dominate as a theme for many crypto projects especially for the Memecoins. And they're all thriving in the market. And many new ones that are claimed to be inspired by animals keep showing up and surprisingly becoming popular choices among communities and investors.
Maybe there is a secret I'm not aware of. In fact, catching up data from various crypto info sites, one Dog-theme Memecoins saw over 24 Billion in 24 hours trading volume. And some Cat-themed ones trending on crypto spaces.
I try to make sense of the whole thing that these animals are friends of humans, yes! But what I don't understand is the fusion of different animals into a project name. I have seen quite a number of them so far. Recently I found CatDog. I'll need your opinion about what you can think of these.
Could it be the fusion of the strength from both project communities or to depict some hybrid genetic stunts?

When you see projects title like "CatDog", "MoneyDog", "DogWifHat", "CatWifHat" etc, its nothing other than to kind of depict a hybrid genetic stunt (as you tagged it), or in other words, create some kind of imagination in the brains of people which possibly people should see or assume as funny.
And you should already know that meme coins is about fun (in it's character) and making money (in it's goal), so this is why we see that memecoins at times, tends to even do better than most good projects in terms of trading volume, people buy and hold major projects as an investment into the future, while most trade memecoins with a goal to make quick money.
I hope this is understandable enough.

Personally, I think a lot of the success with animal-themed memecoins like CatDog has to do with the sentimental value attached to these animal's traits like loyalty and agility.
Although there are cases where these meme coins offer very strong liquidity and zero transaction fees, making it appealing to new investors, and a good example is CatDog, currently trading on Bitget with very impressive liquidity.
Like you mentioned, the fusion of cat and dog themes is just basically an effort to unite fans of both animals and capture a wider audience, which is very important for meme projects.

At first I heard meme coins are community coins, where DOGE coin was created for the dog lover community... seeing DOGE's success, then came copies of coins for the dog community, SHIBA INU and so on... there are so many dog owners, maybe the real target of DOGE coin is those dog owners... then, there was another cat name trying to attract cat owners... WTF... this kind of pattern is actually boring, so I think tokens that copycat again have no place... unless they have a distinctive difference.

Doge is the face of meme coin so yeah, everything started with that and it become the poster for meme coins. And with that success, it's obvious that crypto investors might have love it and so it evolved, then it was followed by Shiba Inue and then others succeeded as well. So there is this community that slowly grow into a "culture". Maybe it's out of the creators imagination and humor and then they uses social media platform in driving it's popularity to crypto investors and to the masses.

I am not sure what really inspired these animal-themed memecoin projects but maybe since they saw the pioneering success of Dogecoin they realized that investors love the idea of associating with animals that is why many new projects are adopting the same idea. There can now be thousands of animal-named projects that are now dead and many more can be coming on the scene since maybe it is so easy to start a memecoin project without worrying the use-cases which can be dealt later. I am just wondering what can be next after this animal crazed thing in the memecoin market...maybe something that got to do with insects would be a good idea...what do you think?

this recent trend doesn’t even have original animal characters some of them are just straight up animals i can’t count on my hands anymore how many dogs and cats themed memecoins i have seen just scrolling around and a lot of them don’t really offer something unique but $dogs seems to be the most popular out of the new ones currently
