Marathon Digital Now Stamps All Bitcoin Mined In America as "Made in USA"

Marathon Digital Holdings has taken a patriotic step by labeling all Bitcoin mined in the U.S. with a "Made in USA" stamp.

Marathon Digital Holdings, a leading U.S.-based Bitcoin mining company, has announced that all Bitcoin blocks mined in America will now be stamped (https://mempool.space/block/00000000000000000000150d74a2716704eb115a0f6973780f838340f9e9ae50) with the label "Made in USA". The company declared (https://x.com/MarathonDH/status/1823038263961031075) on X, "MARA is Team USA, proudly declared in each American-made bitcoin block we mine.". I would guess their decision is influenced by US 2024 election. In other news (https://www.blockhead.co/2024/08/13/marathon-digital-to-raise-250m-to-buy-more-bitcoin/), they also plan to raise $250M in order to buy more Bitcoin. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

This is one of the drawbacks of the open market for Bitcoin mining, Marathon Digital is a very centralized company and tries to please the government even before they are asked to and they are committed to blacklists and willing to do anything for their PR campaign.

Nothing strange from a company that behaves as if it was designed by some government agency - first censoring transactions, and now they want to mark mined BTC as some kind of commodity that can then be sold at a premium price - because USA mined BTC should probably be worth more than Russia/ China mined BTC ::)

What's next - maybe they will ask the developers to create a mechanism that would enable them to always claim back the coins that they mined if they think that these same coins ended up in the "wrong" hands ???

I agree, although we shall see whether their action will be profitable in long term. I expect they'll be in tighter spot if either Kamala wins or Trump win, but doesn't fulfill cryptocurrency-related promise.

It wouldn't be surprising when there are already few mixer and seller claiming they would give "clean" Bitcoin directly from miner at premium price or high fee.

I didn't know about such options, mostly mixers say that coins come from various CEXs or they don't say anything specific about it. In any case, it seems that we are facing a very controversial time when Bitcoins could really be marked by the place of production or by who knows what other standards.

To be honest I don't really care about this. The coinbase message is just vanity data anyway, and it can literally contain any kind of text that the miner or mining pool wants. So if you're ruffling your feathers about this, it might make you feel better to know that most people cannot trace their UTXOs back to a particular coinbase reward.

I'm aware about difficulty of linking UTXO to coinbase reward. But this particular message could give more reason to treat each UTXO differently and drag Bitcoin further into US politics.

In recent months, Bitcoin has actually become much more exposed than ever to US politics and to some politicians only serve the purpose of trying to win as many voters as possible. It just creates some kind of impression that Bitcoin should succeed if candidate A wins, and experience some terrible fate if candidate B wins. Bitcoin should be above these cheap political fights, because in the end, whoever is in power, things will remain more or less the same.

On the other hand, we should be noting how Bitcoin - and the cryptocurrency industry for that matter - is now appearing in the pollical radar much more so in this election season. Instead of looking at it as something not good, this is actually a lot better for Bitcoin since this is free publicity all along...and I am sure many millions would be aware of Bitcoin all because we have two candidates who are vying the attention of the people who are into Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. Just forget the noise and see the benefits involved. Of course, after the election, things will get back to normal but I am sure there will be a good number of people who might be joining the Bitcoin party because of the free mileage given by both parties. Now, as to the Made in USA am sure it is just a branding kind of thing or even just a gimmick by Marathon Digital Holdings putting a little bit mix of excitement to what it is doing.

It may be a marketing ploy to raise $250 million, and it appears to be a wise one as it demonstrates their loyalty and patriotism to the nation and will help other US citizens respect them. Mara will be able to raise $250 million in this way to increase her Bitcoin investments.

This may not sit well with many miners, as concerns about respect may arise only on social media if they add to a block that was partially mined in another nation and then label it as belonging to the United States.

Neah, they just changed the text on their coinbase reward, they can't actually label every coin or satoshi unless they go the way of ordinals and inscribe every single one of them. This is just some PR bs they are doing for the elections, and it's one of the things that never ceases to amaze me, on how they act like they are so pro-crypto when every single one of their actions goes against the basic principles of cryptos.

You are right This is just a way to express their devotion towards their country, and who knows for what purpose they are showing their devotion, as there are many other ways to show it, like donating to US needy people and supporting the economy by means they can. They did this and made it public definitely indicates that they are trying to seek attention why?

If it's for funds then I don't really think they can raise funds just by this act and people don't really care about the country name written on the block they mine because if it's just a block they are mining they won't be mining them all but few only.

Because it's part of their PR or advertising, where this action sound more unique and more worthy to appear on news.

I think you forget about investor who is also either nationalistic or patriotic.

americans probably have the biggest unplaced patriotism i have ever seen they are super proud of being americans and they let that be known everywhere even if it doesn’t exactly bring them any benefits it is just all for bragging rights

it’s kind of a branding they want to stamp on to everything they make or take i don’t think it has any serious or deep meaning

They sort of aspire to trademark everything they create or take, and I am skeptical that it means anything profound or meaningful.

It doesn't. But then again when you're looking for a pool to mine or even just checking locks in an explorer, your most likely options are going to be a USA miner, a Siberian miner, or an outlaw Chinese miner.

We could've heard a mining pool a long time ago write made in China on their blocks, until China banned all the crypto mining there. So they all mostly went to the USA.

I got your point here, and there is no doubt that they seek attention and want to run ads of their country, haha and there is nothing bad in that either this way they have really made their country the central point of attraction I mean from every way they are making progress in terms of getting attention and they are almost known by every single adult person that there is a world with the name of USA.

Their dollar is the biggest factor that plays a big role. If the role of USD or relevant stable currencies in the crypto world comes to an end or is reduced, then they won't be a big central point of attraction and people won't be observing them.
