Title: Do any of you guys read the Bitcoin Devs newsletter?
Post by: NotATether on October 03, 2024, 02:15:14 PM
So in case you don't know, Bitcoin Core has a mailing list for Bitcoin developers to gather and talk about new ideas for Bitcoin. A sort of brainstorming thing or an incubator.

For those of you that do know about it, do you read the list? And how often? I will assume that most are not regular contributors, but have you ever wrote to the list before?

No. I never wrote anything and never read anything as well. But I have read some articles before from where I came to know that there are some mailing list. But, since I am not a developer and barely understand the technical part of Bitcoin, I never show any interest to read what is happening there and what is planning by other developers. But I would be glad if someone post some explanation regularly about the recent changes and what are likely to come and what is the benefit of that change. I said that because most average people like me won't understand the technical terms that the devs use on their mailing list. So, having a explanation thread will be a good idea. Previously, I saw a thread about the developers debating about Bitcoin testnet reset.

Previously, I occasionally followed a developer on Twitter, but over time I somehow forgot his account, and I did not add him to the favourites list. Although he only shared some general ideas there that he might be thinking about.
I will try to find it again, although it has been a long time.

Regarding Bitcoin core-related mailing lists, here are some related links that I know of:
- https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/bitcoin-core-dev (Bitcoin Core Announcements)
- https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/bitcoin-dev (Bitcoin Protocol Discussion)

I have read some of the archives contained in the third link but have never participated in the discussion and have not joined the mailing list.

FYI, they've moved from Linux Foundation mailing to Google Groups. You can see it on https://groups.google.com/g/bitcoindev (https://groups.google.com/g/bitcoindev).

Thank you for the information.
I read about the Google group link in your post discussing: "Future of testnet3 network" here:

I just found out that the Linux Foundation mailing list has moved to the Google Group. At first, I thought it was a discussion forum in addition to the existing mailing list discussion.

i do not read the list nor have i ever contributed to it before i respect and appreciate the devs’ hard work but i do not have enough knowledge to join in on their discussion i am aware that a lot of what they talk about can be of concern to us regular/average investors but i am sure it will be in forums (here or the other) if a topic is seriously being debated and thus needs the attention and opinion of even the regular investors

I always thought this is somewhat contraditory.

A bitcoin developers groups using a google product. They could use any other mailing list, why force everyone to create a google account to participate? I don't think privacy should be the  main focus of the group, but this looks a bit against the ethos of bitcoin. Dont you think?

Most of them perform under their real names, so I guess that's why they don't bother about privacy. Some of them perform at conferences and hold various presentations, privacy is certainly not important to them. Also, it seems that tools from the Google platform facilitate their organization.

It is not excluded that they have a more private way of communication between them, but if they talked about it, it would no longer be private.

I love listening to podcasts especially when I drive to work or sometimes in the evening, The Bitcoin Optech Podcast is one of the things on my podcast list. ---->https://open.spotify.com/show/5UnB50h4O1jKaq5AyfN9Qo

These days I follow political analysis more due to the developments in the Middle East but I do listen to Bitcoin Optech from time to time which is full of technical news related to Bitcoin Devs and discussions around it.

It's also worth to mention that discussion on both places can be seen by anyone. Although they could've chosen different option (groups.io or GitHub) which have less worse privacy practice.

Bitcoin Optech is also great source of news, although i only follow their website/newsletter? Do you know if there any difference between their newsletter and podcast?

I think being seen by anyone is not a problem. But Google logs everything , so they can basically know who has seen the discussions as well...

Looks more like an ethos problem for me

Seems like you haven't responded to any of the replies. As I proposed in my previous post, if you have enough time, create a thread and update us explaining what the devs are planning to do and what will be the benefit of those changes. As I said in my previous post, most of the average people like me do not understand technical terms. So, when we read technical articles or similar things, it gets harder for us to understand. So, I request you create a thread and post some important updates if possible. Let's see if anyone else are interested to know or it's just me.

No, I am not on the mailing list of Bitcoin developers and it can be because I am not a technically interested guy myself as reading their newsletter can make my brain go haywire and grasping for breathe (sorry for the exaggeration). Now, I am sure that it can be good to be updated on many developments happening on Bitcoin but maybe I prefer to read some sort of a summary dissecting game-changing updates that can impact me as a Bitcoin holder and crypto enthusiast. As the leading and evolving platform, Bitcoin remains to be on top of things and still has the excitement and the energy as we move on to a new year.

I'm aware of it and I do read it from time to time. But to be a contributor? Nah, it's too much technical aspects and it's going to be very hard to understand it at my point of view.

Last time I read about the vulnerabilities affect versions of Bitcoin Core before (and not including) 25.0.

So for sure there will be another released in the future to cover this one.

And today i found news which state Linux Foundation mailing[1] is dead, where all (not only Bitcoin mailing) past discussion removed. Although some people have made backup/archive which can be accessed publicly[2] .

This is my first time of hearing of a mailing list for bitcoin developers. I think this will interest more the guys that are technically inclined and know more about the technical aspect of bitcoin itself. I am sure only few knows about this because the larger community of bitcoin adopters are not technically oriented and are just into the technology because of the opportunities it renders; decentralization, privacy and security concerns of their assets by themselves. It will be great to brainstorm there but only if you’re technically knowledgeable.

The mailing list used by Bitcoin Developer has been around for around 15 years.
And now it's switched from Linux to Google (https://groups.google.com/group/bitcoindev (https://groups.google.com/group/bitcoindev))

You can get several archives of the cryptography mailing list used by Satoshi, including here:
