Title: Are ordinals still a thing?
Post by: XFinite on October 09, 2024, 12:39:58 PM
I remember that there was massive hype on meme coins in BRC20 projects, like ORDI and more, but I also just realized they are not really showing up anymore on my timeline since it's been months. So what's the current state of Ordinals now?

if some of you don't know what Ordinals is, it's basically designed to inscribe data onto individual satoshis, you can add things like images, text or even audio files directly to the bitcoin blockchain. Pretty cool technology imo, but I saw some guys really hated the concept, is this because it's spamming the network? I believe anything new is a good addition to crypto space.

I do not see it much anymore, but I know that it is continuing. However, its effect on the blockchain isn't fully in effect anymore, and the hype of the project is not the same anymore.

It is a cool technology and further developments could still be done.

I remember this wave of BTC ecosystem, runes, brc20 network brought about ordinals, sats, rats and so many more projects. But the hype died down though. Probably with the attention on Oglong launchpad on runes, we might see some of the brc20, runes, cats projects spring up..

it’s still there

i still see a marketplace for it so i wouldn’t exactly say it’s dead but i guess it did not exactly create the hype everyone thought it would and now like you and many others they do not hear of ordinals as much anymore maybe there is just a smaller more niche community that still holds on to ordinals but as far as i know not a lot of people really cares anymore i also don’t see that much development news

There is an in-depth discussion on this topic in BTT titled ----> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5452159.msg62220417#msg62220417 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5452159.msg62220417#msg62220417)
In short, ordinals do not serve the primary purpose for which Bitcoin was designed, which is a peer-to-peer payment method.

Still there, still being minted, still being moved and traded and sold
https://ordiscan.com/blocks

Also despite losing a lot of its momentum $ORDI for example still has 3 times the marketcap of Hamster Kombat, if we go on and compare coins that are nothing but hype, so none of this will go away that easily!

For BRC-20, you could start by looking at this page https://www.coingecko.com/en/categories/brc-20 (https://www.coingecko.com/en/categories/brc-20),

Pretty cool technology imo, but I saw some guys really hated the concept, is this because it's spamming the network? I believe anything new is a good addition to crypto space.

Most people used it to either spam the network and blockchain with garbage or non-valuable data. It also drive TX fee rate if you want your Bitcoin TX confirmed without taking too much time.
