Title: I want to add 2Fa to my Account.
Post by: Agbe on October 11, 2024, 05:11:58 PM
Is it possible for me to add 2fa (2-Factor Authenticator) to my account so that I can make extra security for my account? And if it is possible I will like the admin ot anyone who knows were to set up the 2FA to show me. I have checked if I can see it at the profile setting but I could not and that's is why I am bringing it to the public. If the feature is there please show me and if it is not there, no problem. Thanks.

You can not add 2FA. This forum does not support it. If you want to have extra security to your account, you can stake your bitcoin address or altcoins address somewhere on this forum. Use a strong password.

It would be good if this forum supports 2FA.

The forum currently doesn't support Two - factor authentication. It's quite easy to confirm if it does or not. And to do that you don't really have to go through the stress of going through your profile settings in search of a  two factor authentication checkbox to turn on.
When you try logging in to the forum the login page only has a space for password and your username then a checkbox  for how long you want to stay logged in. If admin added a  two factor authentication it will display on the login page regardless if you have setup yours or not.

I sure you must have noticed similar thing before Theymos added a 2FA feature on bitcoin talk

A good alternative while 2fa is not implemented is to use the topic Stake your address.

When you post your address and sign a message with it, you are showing a cryptography proof that you own that account.

If someone hacks you, you can just sign the message again proving that you are the original owner.

I dont think here on the forum, such has been in use, however, i will advise that you follow the advise given by bitmover in staking your address here, with that, no one can have access to claim your account except they were able to proof its ownership through the address used by you, they will have to sign a message, then in other to make yourself more safe, avoid anything that will compromise your account from within and outside the forum.

Okay thanks for the alternative solution for the second security of an account. I will do that now to protect the account. And I think the signing of message can only be done in laptop and not in mobile phone? And if is only in laptop then I can't do it now because my laptop has an issue to fixed and the fault can't be fixed in my local repairers so they have to send for the part outside state to waybill it to them before fixing the problem. Therefore I have to wait. _act_ thanks too.

You can sign a message using a mobile wallet too.

I recommend that you use coinomi. They are back to make updates, it is a multicurrency wallet but the bitcoin implementation is very good.

I will also add that you have to save the backup  of your seed phrase, in case you lose your phone  (even if you don't have money there, because you need the private keys to sign a message and prove that you own the account)

If I remember it correctly, you can also use BlueWallet to sign/verify a message on your phone. It's not that difficult since the option is quite easy to find (at least that was the case when I tried the app). Alternatively, I recall seeing somebody recommend Electrum to do the same thing. Both of them are open source so you can build the app on your own if you want to. CMIIW.

it seems like this is a code from the OP to include 2fa feature in the upcoming update list for this forum... lol.. but this suggestion is also good, because 2fa means a better layer of security...

we all know that the existence of the menu in this forum is not difficult, and even if you really look for 2fa it must be in the login settings, right? and when it is not found, it means the feature does not exist

we are all very familiar with 2fa, and if you do not find it in the security settings, it means it does not exist

Indeed, there is no and it is not yet available, the use of 2FA also provides more security.
But in addition to 2FA, it is also important to use CAPTCHAs to avoid bot logins that can happen.

Because the next forum has also used CAPTCHA for a better level of security.

Bot attacks and 2FA attacks are quite different by nature. Unlike most 2FA applications, a user cannot opt out of CAPTCHA. It can also get annoying to access the forum with ToR if CAPTCHA is turned on. I guess it can be a decent option if the forum gets flooded with traffic and distinguishing legitimate users from botnet is much more difficult. CMIIW.

op, use a password manager to ensure that you don’t forget or lose your passwords especially you are going to need to use a strong or something unique to make sure no one can easily access your account we also click on a lot of links in this forum when interacting (whether it is to verify news or check out a platform) so make sure your software is updated and has strong security features beware of phishing and avoid interacting with spam messages

Admin has made a thread  in our local asking about improvements and any features of the forum that needs to be done and I think this is a good suggestion and soon this thread he'll see it. And wait until he makes some adjustment and updates about having a 2FA feature for our accounts.

I actually remember that I opened my first topic in this forum with this request for adding two factor authentication. However, many reputable members expressed their opinion that it was a very early request, but I have not seen anyone disagree. - https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=314570.msg1461114#msg1461114
Now, it has been more than 10 months since that request, but I have not seen any activity on the altcointalk forum regarding the two factor authentication implementation, so Still we can't use or add two factor authentication to this altcointalk forum account.

At least there is special security so that the forum cannot be abused.
Bitcointalk forums have also been implementing CAPTCHAs for a long time because they are aware that the use of Bots to penetrate or anything else is done by rogue users.

Now Altcointalk is becoming popular and requires a door that is given additional security and of course there are some rules that need to be implemented, to increase the layered security.

Thank you for presenting a good topic. I have thought about this a few times because if 2fa security is enabled then we can be more secure with our account. Besides, the problem of hacking comes in its own random situation because when we tell our password and gmail information to people around, they will try to hack it. I keep everything neat on my account to keep myself calm

Thanks for mentioning this method too It might come in handy in the future although I still have not staked my address as I think if my address is gone and I won't be able to identify that the account is mine then I am rekt and the account will be useless as there been cases on BTT that the owner failed to verify he is the owner of the account and get negative tags.

I hope the admin will also integrate a 2FA method in this forum so we could actually use the real 2FA system in place. And I think OP might recover our accounts if get lost or if he can't he should add a special donation or some kind of badge that whoever will have that badge can recover his account if lost by proving or maybe those who have done KYC can recover their accounts easily if lost.

I believe this means the system works properly. If you're planning to stake an address you'll need to make sure you back it up properly. Not doing so would be a terrible idea. I believe people who learn about sign messages etc should be prepared for that because the community definitely will never believe he simply "lost it". I believe the same applies to 2FA too, no backup and if your device is lost then it's impossible to verify if you're still the real owner of the account or not from the community perspective. CMIIW.

It also means if someone gets their hands on my wallet and they can verify from their side that they own the account while I have lost it and they will be using it pretending to me, then what? I think every system has faults, so its the responsibility of the owner of the account to take extra precautions to protect the account.

2FA is good, like signing tx, etc. but the admin of the forum must also integrate the same security measures which will indicate that the admin is serious about the security of their forum's users which he is (IMO) so soon we might see one.

We should hope that with time things will keep getting better and we found out that 2FA has been enabled on this forum as well, because it secures for more advance security measures over ones account, whereby it cannot be easily placed under attack by any third party unless they take hold of everything that pertains us, if they scale through the fist stage, the second one will bounce them back and the access will be denied except they make provision for that as well.

Upon the present president of the captcha in bitcointalk forum, robots are still there and I don't know how they managed to register in the forum. I have seen many of them applying to all the bounties campaigns in the altcoins board over there both the once that that only for Sr. Members and above or when the campaign is written CFNP, they still apply. And really I don't know how those machines got into that forum.

Using 2FA is good for securing an account for sudden attacks from unknown sources.

Bots that are programmed with certain parameters to be able to register and post. It is only necessary to know what requirements the forum asks for in order to meet them and then connect the bot as many times as necessary to create multiple accounts, it is something that has been done for many years, especially in old versions of SMF. Changing the default settings is something that always helps a little, but it is not 100% effective.

I have a bot in both forums.

In bitcointalk it is possible to bypass captcha entirely using an specific URL to login.

To login here as a bot, you just need to pass a few parameters in the request.

2024 is ending but they still didn't add 2FA? No wonder I thought, something is missing. Even Bitcointalk has 2FA now. I don't think 2FA will cost them anything. They could just add this feature just as it was added in Bitcointalk. An extra layer of security! Who doesn't want that! Attacks are getting more frequent these days, people are loosing their accounts, their privacy. So it is high time, 2FA was implemented in Altcoinstalk.

It is not about something that costs money, but about the problems that may arise in the forum after its implementation. It must be taken into account that any change in the forum configuration can cause the database to have problems if many tests have not been previously carried out over a certain period of time to ensure its correct functioning.

Also, the administrator has a pretty long list of things to do on the forum, so we have to be patient.

Well, in that case, we can always stick to the old classic method, "Staked Bitcoin Address". Although I haven't staked my address here on Alttalk, it is staked on BTT. Do you think I also need to stake my address here? Since I'm a teleported account, everything is connected, which is why I don't think it's necessary. Anyway, an extra layer of security would have been better (personal opinion).

You can stake your Bitcoin address in this thread: ✅ Stake your Bitcoin address (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=321705.0).

Although it can also be done with other wallets and coins.

I think it's always good for security to have another layer like this and it's also good for less experienced users who don't yet know what that feature is for. My personal opinion coincides 100% with yours.

No, that list is not publicly available, at least that I remember. There are only some "specific things" that the administrator has once said, but nothing official.

Ofc it has a cost, and a high cost

Development is something very expensive. It takes time to made a decent implementation, and time of an experienced developer is expensive.

The 2FA feature is not a default SMF feature, so it can be easily activated or deactivated by the admin. Therefore, if you want to implement 2FA on this forum, you need to modify it. For this, you need to hire an expert in this field. Of course, it costs money unless the person makes it free.

Even though your account at Altcoinstalks is a teleport account, it does not rule out the possibility that it will be hacked, even though your account at Bitcointalk is still safe.

There's nothing wrong with staking a Bitcoin address here using the same or different address as the one you posted on Bitcointalk.

I have not seen any discrimination here for both the original sign up users and teleported users in this forum. In fact the benefits the teleported users have gotten in this forum is much more numerous. Go to Moderators, they are there, senate in the forum there are there and good posters in the forum we are here. So we are all the spheres of the forum.

And when we come to the adding of the 2fa feature in the forum and I think that is one of the best to do before it is too late for many people accounts to be at risk.

I don't know whether the admin has any plans to add a 2FA feature to Altcoinstalks or not. However, instead of expecting something that is not certain when it will be implemented in the forum, we can start with each of us to implement several things such as:

- Use an account password that is not easy to guess, such as 12345, etc.
- Do not use the same email and password as accounts on other websites.
- In the forum, you can use the Bitcoin address sign message or other types of sign messages, such as PGP sign messages, to prove account ownership.
