This question do prick me, recently I do wonder the main essence of ICO because there are often times where this is just used for scamming, based on this report:
At Least 12 Solana Meme Coin Abandoned in Just One Month
On Monday, April 21, ZachXBT, a well-known blockchain investigator, uncovered that at least 12 meme coin projects on Solana were abandoned over the past month. These projects cumulatively raised about $26.7 million from investors before developers took off with the money.
We know there are other blockchain used aside the Solana blockchain, that's the overall scam rate will be higher than this monthly.
Questions
What are the need for ICO?
Also, why are there tendency for the price to be lower than the presale?

What are the need for ICO?
If you check the price history of some solana tokens, you will understand. The one I could remember are WIF, Bonk and Bome. Also is Popcat. Also are the recent ones like Goat and Grass. These coins so much increased in price before dumping. Some like Popcat got to ATH many times like even recently. Goat and Grass was listed recently. Goat pumped 10 times before dumping. Grass has not dumped yet but with little pump yet.
So people wants to use it to make money.
Also, why are there tendency for the price to be lower than the presale?
It is very possible but some increased in price and people make money. What I can just say is that people should use the money that they can afford to lose on these coins. They can buy it when the token already has been listed on an exchange.
Solana memes are what that is the talk among people when talking about meme coins, definitely scammers will go there to scam.
Be careful of the bear market. These coins will dump far further.

Investment fund for the project they were working that can be shown in the project roads map. And the price, that depends on different factors like the number of initial investors, number of tokens created, etc. Idk why still ask about ICO but this is mostly available data in google.

Questions
What are the need for ICO?
Also, why are there tendency for the price to be lower than the presale?
The main purpose of launching an ICO for the project is to gather funds so that the company will have something to use to develop their project. In short terms, you as an investor will give some money to the company in exchange of their native token. You are the one risking it all because the token doesn't have any value at that time while you're giving away your money already.
As for the 2nd question, it can go both ways depending on the project, but most of the time, the price tends to go lower than the presale. TBH, I didn't expect that ICOs are still being used to get some funds for the project because the last time that this has been used was in 2017-2018 when it's on hype.
-
Questions
What are the need for ICO?
it is for promoting the project to accumulate investors and potentially funds as well for development of the project it also helps to build community even before it launches which allows for higher chances of the project to be successful once it eventually launches
its purpose is not to scam however some people have taken advantage of the system to take people’s money
Also, why are there tendency for the price to be lower than the presale?
the hype sometimes only occurs during presale because of speculation then the interest dwindles down as it is launched
-
If you want to know about ICO then directly collect data from google, even you will understand by reading some articles from this forum. When the main objective of launching a project is to collect funds, it means creating an investment community. So that they can manage the development activities of that project in the future with this fund. You once again reminded that almost all ico projects were successful in 2017. But nowadays people put it in the scam bank. Again, after the ico hype was over, the ieo, ido trend came where many projects were successful in the beginning. Currently the most popular is telegram tap gaming and many bad projects are getting success by using this hype.
-
Now it may not be popular Projects that are still hosting ICOs and that was only happening in the past when memecoins were not as aggressive as they are now.
ICOs were a popular token sale event at the time and I even got a whitelist for some projects and some were very successful and some didn't get any returns.
When the ICO price is very cheap even below the presale price, those who enter at the low price are those who are still in private sale or only for certain people with special requirements such as capital groups that have a lot of money to support the project
It is already a common practice in ICOs and of course there are some rules about distribution and how long it will be locked or divided in the form of vesting.

Questions
What are the need for ICO?
Also, why are there tendency for the price to be lower than the presale?
1. Genuine projects do ICOs to raise funds. Ethereum is most successful ICO project till date.
2. I guess it is due to the fact that people have lost faith in ICOs. Back in 2017-'18, people would pay much more than ICO price, not that projects were any good, it's just that ICOs had hype back then.
-
Do meme tokens really do ICO, though? At the very least, I remember projects wrote a whitepaper and had a sale window when they were doing an ICO and printing the token after the money was collected. Based on what I see so far, most meme tokens already print their supply and rely on social media or hype to encourage people to buy their supply. It doesn't help that some people like to overhype them, going as far as saying meme tokens are better than Bitcoin for the future. They buy PR news on many websites too. CMIIW.
-
To raise money for the said project, however, in the last 4-5 years, there have been a lot of rug pulling from a lot of projects and it continue up to his day. And unfortunately, there are still individuals who blindly invest on such scam projects, thus, losing big money.
As what we have said, crypto is like a wild wild west, to each it's own. So it's better to look after yourself. And if you are going to invest then you should treat your money as if you have lose it already.
-
First I would like to say what's ICO which is Intial Coin Offering just same as IPO in stock market just to raise funds from the investors and to build a community support for the project to grow further by pitching their utility and Roadmap.
Which was popular until 2018 and after that almost 99.9% ICOs are meant for scam.
-
ICO has nothing to do with the developer who ran away... maybe what you mean is the MEME token sale period when it was first released to get investors...
During the new token sale period, developers usually need some funding to continue the project. The investment model in cryptocurrency is known to be very free, so we can buy in any amount we want. So the main point of ICO is funding.
For memecoin scams, it has happened many times, when developers get money, they run away... this type of scam is actually not new anymore.. but maybe it just surprised you now. And it is also important to note that currently the ICO funding method is no longer very popular.

Questions
What are the need for ICO?
It's one of many ways to raise money. ICO usually release whitepaper or statement which describe how will they use the received money. But obviously you need to trust them not to misusing the money.
Also, why are there tendency for the price to be lower than the presale?
I agree with other member about reduction of the hype or anticipation. Although on some cases, i believe some ICO overestimate value of their coin or token.

I think this is because all they want is the money, no matter the utility of the tokens, the dev teams often have to think of the profit at first.
Blockchain advancement has not been on the right track and will likely decline because of this because many thinks of it as a way making profits and not really solving any real world problems. Becoming creative just to make the next big coin or token and then after getting their money there's little to nothing in their mind than to think of another way for more profits and get bigger investors.

Which was popular until 2018 and after that almost 99.9% ICOs are meant for scam.
It was popular later on as well, its just that it kept changing names.
After ICO we got STO (when security tokens got more popular) and after that we got IDO (Initial Dex Offerings) which was popular until recently, but with alts still underperforming they are nowhere as popular as they used to be few years ago, back in 2021.

Also it came in the name of IEO (Initial Exchange Offering) which was pretty big after ICO era but I don't think any of them were popular or consider even in 2024.
Also myself never fan of these presale tokens because those are only created with the intention of dumping even by the devs once it reaches the marketplace so it's a big gamble always to invest.

Ah yes you are right, I completely forgot about IEOs. I think I even joined few of those on Binance as at one point I had some BNB so why not joining. ;)

I know some people that made nice amount of money by investing in private sales, meaning getting tokens at the huge discount and then immediuately dumping on the suckers who buy them when listed.

Questions

ICO are good for real tokens but ICOs of meme coins are not needed and that's the only reason for me to avoid meme coins because there is no guarantee of the team and a meme coin have no use case. Investors have been following a way to buy meme coins and other coins in cheap via these ICOs.
That's why they join ICOs but if 12 of them have rugpulled then investors should now think about it before investing again. ICOs offer higher prices than the private sales those who have missed the private sales can buy the tokens in ICOs.

Well, besides the ICO period is over, so let it be now with the current process and hype. And now, meme coins have their own follow-up, with mini games like this, with their respective TGEs, and their listing process, from there people can take advantage of their potential to make profits. although this is indeed higher risk because of FOMO and also the process of increasing and dropping prices which are very drastic and fast. But let meme coins be with what is happening now, because the era continues to change and maybe in the future it will change again.

ICO was very popular in the past, it is a fundraising scheme for projects to raise capital, some people were lucky to make money from ICO's, later turned IEO, IDO, etc, but most were scammed and lost a lot of money. Meme coins era is not going to exist for long time everything will come to an end if we observe the history meme coin era is permanent to come but not permanent to stay forever. Sometimes it comes after the BTC bullish season or sometimes before it this time it comes in the BTC season few months ago the hype of meme coins was crazy.
The hype is still increasing and investors of meme coins are unnaturally making millions in profit at the same time others are losing too. Anyway we should not trade in meme coin in FOMO that's dangerous for the capital.

There will definitely be an era and one day it will pass and be replaced by another. It's just that I don't know when, maybe the next phase or after that, waiting for something new and more hype. The point is for now, meme coins are still very hype so we take advantage of this opportunity to get more money from here. In the news, it is clearly written that the ICO on the Solana coin is a Meme coin. As far as I know, the Meme coin was created just for fun and has no concrete purpose. What makes the price of the Meme coin go up and down is the community that they think is just for fun, and not for seriousness.
We know there are other blockchain used aside the Solana blockchain, that's the overall scam rate will be higher than this monthly.
Questions
What are the need for ICO?
Also, why are there tendency for the price to be lower than the presale?
As far as I know, ICO is Initial Coin Offering, those who have expertise in coin-making technology and blockchain experts offer their projects to the public but they do not have the funds to develop the coin project, so an ICO was created for fundraising.
As far as I know, the Ethereum coin that is ranked 2nd on Coinmarketcap now was previously an ICO coin because the core team of Ethereum at that time (maybe) did not have enough funds to develop Ethereum.
Ethereum was also originally funded through an ICO, which took place in 2014. Buyers received ether (ETH) in exchange for bitcoin, and more than 7 million ether was sold in the first 12 hours of the sale, worth approximately $2.2 million

What are the need for ICO? Also, why are there tendency for the price to be lower than the presale?
As for me, the main reason why ICO is made is to gather as much money and support as possible for the project and in return you will get the coins or tokens of the project. Yes, MONEY and MONEY and this is also the reason why ICO had become like the go-to paradise for many scammers in the past...and unfortunately even until today but I think they are not anymore using the ICO term like before as it is already a tainted one. As to why the price of the coins or tokens will be so lower once they can be brought into exchanges compared to the presale level, it can because the project is really NOTHING meaning there is actually no value it is bringing, among other factors, of course.

This is the thing we are majorly concerned with the money we make and same as the dev team, only few is concerned with real world problems and the advancement of cryptography. Creating one of these meme coins are pretty much easy, just get good marketing to follow the hype, your coin is trending already.
Like you said more hype will show forth, just like how the Ordinals where trending last year but now Telegram airdrop. More hype will show forth, which might just be a rebranding after all this was not the first year we were in the Telegram airdrop frenzy, remember 2020 in telegram where we did some click bot task to earn coins like TRX, LTC and others. There will always be innovation to earn money from these dev.

Yes, and this is one of the fields for people who are able to take advantage of all eras to earn income from there. Developers will definitely create new projects according to the hype, even without caring about the future of the projects they create, although there are indeed some devs who remain trusted to develop projects continuously.
and other parties take advantage by taking advantage of pump and dump opportunities, as long as the project is hype, whatever it is, the goal is certainly to reap high profits. and other parties can also benefit from several programs and other activities related to the era.
however, there will definitely be some who cannot follow and end up losing a lot of money in every era that happens. yes because of unpreparedness in that era, unpreparedness in terms of knowledge, psychology, emotions, and also the maturity of the plan. and greed that often causes ignorance to be more vigilant.

Meme coins are risky and they are highly volatile making money from them is very hard for a newbie they can only make money from them by taking other's calls. By following others they can learn too but this learning is also very risky and not a good way instead a mentor or a teacher can teach a newbie about meme coin the best.
For example DOGE meme coin which stands for Department of Government Efficient which will be given to Elon Musk and this meme coin pumped when listed. This kind of analysis is good and manipulation can't cause loss to a newbie too if they take the profit and exit the trade soon.

What are the need for ICO?
ICO full form Initial Coin Offering now that does mean you are offering to the people the coin you have launched for selling for example you are running a company and there you want to sell some share of your company so that you are showing you company share in the public with the detail and the possibility of your company same for the crypto newly lauched project. So that it is the important think to need
Also, why are there a tendency for the price to be lower than the presale?
When a coin in presale it was not in the public trading platform so it was not in the real market and when it comes to the real market all goes down except the real projects.

Its abbreviation made it all, well defined, initial coin offering, this is just an avenue for some potential investors to have an earlier opportunity of making investment on a particular coin before it rises or get launched, there is no scam intention for doing this, however, before we can go for anyone of such, we have to make research on the developers, if they can be trusted to deliver and maintain their words or not, right before we proceeds to making an investment.

ICO stands for Initial coin offerings means it's just a way to release some of the tokens into the market for the investors and this is a good way too to increase the liquidity like many tokens had their ICO on pinksale and as far as I know ETH also had it's ICO and according to Google that time it secured almost $18 millions in funding.
ICO are not bad, there are many people think most of the projects which chose ICO as their token release or in their tokenomics those projects are flop, yeah that's true to some extent but ICO are just underrated now due to IEO and some other ways but all just a way to release tokens into market and getting liqudity.

To be honest ICO deserves to be underrated from the fact that it has turn to a scope for scammers to often get victims. The IEO and others are they really important, what is the need for all this fundraising since they can also try to market their coins without this. Although it may not get the popularity they wants but with time a good coin will still attract the eyes of big investors.

ICO was very popular in the past, it is a fundraising scheme for projects to raise capital, some people were lucky to make money from ICO's, later turned IEO, IDO, etc, but most were scammed and lost a lot of money. The truth is that many big investors have lost money because someone bought tokens here in ICO and IEO and those people later did not list the coins on the exchange. If that person faced complete loss then the project was useless, these projects are usually the most trusted by the team management because if they were listed on good exchanges then investors would get good feedback and would show interest in investing in unique projects.

It's really crazy considering that when ICO was very trendy, this was a very big scam group. There were so many new projects popping up and using the ICO concept to do fundraising. But unfortunately, only a small percentage of projects are really serious about developing their projects, to the point of really distributing their tokens, listing them on top exchanges, and still developing their projects so that they can survive in various crypto market conditions.
However, as we know, on the other hand, there are many scam projects with ICOs, with the frills of having reached the hard-cap, but then immediately disappearing. Moreover, at that time, ICOs required KYC which actually had many cases of selling KYC data, not only that, many developer projects only did fundraising but did not list their coins even to this day. and did not return the money to their investors. Ah, never mind, what's worse is that in the past, there were many platforms that appeared that claimed to be platforms that provided value to ICO projects, and the plot twist was that they could be paid easily so that the project's rate would be good.
-

Going back into those old days when ICO is the mainstream or trend, ETH and BNB ICO wayback on which i do have that huge regret that i havent been able to get in with those times.
Its true that not all projects do really ends up on success and tons of investors had lost up millions but of course when it comes into this aspect on which there's no way that you could really be able to make money if you wont really be making up some risks on taking up on ICO's. We do know that this is the earliest and cheapest price that you could really be able to get into.
If it turned out to be that having that pump because of demand and some hype then that would really be that a good advantage.
-
Even since 2016, ICO also has a small project success rate... maybe it's true, we see project launchers get big fundraising when the new token sale period, but the execution of the existing project always seems flawed and ends in the death of the related project... maybe only 1 out of 10 projects seem to be able to survive when ICO was popular in 2016...
For now, ICO has really been abandoned, and meme coin investors are currently more focused on lucky schemes that hope for memecoin with small investments but hope for profits of up to 1000%... and the fundraising method is no longer called ICO you will hear a different term by utilizing the exchange platform,
-
I think ICOs were initially designed to provide a new way for some blockchain projects to raise funds from a global pool of investors actually the main needs for ICOs are fundraisin and community building. However, the ICO model has been kind of exploited by scammers, which has lead to market volatility and investor losses.
In order to cover up risks investors should conduct thorough research, evaluate whitepapers and check regulatory compliance. As an investor in projects like this you need to be cautious of unrealistic promises and also monitor project progress.

ICO are opportunities laid down for investors to make decision and select a coin to invest in right before they are being launched, this will help them to buy it at a cheaper rate, hold and wait till its being launched, then we deduct form the listing price from our investment price and also the possible pump in it after the listing, then take out our profits or leave it to remain as we may want it.

In current era, it's not that hard for all the new crypto projects to get some seed funding I can be wrong as I never started a project or made efforts to get funds and I know one always finds other's work more easy hehe so I said it because I have seen many projects not so good but still are getting 4$ million to 10 million funding.
IEO is hard for such projects as they have to get their project enlist in exchanges seed round or whatever they name them so when one or few of them will win the exchange will list their lapools, launchpads or IEO.
ICO are really a hub for spamming and rug pulling and now mostly abandoned by investors as well.
-
There are many people who are experts in cryptocurrency but they do not have the funds to create a cryptocurrency-based coin so they create an ICO. Maybe in my personal opinion, ICO will continue to exist, it's just that the path is different and in the end it is still fundraising for a cryptocurrency project.
As far as I know, Ethereum, which is the 2nd ranked coin on Coinmarketcap until now, is also a coin that is the result of an ICO. That proves that from the past until now, ICOs are needed, although sometimes I see many ICOs that are scams.

I saw this information on ByBit's main website and there it provides information about ICO and gives names like Launchpad and Launchpool.
Seeing the ICO that is present on ByBit proves that the crypto market still needs ICOs, I think the owner of this crypto project lacks funds so he has to use the ICO procedure. This is only my opinion.
