I don't know if it was explained before, but I couldn't find the answer.
What is the purpose of the HashTags option in the menu?
Now when I open that page I see a few of the same posts repeated many times. It doesn't seem particularly useful to me, I suppose it was perhaps intended as some kind of aid for SE searches, although I'm not sure how useful it is.

Yeah you do have a point. I've been on this forum for quite a while but still I've not been able to casually find out the importance of the hashtags button on the menu tab. Anyways when I first say this post I thought it was the link tag similar to bitcoin talk you were probably referring to but it isn't.
My best guess so far is that it actually like groups all posts that have a valid hash tag arranging them from the most recent to the least recent ones. Because of everyone of them I opened had a hash tag link.

I just noticed this lol.
I checked at least 5 of the threads/reply and it looks like Twitter (X) or any social media hashtags detected and sorted in dates (new posts). The purpose? Idk, it will be much better it could be sorted as "trending" or the more detected count hashtags on top on particular date range instead of this default sorting.

Hashtags are no longer useful on most platforms. Even Elon Musk hinted that they might remove hashtags from the X platform entirely, because it's mostly only used for spam. There is very little organic engagement from hashtags nowadays. We're no longer in 2014 where you could post a hashtag and it would actually go viral - their algorithm hides those kind of posts nowadays.
And I see similarities on this platform where nobody uses hashtags except for marketing managers..
