OP means the original poster, If we say it more easily, it refers to the topic owner.
Recently I saw this topic in a thread (https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=327491.msg1702772#msg1702772)by one of our local members and remembered that it was recently added to Bitcoin Talk, using the (op) tag to easily identify the topic owner.
Even it's not that important, but I think it should be kept in the queue for future updates to this forum. As sometimes we takes time to identify the topic owner :D

It can be quite handly to follow up the discussions from the creator, not sure how much works needs to be done to implement the change but it can be on the future to do list.
OP was not available in bitcointalk since the beginning, it's implemented very recently too probably a couple of years back.

I had suggested the (OP) for a very long time here, it was accepted by everyone but they also agree that it's not on the higher priority yet.
It is also correct that the feature was not in Bitcointalk from the beginning, it was a user called PowerGlove who wrote the script and theymos did approve it.

Generally this makes sense I think. At least for some threads it's useful, even if for others it's not that relevant, overall the benefits outweight the negatives of having to spend time implementing such an update ;)
