Title: Bitcoin Height 20000 ?
Post by: Honza on January 22, 2025, 07:25:53 PM
I came across this documentary:

github.com/Huber773/bitcoin

If you look in explorer and examine this you will see that the chain has a block height of ~20000, if I recognize this correctly?

What is that?

What is so special about block height 20,000? If you look at any explorer, it's just some block that was mined in July 2009, and has no transactions inside it except for the guy who caught it with his CPU miner at the time. Maybe it goes to one of Satoshi's addresses or something. But in any case, the current block height is over 800,000 blocks as of 2025.

Didn't see anything special in said height.
Can you elaborate, OP?
Maybe you did find something odd about it yourself..

NotATether is right I looked up the block height and I couldn't find anything particularly special about it. Given the fact that it's far from our current block height of about 800k+ , there's a high chance you will have more transactions of legacy addresses there that in regular blocks these days.

Blocks that are commonly termed special are usually blocks of halving one that I can very much point out is block 840,000 which is basically the last most recent halving block. People used unreasonable fees just to make sure their transactions were recorded in that block and in the end the congestion was something else with fees of over 1000sats/bytes.

That block explorer is not syncing with other nodes, that's why it is stuck there, or if it ain't stuck it's not catching up either.
Block height is 880533 as I type now.

As for what it is, it's just the number of blocks that have been added to the blockchain.

No, this explorer is not stuck, you can easily determine this by comparing the hash values, only the genesis block is the same. This chain and the network moves as a parallel in the mainnet and has been restarted, as far as I can see.

I don't really understand the whole thing yet, but I have compiled Bitcoin Core according to this documentation, am already connected to the network and have mined 15 blocks so far, which corresponds to 750BTC or is this now an error in the matrix?

From the looks it can be a testing repository to test how actually BTC works I can be wrong because I am not an expert in this matter but this is what I understand. Block 20000 was made back in the early days when BTC was new and now the current block number is 880478

Why are you so concerned about this, and how did you end up on this repository? What do you mean if you recognize it correctly? Are you pointing towards some event?

This is Mainnet, you can see how these nodes move in parallel and independently and how their number increases.

It's not specifically about block 20000, but if we look at this block in the network, it was mined just 3 days ago. The current block height is 20937.

My problem is that I don't understand this, I mined Bitcoin?

It's mainnet, but for altcoin where it uses forked Bitcoin Core source code. The GitHub ask you to replace several files, which makes you use altcoin network instead. Why don't you try visit block explorer for Bitcoin such as https://bitcoinexplorer.org/ (https://bitcoinexplorer.org/) or https://mempool.space/ (https://mempool.space/)?

But in the original repository, the hardcoded seeds and the hardcoded hash values are also regularly adjusted or “forked” as you call it in that case, so what exactly is the difference? Because nothing else was done there.

Just because one thing happens in a different place doesn't make one thing better or the other worse in my opinion, does it?

I know these explorers that follow the old chain, but what do I want in a network where 93% of all coins are on 1.5% of the addresses used, I have nothing like the majority and there is nothing left for anyone to mine unless you have a mining center the size of a soccer stadium?
