Growing up I was exceptional when it comes to high jump, for those who doesn't know what inter house sports means. In secondary and primary schools in Nigeria those days, all the students are grouped into different houses, the houses are usually named after colours or prominent individuals within the community. You can have white House, red house or even Bola Ahmed Tinubu house. These houses are made to compete among themselves in short put, high and long jump, 100meter races and so on.
Gambling did not start today, those days we will stake our launch on individuals we think are the best in the various segments of the compitition. You can then stake on the representative of the white House to win and if he doesn't your lauch is gone. Is inter house sports still in Nigeria schools?

Is inter house sports still in Nigeria schools?
It is still common in Nigerian schools, although in other countries they may have a different name that they refer to this kind of competition as. This sort of activity is organized to ensure that students have some kind of extracurricular fun outside regular school activities.
Gambling started way back, even before these school competitions started. The history of gambling goes way back.

Exactly, we can only talk about our experience and the point we met gambling. I think gambling is as old as man. Inter house sports was fun. It seems inter house sports is only in rural schools in villages now because here in the garden City I hardly see schools engaged in inter house sports

So sorry, which country are you from and is there any form of sports among students of same school in your country?

In short these sports already introduced you to gambling and it started when you joined a house. This is sort of a culture already in most countries, it started in your school but in some countries gambling is introduced since they were young because the old folks are into it even in small villages.
So sad for those who loses, they end up hungry and might not concentrate in school lessons lol But I think this will make a student do their best to win the match.

You are right gambling is existing in this world from Thousand Year backs.
And I also think that inter-house games are still popular in schools because they provide more physical exercise which is good for our overall health. Although I don't know if gambling is involved in these games. And even if it were, I wouldn't support it because there are many underage children in the school who could be affected by gambling.

Exactly, it promotes physical fitness and from this inter house sports a lot of vibrant and intelligent sports men has been picked. Some have represented Nigeria in several competitions. It's a good innovation and I wish inter house sports continues because men have been made through it

We do have this kind of sports but only performed in factions like Team A, Team B or Team C some also adopts the color team though it was not just limited to long or high jump but it also includes different kind of sports. I was once came across videos involving the sports of jumping in Africa and I also see tribes do it traditionally and I was amazed on how high they can do it.

This topic caught my attention, because I like things in Nigeria, in fact I like this country even though I don't know it, especially because its people are quite happy and I like that a lot, also its customs and everything that its culture means, I like its football too, so this type of competitions is something that turns out to be exciting, and well, the thing about the houses and the competitions can put it as a sport that can be extended to other countries and obviously it can be put up for betting, it's interesting.

Ofcourse, there are over ten different events, it's not limited to high jump , I just gave few examples. It used to be a very colourful sports those days, so colour that some times other schools are invited to participate

This used to be a massive sports festival at my alma mater, with winners receiving awards and certificates in various categories. I used to compete in 100 meters, sack races, and high jumps.
Sometimes I look back in my mind and wish for those old school days. When there were disagreements about who raced more than the other, we simply waited for interhouse sports to settle the matter.
The cheers from housemates, house masters, and mistresses, as well as the glucose we received after each race, made me wish that every day was inter-house sports. Even when we lose, we always look forward to the next inter-house competition to improve.
At this level, there was some gambling, but I did not realize what we were doing was gambling. We gambled by making the loser pay for our "moi-moi" and ice cream. Indeed, gambling has been part of our activities without our knowledge.

Ice cream and moi moi seem for fun and it introduces the sportsmanship where the losers accepted the fact that they lose and there will be another game where they might win. This sort of bets are for fun, losing lunch however as said by OP sounds like a penalty for losing the game.
But this is true that it somewhat considered a gambling activity. If they are going to wager their lunch food or money to buy ice cream, the fine line can be smudged.

You remind me of my secondary school days when I was sought after for sports activities, back then I remember vividly clearly I belonged to Red House as we had no names but colors represented the name of each house and we had 5 houses all competing for the trophy. I was fully representing my house in a 100-meter race for the junior boys which I always came out 1st position and it became a normal thing not knowing that my friends do stake/bet on me to win their bets. Several times we were doing rehearsals to choose who would represent the house, and my friends always bet on my head and won. One day while we were going to the field where we do our rehearsals, my other friend, then told me that he heard some other of my classmates saying that they would win some good trophy at that day's rehearsals, and that is how I came to know about the fact that some of my classmates do bet on my race so I confronted them not just to make trouble but to take out my cake from the cut and they all laughed and complied they asked me how I knew about it but I insist and me being good at my work always win the race and they make their little funds for the break.

Inter-house sports are intended to promote sports development and instill a sports culture in students, but during this inter-house sports festival, some students who were not particularly good at studying excelled.
I did not participate much in inter-house sports, but I was one of the cheerleaders. Personally, I did not participate in any form of gambling, but I did notice some senior students betting on participants during inter-house sports.

I was shocked today. While I was going to work this morning I saw students training and preparing for inter house sports. I haven't seen them for a while and I was amazed to learn that inter house sports is still very common among secondary schools. When I saw them I remembered old good days. I was an excellent High jumper but that's a story for some other day

What you have been done, that should be do by everyone because not all people will have chance or have the ability to play together in the field, there will be Limited student chosen for the squad but that doesn't mean those who are not in the squad they should to bet or gambling on the inter house Sports.
Actually, I don't have any problem if there can a for the money and as well they are the adult people to gamble. But it is not then that will definitely be and negative sign. By the way I have also done many time as a role of cheerleaders . ;)

Inter house sports competition is still going on in Nigeria till date. nowadays it's not just within a particular school, sometimes the sports competition is between different schools. And it really fun to watch but sometimes it leads to misunderstanding/dispute between some people. The part or house that loss will be thinking that justice was not serve, and it lead to accusations of unfairness and the houses that win will be opposing them. The situation gets more worst when people bet because they have something to gain or to lose, so in that case they might argue or disagree more easily.
