Title: What is the best way to display dark mode for forums?
Post by: bayu7adi on February 18, 2025, 05:14:18 AM
The last few days I often open forums at night, and it makes my eyes tired quickly when opening the forum in normal mode... Yes, my eyes look like this (@_@)

I tried installing some plugins for Google Chrome to display dark mode, but the interface displayed is uncomfortable... it's not like the Facebook page which provides a dark mode feature and the UI displayed is still very comfortable to read...

I want to hear your reviews or maybe tips for activating dark mode to open the altcoinstalks forum.... or at least it can reduce my eyes from working too hard at night when opening a forum that is too bright (because it uses a bright blue background and is predominantly white)...

I am using Dark Reader (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/dark-reader/eimadpbcbfnmbkopoojfekhnkhdbieeh?utm_source=ext_app_menu) which works just fine and does what it is supposed to do. But I am used to the UI so if you are just trying it new, it may take a couple of days for you to adopt.

If it's a mobile then just enable the dark mode along with blue filter which reduces the stress on eyes.

It seems like it's hard to find the perfect one, considering that each plugin will still give some shortcomings such as colors that don't even match in some parts,

Thank you for suggesting the plugin, I've tried it and it does make some parts dark... but the head and buttons are not completely dark... do we really need a dark mode button for this forum? so that the appearance will be really more perfect than using a plugin..

IIRC, some member have already introduced darkmode plug ins here (you can use the search bar). I used to prefer dark mode too but was not a fan of too much contrast in colors. Now, I'm using free tools that reduces eye strain such as F.Lux. You can find and test others but that one is probably the most popular and trusted.

I have two extensions for it at the moment. First one is Dark Reader that Findingnemo has already suggested, but I will show you the settings I use with it and the result.
I use the following settings in Dark Reader:

- Mode: Dark
- Brightness: -10
- Contrast: +20
- Sepia: off
- Grayscale: off

The result:

And the second extension I'm using is Dark Mode (https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/dark-mode/dmghijelimhndkbmpgbldicpogfkceaj), which is also pretty good. Below is the result for this one:

I try to avoid extensions, scripts and externals apps as much as I can so I just enable dark mode from browser if needed.

This is how it looks like, I use Samsung Internet browser: https://talkimg.com/image/qs32N

Only thing that bothers me a bit is header color, it looks out of place, other than that it works well.

Try use eye care function from your device first, reduce the brightness to the least and if this does not give the required results, then try to download an app that controls for device brightness, they automatically adjust to what you have set in for them, lastly, if you wouldn't mind, you can as well buy a colour balance screen in case you make use of a monitor, we need to act fast before things go wrong too much with our eyes.

I also uses both forum BTT and ALTT mostly in night and I don't find the background too itchy as far as I know there are no official dark mood on BTT too. But if we could get here one from the official team that would be too comfortable that I agree with but still I usually on my night mode on my laptop because without it I am unable to use the laptp the bluelight is too hard and I set the level to around 49.

If you are not using that feature, then I prefer to give it a try but it will become an addiction for you haha as without it I can't even spend 30 seconds on my laptops. Overall with plugin like dark reader but I assume you already gave it a try as you did not specifically mentioned which plug in and that's the famous one.

There is another way to make the content dark on chrome I used to do it but I did not find it comfiy but maybe you do, open chrome://flags/ and type in the search bar Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents and enable it with the setting you want or you find best by giving try.

The use of dark mode is essential especially for those having light issues with their eyes, we should be able to control the effects of this brightness entering into our eyes on a daily basis, we shouldn't just wait and watch it as it happens, instead we should be more focused on how we could use any means of seeing this not turning into a defect on us if the necessary action were not taken now.

-snip-
Have you tried tinkering with the settings, especially the theme generation mode? I used Filter+ for this website and it looks good. It applies to every part of the website including the ones unchanged on your image. You can modify settings for each website so it is a good extension to have especially when one filter doesn't work for another website. IIRC Dynamic is the default option and it works fine on most websites.

I can't help but to dim my light for websites that don't have dark mode, this includes bitcointalk too. I used reading mode when using mobile and i guess its called night light in windows desktop, or just using eye glasses with anti rad and blue light.

I just tried the Dark Reader plugin in the Firefox browser. The display you get above still uses the default theme mode from Dark Reader (Dynamic Mode). To make a dark appearance on the header of the Altcounstalks website, try using filter or filter+ mode. Here is an example of the results:

Or you can also add a LED Light bar monitor.

Didn't know about this option, amazing. Thanks. :)

Dark mode didn't look that great with the Dark Reader extension and some parts were still light for me. Turns out the filter mod is required to make it all dark (still, it's not perfect and makes some fonts hard to read, like the "Post reply" title while I'm reading this). I'll try to thinker it a bit more.

Glad it helps you. Based on my experience changing the theme generation is an easy fix for most websites, but sometimes it doesn't work well depending on images, font choices, etc. Most SMF-based forums should work the same way so that's that. Maybe we can add more customization through the dev tools (available in the options) but I never try it myself. Lokos like we need to have a basic knowledge of CSS to use it at least. CMIIW.

If you are using a chrome browser then you may try the force dark mode from the developer option. It is quite easy to use. You won't be needing any extensions or plugins...

Simply open the browser and in the new tab type chrome://flags and press enter. Then you will be redirected to the experimental tab. There you'll see a search box, in the box type "dark mode" and an option would appear named as "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents". Enable that and restart the browser.

Voilaa now you have dark mode for every page. And if you don't like it and want to revert back to the original, then simply disable that option.

I am using Edge browser which has dark mode features. It's very easy to set from Edge browser without a problem. I also don't like bright screen which has made me look for an alternative. Maybe, yiu can try it.

I'm surprised it works really well. From now, i will always use this to reduce eye strain at night. Thank you for sharing this trick. :D

There is also a display setting with the Dark theme in the Firefox browser*, but it does not function on some websites, including the AltcoinsTalks Forum.
When I use this setting, sometimes switching tabs to websites that are not supported by dark themes can be very tiring for my eyes because of the sudden change of appearance from dark to light or vice versa.

Well, that happened with me also. Even though I am a dark theme user in everything, I cannot use dark theme on BTT nor Alttalk. It's just my eyes are used to the whitish theme of these two sites. So even if I try I can't adapt to it, it just feel irritating.

Regarding the dark mode of Firefox, I believe it is just a simple dark mode option. But the one I mentioned above for chrome, is a "forced" experimental feature. That could be the reason why it works for chrome but not Firefox.

I am looking for a built-in feature related to dark mode or night mode in Ms Edge, ... but can't find it in settings menu... if it is a built-in feature of Ms Edge, please show me.... to enable it...

If it comes with an extension, then what is the name of the extension used in the edge browser??

Sometimes it doesn't look perfect on the header of the page... and sometimes even for light colored backgrounds, it still displays the font in white... so sometimes it's not very clear... I've tried several modes available in experiments on chrome://flags , but none of them are better than Dark Reader.... however, I thank you, for letting me know about this feature that I think is quite hidden...

Wow this is nice because I have seen some good contributions to get some extensions and plug-in. Op I am also suffering from you are suffering too but what I normally do to control the eye pain is the phone dark mode and the setting the brightness of the phone to control light. If outside the house I use to brightening the light and if it is inside house I will dim the light (brightness). And if I brighten the light (phone screen) always, my eyes would be paining me until I took drugs before it would go down again.

So I see this thread as one of the useful thread for me in the forum. I appreciate all the contributors.

Hence the name "experimental feature", you can't always have it your way mate. But if you really need a perfect dark mode, you should consider using some plugins or a browser with a built in dark mode feature.

Apart from everything else, one thing I'm quite sure of is that if you are already a light theme user, you won't like the dark theme. I experimented with the dark theme out of curiosity, but I reverted back to the light theme within five minutes. I'm just not used to it, and it irritates me like crazy.

I believe this experimental feature started in 2024, CMIIW. Maybe you can forward your experience to their support team to improve it. I'm a bit confused as to why they made experimental features hidden like this. Is there a specific channel where a group of testers report their experience, and they don't want to deal with releasing a beta app, so they resort to flags?

Anyway, I do agree that Dark Reader works better for now. I wonder if they'll adapt Dark Reader's algorithm on their flags for future updates.

Yes, that's right, I also realize that it is a feature that is still experimental, like other experiments, it is natural to find imperfections....

For the use of dark mode, I actually only activate it at night with minimal light conditions... or when my eyes are really tired, and I want to save energy because there is still some work to be done... so dark mode here is not my habit, it is just an alternative according to the condition of the room and the fitness of my eyes...

It is not always used, but dark mode is very useful when needed.

Absolutely right, this has really help people and also most of the devices have it one their default settings while some don't have it.
So its good for one to use it first before considering the idea of using dark mode, because its not everyone that feel good while using it likewise not everyone also likes using their device with full brightness.
So for everyone's benefit, one should try using the default settings first.
