Title: Keyword Cannibalization in the forum. SEO is getting hit.
Post by: bitmover on April 09, 2025, 01:15:56 AM
I have open several topics already and warned about this. But I would like to take this discussion a little further now

We don't need so many boards. It is bad for navigation. Topics get lost. People can't find what they want, and it is humanly impossible to track all that we want too.

The idea behind duplicating board with same content is to try to trick search engines to improve SEO. The idea is simple: Just create duplicated content all over the forum, more keywords, more google searches. Right? No!

Google is way smarter than that, and it penalizes websites that does that. This is called Keyword Cannibalization

So, what is that?

Quote
What is keyword cannibalization?
Keyword cannibalization is an SEO issue that happens when multiple pages on a website target the same or similar keywords. This leads to a situation where the site’s pages compete against each other for search engine rankings. This can dilute the website’s ability to rank effectively for targeted keywords.

For example, let’s say we have two pages about technical SEO. If we could get more organic traffic overall by combining the two pages into one, that’s a cannibalization issue. The existence of those two pages is eating away at our organic performance.

This is bad for SEO, and there are ways to fix and identify it.

Look at the image below. Don't we see that all over the forum, on all those duplicated board with the same content?

What is the difference between "Forum Related" and "Forum basic questions?"
Or what is the difference between "Crypto Raffle" and "Random Crypto Giveaway"? There are dozens of examples.

Look at the main page of the forum. I just made a simple Ctrl + F to find the word forum. Mentioned 85 times. Now write "forum" in google, and see if it redirects it here...

The word crypto is even more. 96 times! Just in main page

The admin had noted in the other thread you created that the reason for multiple boards isn't to trick google, he rather said that all the boards serve specific purposes. So, what he should do now is try to match interests. If I want to discuss in Board B, and discovers that board B has been merged with board A, I'll have no option than to discuss in board A. We should be able to organise how conversation flow in order not to give room to spammers.

Let's go gradually. I also know that merging boards isn't as simple as expected, else things could go wrong from the backend.
Weldone bitmover for the thread. I agree it's time to further shapen the forum.

It may not have been the intention when structuring the forum to trick G00gle, but it is certainly wrong at the moment and will certainly have a bad influence on the ranking on the search engine.
I completely agree with bitmover here.

I would disagree on how simple it is or not. It is only necessary to merge all similar subboards. If not for search engines, then for user experience. It is impossible for members who have years of experience on the forums to have a problem with navigating the forum, especially when many suggest it.

YEah, and this forum is small.

We have very few threads every day. It should be easy to follow them up.

But the forum organization is basically a maze. It is impossible to find stuff when we have several boards for the same subject, a new and important post can be basically anywhere!

There 2 main boards for crypto giveaways (Airdrops & Giveaways [FREE] and Awards, Contests & Voting). Inside them, there are about 4-5 sub boards, which is basically 10 boards for the same thing.

How would someone keep it up?

Maybe I will create and extension that would merge all those boards in the user browser

Altcoinstalk lite. Would anyone use it? lol

I also noticed there two Coin voting sub-boards- one on Forum related board and another one on Awards, Contest and Voting board. I clicked on these two sub-boards and they're literally the same contents being positioned on two boards.

It's really hard to join a discussion here more than 15 times a week, I've never gone beyond 18 posts a week for ages.

Admin admitted he wants a democratic Forum and if he says Yes, the senators have the right to vote the answer to No. OP you're a Senator, may be you need to ask your colleagues to vote on these suggestions and pass the verdict over to the admin.

FWIW, as a new user trying to find their way around the board it feels like ~50% of the number of boards would be ideal. Currently a bit of overlap and not obvious what's supposed to be where.

Since this forum have advertising, i believe it's something that admin should consider seriously. If altcoinstalks have higher position on Google Search, it could attract more people to bid on ad slot with higher value. Although on other hand, it would also attract some SEO spammer.

I made a post in the Forum Related board and it was moved to the Basic questions about the forum board. I was just asking myself the difference between the boards.

Most times, it becomes hard to even know the perfect board to post a new topic that would get vast ideas from others because some users may find it hard to navigate round all the boards that looks similar.

I have never seen any Altcoinstalks page on the Google Search results unless I specifically put "altcoinstalks" in the search query And I think that's more because the forum is quite small compared to other websites, rather than any SEO penalties being applied by Google on the site (if any).

Regardless, at this stage, being on Google is not a very important priority I imagine. That's more of a long-term goal for this site.

This clearly shows how poor SEO is in this forum

Boards are basically all the same... cutting of 50% of the boards is just so simple.

So merge boards, move topics, etc... doesn't look hard, this should be top priority

I gave up already.  I don't have power or influence ...

I will try again

Now you've proposed in the senate, we can discuss and vote there.

Personally I'm not convinced it's as simple as cutting X% percentage, but more specifically merge which boards and move which sections, as as been done carefully in the past with crypto ecosystem. We want to improve the forum with incremental changes, not have drastic overhauls, for sake of stability alone.

Any proposal formulated in this way will hardly pass the senate, you are right. The idea of cutting of boards should be substantial and reasoned case by case, not abstract. ???

So you got your answer Igebotz...

We need more support from the high elite members of the forum. Otherwise, we will keep seeing more and more boards every week... I gave my opinion and arguments already..
