Here's a useful article I found.. one thing I would add is only go for Masternodes that you believe in the projects.. the ROI on crap will still be crap so make sure you believe in holding it a long time.. since some masternodes are very expensive and require a lot of setup.. so if you do your own research normally, do double before getting involved in masternodes.. including what the project is, the setup, the ROI, variables that could change the payouts, etc.  The tokenomics of not only now, but well into the future are important and the details are key.

It means masternode is high risk and getting in on it is not advisable without proper knowledge to save you from disappointment.

The term Masternode was first used by Dash. In the Dash ecosystem, it is used as a bound anonymizer transaction validator system mechanism. The intention is to be bound here is bound by the contract, in accordance with the provisions that have been set. To find out what Masternode is, we need to look through Dash. The method in the Dash ecosystem, basically functions like a set of servers to support its ecosystem. I took this source from here https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@bcr-steem/get-to-know-the-masternode-in-ecosystems-dash-3855224d8f025

THIS when you get paid for storing a certain number of tokens, for each token this number is different, sort of like passive earnings.
