A Bitcoin ATM is a kiosk that allows a person to exchange Bitcoin and cash. It means you can use it both ways.
A Bitcoin ATM lets you buy bitcoin with cash. Similar to the way you insert a debit card into a traditional ATM and get cash, a Bitcoin ATM accepts cash and spits out bitcoins. Some Bitcoin ATMs also work the opposite way: you can send bitcoins to the machine and receive cash.

Anyway it's better to check before using it. Maybe there are different ones.

The machine will then dispense the amount of cash requested, Kelley says. Other Bitcoin machines recently launched in New Mexico and Boston allow customers to get bitcoins for cash — but don't dispense cash for bitcoins, a key distinction between those machines and the Austin ATM,

Bitcoin ATMs charge an average transaction fee of 8.93 percent, Coin ATM Radar said. Coinsource charges about 8 percent. Cryptocurrency ATMs typically charge a percentage rather than a flat fee, like bank ATMs
An industry that was nonexistent a year ago is flourishing and profitable today, according a news release from bitcoin ATM-maker Lamassu. Internal Lamassu surveys show that standard cash-to-bitcoin locations are averaging $20,000 in transactions per month, while prime locations are averaging $40,000–$60,000 per month.

If i do have bitcoin and i want to exchange them for fiat, will it be possible by using a bitcoin ATM? And if it do, will i be charge with extra fees or gas?

Coinsource, a Texas-based cryptocurrency ATM operator, has made a lot of headway over the years, with 200 BTC-dispensing ATMs across the U.S. and 40 kiosks in the state of New York. The company applied for the Bitlicense in the summer of 2015, but it and other businesses have been able to operate over the years by using provisional licenses.

The Bitlicense was created in 2015 and has been controversial since the day it was introduced. However, because New York is one of the world’s biggest financial centers, large cryptocurrency companies such as Circle, Coinbase and Bitflyer have already secured approval to offer their services in the state. Coinsource will be the 12th company to be granted the Bitlicense and the first crypto-ATM provider to be permitted to operate legally in the state.

Bitcoin machines are not ATMs in the traditional sense and probably use the wording ATM as a neologism. Bitcoin kiosks are machines which are connected to the Internet, allowing the insertion of cash in exchange for bitcoins given as a paper receipt or by moving money to a public key on the blockchain.

Coinsource, the Texas-based cryptocurrency ATM network, has announced plans to expand into upstate New York, where it will install kiosks in Albany, Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester. The move comes shortly after the company revealed it had secured a virtual currency license, or Bitlicense, from the New York State Department of Financial Services.

The cryptocurrency ATM network has also announced it has expanded into North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. Crypto automated teller machines (ATMs) are stand-alone electronic kiosks that allow users to buy and sell cryptocurrency in exchange for cash or with a debit card. All crypto ATMs sell Bitcoin, while some also offer other cryptocurrencies. Not all crypto ATMs allow the sale of crypto, as some are limited to purchases only.
