Sex hackers net $½ million in Bitcoin - Crypto News Weekly 24.08.18

Vitalik, time to ostracize fake Satoshi, South Korean tricked out of $ millions in Bitcoin in Nice, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak joins crypto startup and SEC rejects multiple ETF proposals as too risky.

How sex blackmailers netted $0.5 million in Bitcoin

Cyber security firm Banbreach told Motherboard recently they have been monitoring Bitcoin addresses mentioned in social media posts from people targeted in a sextortion scam and have already seen over $ 500,000 of Bitcoin transferred, with the actual figures likely to be far higher.

The enterprising criminals have bought up personal passwords from the dark web from previous website breaches such as LinkedIn and then contacted mass amounts of random targets. The ploy declares that they have breached your computer in the past, gaining control of your webcam and have compromising videos of you watching porn, then going on to demand between $2000 to $8000 in Bitcoin to destroy the videos. They go on to say they have been monitoring the victim and compiled a split screen video of what they were watching and what they were doing captured by the webcam.

Vitalik says it’s time to ostracize fake Satoshi Nakamoto

Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, has called on the Bitcoin Cash community to avoid a split and should embrace it as an opportunity to conclusively ostracize and reject Craig Wright.  The call refers to the man who has claimed to be the real Satoshi Nakamoto (creator of Bitcoin) threatening to hard fork Bitcoin Cash in a dispute over which direction the development should take.

Vitalik went on to say that Bitcoin Craig (BCC) would be a fitting successor to the previous user of the ticker, which was the well-known Ponzi scheme Bit Connect (BCC), which is now still hitting the headlines as many of its supporting figures are having their time in court.

Just last week Divyesh Darji, the Indian head of the BitConnect scam, was arrested on his arrival at Dubai airport for his part, and in June, Australian police announced they believed the wife of John Bigation (another Bitconnect executive under investigation) probably had been murdered, with two Indian suspects being sought.

South Korean tricked out of $ millions Bitcoin in Nice

The next story comes straight out of a black comedy involving a South Korean rich businessman who runs a crypto exchange being set up for a complicated sting costing him over $2.3 million of Bitcoin and leaving him with a case full of poorly photoshopped and printed 500-euro notes.

After traveling to Nice in France to meet the Serbian buyer in July, the exchange was made in a hotel but afterwards the duped target realized the money was just adobe photoshopped images of Euros printed on paper. After reporting the matter to French police, they apprehended the conman living the high life in a luxury hotel in Cannes, wearing a $100,000 watch and driving a luxury car. Police have yet to apprehend his accomplice who maybe has a touch more common sense than to flaunt his gains publically.

There is a word for this, it is not sex hackers the word is sextortion. I'm sure they have more victims, but it's creepy how they managed to control their webcams
