One of the biggest leaks of user data in the history of China has just occurred, with a small group of hackers announcing to the world that they had been able to steal the data of over 130 million different individuals.
Huazhu, which owns more than 10 hotel brands and manages more than 3,800 hotels across 382 mainland cities, reported the data breach on Tuesday after finding a post on a dark web forum about the sale of its clients’ personal data and booking information.
According to local media, the leaked information potentially includes 240 million lines of data containing phone numbers, email addresses, bank accounts and booking details, and was available on the dark web for 8 bitcoin or about US$56,000.
The main outside investigation into the matter is being headed by Zibao, which is a Chinese cybersecurity group. The organization has outlined their belief that the leak happened while developers and programmers with the hotel chain decided to upload some parts of the database to GitHub earlier in the month.
In a statement published on Weibo, Huazhu stated that they are investigating the leak and the authorities have been informed.
