can anyone point me to any research about projected numbers of users there are likely to be in cryptocurrency in 2018 to 2020.

Nobody knows the exact number of crypto users in the next 2 years. But I'm sure crypto will be more widely known. And of course more and more people will invest in crypto in the next 2 years.

Undefined is the best answer for you. Birth won't end. Membership to cryptosystem won't also end. This is a nonstop place as long as the admin will not put a limit numbers of members.
