Title: Quote properly - how to avoid "wall of text" when quoting
Post by: Leonardo on October 04, 2018, 03:52:46 PM
"Quote" is a very popular and useful feature of each forum.  By quoting, you can directly reply to the post that you agree or argue. But sometimes, you only want to respond to a couple of sentences of a long post and don't know how to quote. Here's what you'll need to do:
(Pretend that I want to quote the first paragraph of this post: https://www.altcoinstalks.com/index.php?topic=54697.0)
There're two ways to do this:

1. Quote without mentioning author
This is the easier way by using this BBcode:
Code: [Select]
[quote][/ quote]
Copy the content that you want to quote and paste it between the brackets.
Thing goes like:
Code: [Select]
[quote] 1. Remember password
Even I choose "Forever" on the small box next to the "Login" button, I have to re-type Username and Password on the next log in (same web browser, no log-out from anywhere). This is a popular feature as it can be found in any other websites. Hope we'll have it in near fut [/quote]

And you get:

2. Quote with mentioning author

- Step 3: Hit "Delete" and then type your reply on the line under the [/quote]

Avoid "wall of text"
Sometimes, you only want to say I agree with a long post. But you will quote a wall of text just to say agree? To avoid this, you should use <...> or ~snip~ in your quote. It's like this:

Or you can just remove this (author=Leonardo link=topic=57962.msg322427#msg322427 date=1538661166) after you click the quote button and keep the message from the quote.

NOT REMOVED:
Code: [Select]
[quote author=Leonardo link=topic=57962.msg322427#msg322427 date=1538661166]
Message there and message here
[/quote]

Result:
Message there and message here

REMOVED:
Code: [Select]
[quote]
Message there and message here
[/quote]

RESULT:
Quote
Message there and message here

To make it simple, once you click the QUOTE just ERASE all after the "quote" word or start from "author" word.
Ex:  author=Leonardo link=topic=57962.msg322427#msg322427 date=1538661166
Take Note: Don't erase these codes
Code: [Select]
[quote] and [/quote]

Yea, but when we need to reply someone, we should keep author to they can understand we are talking about their opinion.

Or if you want to reply to someone's reply/post in a shortcut just use the "@" symbol then the username

Example: @Leonardo good post, keep it up! +1 karma for you!

Yes Indeed but there are many ways to quote. Quoting a message without the author and only where the message came from, quoting with the author's name, quoting a message without information like author's name or where you get the message.

EXAMPLE:
With author's name from Unknown

Code: [Select]
[quote author=Unknown link=topic=57962.msg325288#msg325288 date=1538735614]
Or if you want to reply to someone's reply/post in a shortcut just use the "@" symbol then the username

Example: @Leonardo good post, keep it up! +1 karma for you!
[/quote]

RESULT:
Or if you want to reply to someone's reply/post in a shortcut just use the "@" symbol then the username

Example: @Leonardo good post, keep it up! +1 karma for you!

Without the author's name:

Code: [Select]
[quote]
Or if you want to reply to someone's reply/post in a shortcut just use the "@" symbol then the username

Example: @Leonardo good post, keep it up! +1 karma for you!
[/quote]

RESULT:

Where the message came from/link without the author's name:
Code: [Select]
[quote author=https://www.google.com/search?q=quote&oq=quote&aqs=heirloom-srp..]
quote
/kwōt/
verb

repeat or copy out (a group of words from a text or speech), typically with an indication that one is not the original author or speaker.
give someone (the estimated price of a job or service).

noun

a quotation from a text or speech.
a quotation giving the estimated cost for a particular job or service.
    quotation marks.
[/quote]

RESULT:
Quote from: https://www.google.com/search?q=quote&oq=quote&aqs=heirloom-srp..
quote
/kwōt/
verb

    quotation marks.

WHY DO WE NEED TO QUOTE PROPERLY?
We need to learn on how to quote and quote properly because if you can't quote properly the result will be "PYRAMID QUOTING" in which the space used in a single page will be lessen like 1 PAGE for only a one reply that can take all space in a single page that the next reply will be seen in second page or next page of the thread.

Nice posting. Most of the newbies tend to quote the whole post which some of the users were greatly initiative to. This is a problem when it comes to scrolling new informations for other users also. Verification of quotation should be quite uneasy for us but rather to be helpful, quoting is a really good part of reference.
