Title: what makes an ICO investment risky?
Post by: princessgirl on November 06, 2018, 01:55:33 AM
ICO investments like any other investment becomes risky when an investor invests blindly without any knowledge about the details of the portfolio or coin. Researching into the coin or ICO gives a clue on either to choose a short term or long term investment plan for the coin because not all coins are worth keeping for long term.

Actually ICO is not so risky if we can distinguish which ICO is good and which is bad by doing research starting from white paper, the website, then the team and so on. From there later when you have been able to research the ICO project well, I am sure in the future the risk will not occur and can be minimized. I am very sure of that.

All forms of investment are risky, I am sad to see so many ico scams, investing in ico is risky because there is no legal entity that regulates ico and if you read the whitepaper from the ico project, you will see the same message, like all forms of investment in ico, requires you to do research first before investing

ICO investment is at risk because of our carelessness and our lack of knowledge about ICO. So that we are sometimes wrong in making decisions by investing in a less good ICO Project or Scam. That makes the risk at ICO even greater. Therefore we must learn a lot about ICO so that we can minimize the risks.

I object on the part that some coin not worth for long term hold. Some coins have relatively potential idea and you're saying some aren't worth holding? Maybe those shitty pum and dump coins who has listed exchange but no product to show or demonstrate.

Actually investing in ico is not risky if you have good knowledge about the projects they have developed, have friends and discuss projects on their telegram channel, so you can conclude this project really has a good team. Many ico are successful now, but because of some fraud, someone is waiting for the listed coins to be exchanged when ico takes place and investors start believing so they participate in ico's investment

Well an ICO makes risky if we don't know anything about the projects of ICOs, if we don't know about their products, the developer of team and any other aspects fundamental of ICO projects. Should before we make investment in ICOs projects makes sure we have knew more about the ICOs projects, including the management of money when investment in the ICO, how much the money will be used for investment in the ICO projects.
And this way can be used on all of instrument of investment including in stocks markets. Unfortunatelly there are no many people who know about it and they never learn more about the investment in their life.

Lots of factors can make it risky.

The project can never reach real life adoption and it may fail. It may be a scam. There are so many risks involved. However if you DYOR right then you can't go wrong. You need some experience to invest in ICOs.

These "investors" on short term plan are the same people who dumps once the coin or token is listed on an exchange. These are probably the same people who intends to sell immediately and buy more once the price dips.

You are absolutely right in thinking, you should always approach the study of any project with full care and caution, because there are a lot more scam projects now than there was before and you should not forget that you should always make profit in time and not stay too long to wait for the incredible price of a token.

First of all, you don't know the project area most probably.
Token metrics are important to investigate so that you don't get f.cked on the road.
There are no any regulations, so that project owners can fly away with the money.

I think we can say that ico is too risky to invest because lots of ico project are gone quickly and it goes to scam, people investing ico because they really think that they can gain big profits when ico get listed into an exchage they take the risk to think they can earn more from their investment, indeed i must say it's too risky to invest in ico.

It is necessary to study the project completely, review the technical document, review the website, the roadmap, here you can find many things, some are even too lazy to spend money on the website and then everything becomes clear. And most importantly, study the project team, study everyone directly, follow the links to their names, see their type of activity, and so on. You will need to write to them all and get an answer. if the project writes that it does not want to show the command, then it is 99.9% SCAM!

investing in ico is really more risky this time due to the continuous rising of the scam ICO on the crypto feild. A lot of ico is scammed and if we are going to invest on it we can surely loss profits. Those scammed ICO is one of the factors that affect crypto feild today, the trust is really important it can really affect the crypto. If scam ICO will still exist in the future maybe the trust of the community in crypto will be lost.

Right. Investing in ICO requires research to understand the project developers. Investment in ICO is not as binding as investing in other physical projects, but sometimes ICO investments can get quick profits like last 2017 and can get long profits like this year. I think an investor must know this condition.

What you are saying is more to the knowledge of choosing a coin to hold and invest, to me what is more risky is the highly volatile market just like bitcoin rollercoaster up and down in 1-2 years and it is scary and if you look deeper many ICO coins suffer the same fate also once they are out into the market. So choose your coins wisely if not you will see your investment go down the drain the next day.

Because ICO is an investment, we spend money, and the money may not be used according to the agreement when the ICO is taken away without clear information or better known as Scam. Some things become the problem of the ICO Scam, which is the unclear project, the purpose of collecting funds made by developers and teams that are unclear or not emblazoned. Usually this will be explained in the whitepaper. Therefore we must be more careful and observant if we want to invest in the ICO.

The biggest risk when investing in an ICO startup is the risk that the project will not fulfill its obligations and in the future its product will not be in demand and useful to the community. I'm not talking about fraudsters, of which there are hundreds now, among the projects. This is a separate category of risk. In general, friends, you need to carefully choose a project for investment and understand that your money can disappear.

Actually the investment is all at risk. But all depends on the condition of the project we are investing in. If the project at ICO is good and many investors enter, I'm sure it will be profitable and the risk of loss will be small. Vice versa. If the ICO is not good or even a Scam, it will hurt you and the risk going forward is also great for you and everyone in it.

My opinion, As is the case with any investments there is always a risk of capital being lost. However, the nature of ICOs and the space in which they operate also present a host of new dilemmas that investors must be aware of.
ICOs are unregulated securities that allow the founders to raise huge amounts of capital without having a tangible product, prototype or beta version. They are simply an ambitious idea. As a result, it is a safe assumption that the vast majority of ICOs will fail to deliver their product and lose investors the money they invested. This must always be taken into account by investors and is why extensive research of the concept and team is encouraged...

Capability of the team members

The list can go on and on.

The risk that I fear is the absence of regulations that are truly guaranteed by the government or the Central Bank in the world. This causes the risk to be very high if there are no Escrow facilities or third-party investment fund holders. If the investment fund holder is the developer himself, it is almost certain that the ICO is an ICO Scam. so we need to avoid such things

In my opinion there are two risks that can adversely affect investors, namely ICO scam and ICO which cannot increase public trust. ICO scams are very often encountered today, there are many people who are not responsible and only make ICO a way to collect more money for personal interests and usually they use fake teams. and ICO which cannot increase public trust is if ICO coins that have been registered are exchanged and they cannot increase the price and what happens is that there is no order on the coin so that the price of the coin will fall to several times the ICO price.

Because too many ICOs are scam now.  I think It is the reason why ICO investment is risky.  It is my opinion.

The fake team members and fake project are the risks in ICO investment. But it can be minimized by doing a research before joining an ICOs. Sure, ICO coins need a time to improve the values. It commonly improves along with the development of the project.

Because the ICO is raising funds by development.
If the #DevelopmentTeam  has greediness then the money can be taken and stolen by development.

I still remember the CENTRA project, this coin has been listed on the Exchange and a list on Coinmarkletcap but the end is a SCAM!

I like this article about the investments in ICO wriiten by BY  MORGAN E. WESTLING

Investing in an ICO, or an initial coin offering, can provide both huge financial benefits and huge risks. Many people are intrigued by the growing digital currency industry that includes blockchain technology, because the potential is there to raise money very quickly. However, long term, the outcome can be grim, and many people end up losing the money they initially invested. There are many reasons why most ICOs fail. When investing in an ICO, people must exercise due diligence and make sure they know the risk they are taking. Here are some of the most common risks when investing in an ICO.

Regulatory

One big risk regarding ICOs is the fact that right now, every ICO is unregulated. However, in the future, this may not be the case. Everyone is currently investing in ICOs to make a quick buck, but they don’t realize that the quicker ICOs become popular, the more likely ICOs are to become regulated soon. If ICOs do become regulated, what will happen to the ICO tokens that have been previously purchased? Many ICOs may be sold or lose value. ICO regulation is a huge unknown and a huge risk for those looking to raise funds and keep them.

Business

Investing in an ICO is risky whether you choose an Ethereum ICO or a Bitcoin ICO. While smart contracts may be put in place to help you with your exchanges, there are no official licenses in place to solidify your investments. If you are contributing to or trying to start your own business, a developing team of many ICOs and ICO contributors may seem like a great way to raise money; however, long term, this may come back to bite you. The ICO price can drop quickly and you can lose everything your company was built on if you aren’t extremely careful.

Taxes

There are many tax risks and issues that can arise from investing in an ICO. ICO tokens can be classified as many different things when it comes to taxes. Some are classified as equity, some are property, some are debt, and some are prepaid goods/services. Every ICO must be treated differently depending on its tax classification. The risk that comes with this digital currency is making sure to report and withhold every ICO token correctly. Getting in trouble with the government over taxes is no joke in the real world. Many people may think they can get away with small slips in their taxes when using blockchain technology, but this is not a risk worth taking.

Cyber Attacks

Venture capitalists who invest in ICOs take a huge risk, because blockchain technology is a digital currency and can be easily susceptible to cyber attacks. Along with many other risks, cybercriminals are always looking for new ways to hack the system and steal cryptocurrency through the web. The most common way that cyber attacks happen in the real world is through phishing scams, in which individual’s identities are stolen.

Fraud

Along with cyber attacks, investing in an ICO has the risk for fraud. Identity theft is common with initial coin offering ICOs, because if a person’s identity is successfully stolen from outside the United States and their digital currency is taken, it is very unlikely that the authentic owner of the ICO tokens will be able to recover their funds. Unfortunately, once outside of United States jurisdiction, there is not much power over the situation. With the internet and digital space being so large, it allows fraud to happen internationally, and the risk becomes much more real.

Token Risks

When investing in an ICO, you can have ICO tokens. These tokens are based on smart contracts such as Ethereum. The risks of buying these ICO tokens is that they can be stolen, lost, and your online or offline wallet can be hacked just like real world money. Also, when buying ICO tokens, there is no guarantee that you will be able to sell these tokens later. The game of Ethereum ICOs and ICO tokens is a risk you must be willing to take. Make sure you know how to buy an ICO the right way if you do decide to buy the tokens.

Some of the ICO projects ran away with the money they got from the ICO stage and left some cartoons at their website which says "aaaaand it's gone".
