Ethereum Forum / Re: ethereum etf approved just now

BlackRock filed an amended S-1 form for its proposed spot ether (ETH) exchange-traded fund (ETF) that revealed more information about the product that was recently approved for listing in the U.S.
...
Subject to regulatory approval, assets held in the ETF can be redeemed for cash or even ether. The iShares Ethereum Trust ether ETF will list and trade under “ETHA.”

Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas called the updated S-1 a “good sign,” adding that a launch by the end of June was “a legit possibility.”

When I started my crypto journey, I bought a little bit of many different coins.  It took me a long time to figure out that staking was a thing.  I opened an account with Kraken back then in order to stake some of the coins I was already holding.  It worked great until the SEC/government cracked down on exchanges (Kraken in particular) offering US customers custodial staking services.  It wasn't long after that that I bought a Ledger Nano X, took self custody of my crypto and started learning how to stake my crypto natively.  It's been an adventure learning the different nuances in how staking works with each crypto.  Some are much easier to manage than others.  I wrote a pretty detailed report on my experience a few months ago here:

ETH price moved from USD ~$3000 to USD $3800 when the approval news broke.  The ETH ETFs are not yet actively trading.  The applications are moving through the approval process.  When they actually begin trading, ETH will start seeing upwards price pressure.

When the BTC ETFs were approved, Grayscale converted their BTC trust into an ETF which finally allowed investors who had bought in to the trust over the previous decade to sell/exit/realize profits.  The Grayscale ETF had massive outlfows comparable to the inflows of all the other BTC ETFs combined.

There is no comparable ETH trust being converted to a ETF that will exert selling pressure / outflows.  Once the ETH ETFs begin trading, it should be mostly upward pressure on ETH price.

... so the question whether ETH is a security or a commodity is - at least in the USA - settled once and for all?

Officially, from what I've read from lawyers posting on X/Twitter, ETH must be considered a commodity once the SEC approves one of the applicant's S-1 registration statement (a formality before they begin trading, but a formality that has not yet happened).

Since you mention this Eric Balchunas guy ...

He's Bloomberg's ETF analyst/guru.  He's a good follow on Twitter/X - often breaking news before any media reports.

If the spot ETH ETF is approved, it will be a true shock to everyone I know in DC who's close to this process.

That doesn't mean it won't happen.

It means approval could signal a major shift in US crypto policy after the SAB 121 vote, perhaps more important than the ETF itself.

Update: @JSeyff and I are increasing our odds of spot Ether ETF approval to 75% (up from 25%), hearing chatter this afternoon that SEC could be doing a 180 on this (increasingly political issue), so now everyone scrambling (like us everyone else assumed they'd be denied).

  •     The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) asked aspiring ether exchange-traded fund exchanges to update 19b-4 filings ahead of a key deadline this week.
  •     The SEC had previously been expected to reject the ether ETF filings, and while there's no guarantee of approval, the move suggests progress is being made.

ETH up 15% since Eric's tweet.

Crypto-related Sites / Re: Coinmarkatcap?

Coinmarketcap.com is excellent, but I wish they would include an option for us to view a graph of a token's market cap over time.  That doesn't always mirror the token's price over time because of the inflationary/deflationary tokenomics/supply.  I have suggested it to them before, but they don't seem very interested in publishing the graphs.

Cardano Forum / Re: Best wallet for holding cardano
« on: May 17, 2024, 02:20:21 PM »
I am using Ledger Live with a Ledger Nano X as my wallet.  I also use the Typhon Wallet (browser extension) connected to the Ledger.  The Typhon Wallet makes staking and managing Cardano tokens (many of which Ledger live doesn't recognize), easy.

Other Popular Cryptos / Coins / Theta Labs' THETA and TFUEL
« on: May 17, 2024, 02:07:12 PM »
I'm somewhat new to this site and am surprised there doesn't appear to be a discussion dedicated to THETA and TFUEL.  This seems like a really promising project.  They just held an AMA and showed off some of the developments in the pipeline and there is a lot happening.

Executive Summary (helicopter view):
  • THETA is governance token (can be staked to earn TFUEL).  THETA is currently capped at 1 billion tokens.
  • Theta Edge Node software can be downloaded and installed on any Windows or Linux computer.  The Edge Node software can perform jobs for the Theta Edge Cloud computing network.  Each job your Edge Node completes earns TFUEL (or another TNT token such as LAVITA).  The jobs are currently related to either AI processing or video processing.
  • You can stake TFUEL to your Edge Node to upgrade it to an Elite Edge Node earning 3-4x more TFUEL

In the AMA they showcased more AI and video processing technology that they are rolling out.  They are also partnering with centralized cloud computing providers like Amazon Web Service to provide backup computing power.  They also mentioned that Edge Node for Android is coming "within weeks".

They are aiming to become the most scalable and cost effective cloud computing option available for AI applications (and graphics processing).  Seems like a huge growth market to me.

VET was listed on Coinbase some time back and Coinbase included a "Learn and Earn" video/question session for Coinbase clients to learna bout it while earning a few bucks worth of it.  That's the only reason I am even aware it exists.

I'm in the USA.  Binance is in the crosshairs of America's war on crypto.  There are too many question marks on Binance/BNB for me.  I bought coins on blockchains that have active development and are trying to carve out some real world use cases.  I'm not in crypto for day trading.

I tend to buy and hold instead of actively trading.  I own and have staking positions with (in no particular order):

Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Cosmos (ATOM), Cardano (ADA), Polkadot (DOT), Avalanche (AVAX), Polygon (MATIC), THETA & TFUEL, SUI and a few bucks worth of VARA.

Specifically though, the fifth point is the most decisive, I think. If prosecutors ...

There is a contingent within the US government that is actively supporting and prosecuting a war on crypto.  The executive branch is the worst offender with the Biden administration being completely hostile and directing Gensler and the SEC as their pitbull.  The legislative branch warriors are mostly Democrats aligned with Elizabeth Warren.  The judicial branch seems to be the only holdout - with many court rulings going against the SEC.

The Department of Justice (DoJ) is part of the executive branch.  They get their marching orders from the Biden administration.  Any court cases that help to mitigate the malfeasance will require significant effort from private actors.  The DoJ isn't going to help.
