The Wall Street Journal reports today that Philadelphia is the latest jurisdiction to pass a law against not accepting cash. Most retailers in the city must accept cash beginning in July. Democrats are leading the charge on these laws, viewing them as a way to protect people who don’t have credit or debit cards.

PHILADELPHIA JOINS NORTHEAST CASH COALITION

Philadelphia’s not alone in its war on cashless businesses.

New York City councilman Ritchie Torres admits that cashless payments are the future but is nevertheless backing a proposal requiring local businesses to accept cash. He told the Wall Street Journal:

“I think it’s more the future than a fad, and that’s why there is a need for a legislative response.”

Massachusetts and New Jersey have statewide laws relating to cashless stores. Massachusetts requires all stores to accept cash, while New Jersey simply bans cashless stores altogether.

The laws have a decidedly Luddite thrust to them – you must use this ancient form of money because we say so. It doesn’t matter if it’s less efficient or puts your business at risk. All the while, the rest of the world is increasingly moving in the opposite direction. Sweden is leading the way to a cashless future, with just 1% of its yearly transactions happening in cash.

That said, credit and debit cards have their own set of problems. Kroger plans to stop accepting Visa at many locations because the transactions were too costly on a macro level. Such situations create an opportunity for cryptocurrency, in an ethereal sense. Major businesses accepting cryptocurrency is still not a normality, and it may never be.

found an interesting video on youtube lol #cryptocurrency can be addiction

Ever since the bitcoin boom of late 2017, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Ripple, and even DogeCoin have made their way into the mainstream. But for some predisposed to addiction, the volatility of trading cryptocurrency can sometimes become a dangerous obsession.

In this episode of Transmissions, Motherboard goes to Castle Craig Hospital in Scotland, a rehabilitation facility that recently added treatment for cryptocurrency addiction to its gambling rehabilitation program intended to help those struggling with betting specifically on (unstable) digital currencies.

Following the successful launch of their Android Crypto Wallet, Opera has announced a similar product is ready to hit iOS devices. The company’s official blog has invited users to sign up for the product’s upcoming public testing phase. It will allow testers to check out the product ahead of its official launch.

Similarly to its Android counterpart, Opera’s Crypto Wallet will be fully integrated into the Opera Touch browser. In addition to cryptocurrency wallet functionalities, the app will also include support for dApps and Web 3 browsing.

“We identified the biggest challenge to be the lack of easy-to-use solutions for crypto,” wrote Julia Szyndzielorz on Opera’s official blog. “We removed this hurdle by integrating an easy-to-use wallet into our Android browser. Now, we are delivering this seamless experience to iOS users.”

On Youtube / Ethereum Hard Forks Successfully
« on: March 02, 2019, 12:32:20 PM »
The Ethereum blockchain after a number of security-related delays has managed to upgrade its blockchain network. According to The Ethereum blog, Constantinople and St Petersburg will be implemented onto the Ethereum blockchain when the system hits block 7,280,000. According to a Reddit page, just two hours ago from the time of writing, we are already currently 25 blocks into Constantinople. The online cryptocurrency community expressed a lot of gratitude and thanks to the Ethereum Developers who made this hard fork a reality. It looks like everything went smoothly and well.

While there are two updates, Constantinople is the main change to the Ethereum Network. St Petersburg simply an upgrade designed to disable a specific part within Constantinople's code. Earlier this year, Ethereum was to hard fork, but someone found a significant smart contract security flaw. St Petersburg is designed to disable the smart contract security issue.

Now for a quick overview, the Constantinople update will act as a "maintenance and optimization update," and will have its primary effect on Ethereum miners. So instead of three EThereum tokens per block, miners now receive two. A similar update has happened in the past during October 2017, where Byzantium, a previous fork had lowered the block rewards from five to three Ethereum tokens. The Constantinople fork also provides additional improvements to the EThereum blockchain's efficiency, speed, and energy consumption. If you guys are interested in understanding more concerning the Constantinople hard fork, make sure you watch this video from James.

Bitcoin and Ethereum are two of my favourite cryptocurrencies, and together they make up more than 90% of my crypto portfolio. I thought it would be fun to discuss which of the two I believe will capture the most value long term, and why.

I think this discussion is useful for illustrating the differences between value creation and value capture.

Facebook is talking to exchanges about potentially listing a cryptocurrency.

That’s the main finding from a New York Times story published Thursday on several efforts to introduce native cryptocurrencies to widely used messaging platforms. The Times reports that Signal and Telegram are also planning to roll out tokens over the next 12 months.

Citing “four people briefed on the negotiations,” the Times reports that Facebook has told exchanges it expects to get a product out in the first half of 2019.

The Facebook project, which had previously been reported by Bloomberg as a stablecoin for its WhatsApp messaging service, would be the most high profile of the bunch. The social media giant has 2.5 billion global users.

One source speaking to CoinDesk on condition of anonymity confirmed that the company is working on a stablecoin, based on past meetings with the Menlo Park company.

Facebook has beefed up its blockchain team in recent months, with a hiring push and at least one talent-minded acquisition. The company is currently seeking to fill nearly 20 blockchain-related positions. According to the Times report, more than 50 Facebook engineers are dedicated to the company’s blockchain project.

Increasing the reach of the project, the story notes prior reporting that Facebook has plans to integrate users across its Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram messaging services.

Brady Dale contributed reporting.
