Google to ban ads on cryptocurrencies, related products!

Alphabet Inc's Google said on Wednesday it will ban advertisements for cryptocurrencies and related content starting in June.

Under the new policy, the company will ban ads for unregulated or speculative financial products like binary options, cryptocurrency and financial spread betting among others.

In a separate blog post, Google said it took down 3.2 billion ads that violated its advertising policies in 2017, nearly double the number of ads it removed in 2016.

"Improving the ads experience across the web, whether that's removing harmful ads or intrusive ads, will continue to be a top priority for us," Scott Spencer, director of sustainable ads, said.

In January, Facebook Inc said it will ban ads promoting financial products and services tied to cryptocurrencies and initial coin offerings.

The policy will be implemented across its platforms, including Facebook, Audience Network and Instagram, the company said.

BSP says proposed law can help regulate cryptocurrencies.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said there is a piece of legislation in the works and well on its way to passing Congress, which will help it better regulate cryptocurrencies.

The BSP and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are also preparing for a nationwide effort to spread more information on so-called digital coins.

Philippines Investigates Crypto Firm over Use of Politician's Name.

The Philippines' Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered an investigation into a cryptocurrency firm that allegedly used the name of Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III in order to lure clients.

The politician, commonly known as "Koko" Pimentel, was allegedly misrepresented by Digital Currency Co. Ltd. and Boy Joven in a cryptocurrency venture called Philippine Global Coin, according to a department order released yesterday, as reported by ABS CBN News.

Denying any affiliation with the cryptocurrency firm, Pimentel stated that there is "no partnership" between him and the firm, or the senate and the firm.

He further said in a statement released Monday that he was shocked at the Digital Currency Co. Ltd's "bold claims," and added that he had met company representatives, but only as a "matter of courtesy to visitors."

Pimentel further warned international Filipino workers to be careful over such cases where, names of government officials and organizations are used in investment schemes.

He said:

"The government will never engage in activities that will profit off their sacrifices and hard work. Always check with the Philippine Embassy to verify individual claims of this nature."

The order stated that, if sufficient evidence is found to support the case, appropriate charges should be filed against the company.

Balita Cryptocurrency / Bitcoin too good to be true?

Bitcoin too good to be true?

As of this writing, one bitcoin is already equivalent to $10,338. Late last year, it reached an all-time high of $19,783.06. Still, it was a meteoric rise from just $2.00 in December 2011.

The average daily volume of bitcoin is $40 million and its global market value is around $213 billion. In the Philippines, monthly trading volume is now estimated to be about $6 million from only $2 million in the previous year.

Indeed, bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, is the newest buzzword in the market. We often hear of people making and losing tons of money on bitcoins within a single day of trading. Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that bitcoin was down 25 percent and its rival cryptocurrencies, ripple and ethereum, sank as much as 40 percent and 26 percent, respectively.

Bitcoin is essentially a virtual currency (VC), which is any type of digital unit that is used as a medium of exchange, a veritable currency that exists in the digital world. Unlike cold hard cash, VC is not backed by any underlying asset. It is neither issued nor guaranteed by any central bank or government. The fluctuations in price is colossal as it is dependent solely on supply and demand.

Nobel laureates, business tycoons and government leaders have been lining up to caution buyers. Russian President Vladimir Putin weighed in on the debate and said: “If you invest, the risk is on you. Today you invested everything, and tomorrow everything is lost.” Robert Shiller, a Nobel laureate, professor of Economics at Yale University and an expert in market excesses, said that bitcoin was the biggest financial bubble of all time. He said we might return to the dark ages because there was very little clarity concerning the cryptocurrency. The chair and CEO of JP Morgan, Jamie Dimon, was famous for calling VC a “fraud” that “would eventually blow up.”

Our own Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), while recognizing the existence of VCs, has been cautioning the investing public. It said buying VCs presented a highly speculative and risky undertaking, which might result in huge financial losses. To minimize the risks to the investing public, the BSP strongly encouraged existing and prospective VC users to deal only with BSP-registered VC exchanges and maintain only a sufficient amount of cryptocurrencies enough to address transaction requirements.

On the other hand, many governments such as Japan and Germany have issued favorable cryptocurrency regulations. In Germany, tax laws provide an exemption from the 25-percent tax on profits for bitcoin that has been held for one year. In Japan, a new law was enacted authorizing the use of digital currency as a method of payment, essentially granting it the same legal status as fiat currency. In America, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission recently announced that financial firms including the CME Group, CBOE and Cantor Fitzgerald would list financial products offering exposure to cryptocurrencies.

Is cryptocurrency for real or is it another global financial fiasco waiting to happen? This is a global issue involving, as it should, issuers and investors based all over the world. Before it is too late, the world’s regulators must immediately take a united stance on the matter once and for all. In the meantime, the investing public is advised to exercise extreme caution regarding the acquisition, possession and trading of VCs or dealing with VC-related offers.

As millennials embrace bitcoin, business group bats for regulation.

MANILA - A group of businessmen called for regulations to protect investors in cryptocurrencies as these digital tokens make their way to the mainstream.

The Shareholders Association of the Philippines (SharePHIL) told ANC's Market Edge that cryptocurrencies are attracting a lot of attention among investors, especially millennials, and that regulators need to step up to ensure they are protected.

Ed Franciso, SharePHIL director, said his own children have invested money in bitcoin even if they were not completely aware of the issues surrounding it.

"This just goes to show that even without the proper education, [about cryptocurrencies] our kids and the millennials are buying into this," Tolentino said.

Francis Lim, SharePHIL president, meanwhile cited the case of agribusiness firm Calata Corp, which tried to raise money via an "initial coin offering" after its shares were delisted by the stock exchange over disclosure violations.

The Securities and Exchange Commission later ordered Calata to stop the issuance of its cryptocurrency.

"We cannot leave it unregulated for the sake of the investors," Lim said.

Francisco, meanwhile, said that while he was unsure of how to look at cryptocurrencies, he welcomed blockchain, the technology behind bitcoin and other digital tokens.

"My personal view is blockchain is something we should welcome in all industries," Francisco said.

Cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin are regulated by the central bank for applications such as remittances and payments,

SharePHIL is holding a forum on cryptocurrencies on March 12 at the Dusit Thani hotel in Makati.
