About five or six years ago, it was possible to profitably mine Bitcoin using nothing more than a desktop PC. Fast forward to today, and profitability requires huge amounts of hash power and, in turn, a considerable amount of electricity. Of course, unless this electricity is cheap, profitability is difficult to achieve. This has led to markets searching for the most efficient (from a price perspective) regions globally to set up their mining operations.

Historically, China has been a popular choice as have some areas of Eastern Europe

Now, however, the latest region to enter the fray is Japan.

Specifically, a region in northern Japan where the climate is ideally suited to this sorof mining activity.

The region in question is called Kazuno City and it has a population of approximately 32,000. It is located on a mountainous northern prefecture on Japan’s primary island called the Akita Prefecture.

Here's what Japan Today said about the climate:

“The average yearly temperature of Kazuno City is low, probably contributing to improving the heat exhausting/cooling effects to deal with the heat generated by computers for mining… The city has an abundance of renewable energy including geothermal, hydroelectric and wind powers, and its self-sufficiency rate of electricity exceeds 300%.”

According to reports, one company is already making plans to set up an operation in the region and expectations are that many more will follow, lured in by the potential profits rooted in cheap electricity and a cryptocurrency friendly government environment.

The company in question is called Miner Garage. According to, again, Japan Today:

“At the mining center, 600 computers will be installed at first, and they are expected to realize a mining business worth about 300 million yen per year by dealing with about 10 kinds of virtual currencies such as Bitcoin.”

According to Dr. Garrick Hileman, an economic historian at the University of Cambridge and the London School of Economics, the popularity of Bitcoin in the luxury market as a payment method is increasing at a rapid rate, due to the inefficiencies and high fees of traditional banking systems.

The vast majority of items in the luxury market that include paintings, antiques, and rare collections are priced at tens of thousands of dollars in minimum. Last week, the art industry observed the $450 million sale of an original Da Vinci painting and most of the works presented by Christie’s were priced in the range of $1 million to $100 million.

Traditional banking systems and financial networks charge transaction fees based on the amount of the transaction. For instance, a wire payment of over $100,000 could cost the sender nearly $4,000 in transaction fees, which is impractical and inefficient, especially if the sender settles a large number of payments on a regular basis.

In contrast, Bitcoin transaction fees are dependent on the size of the transactions, not the amount. Hence, a transaction which costs over a million dollars can be settled with a $1 to $2 fee, which is substantially smaller than a bank settlement fee that could rise up to the tens of thousands of dollars.

Swissquote Bank SA upped its cryptocurrency game with the release of an exchange-traded product that will attempt to curb volatility by switching holdings between bitcoin and dollars.

The Switzerland-based online trader called its offering the first actively managed bitcoin certificate. Funds will be shifted between the digital currency and cash based on an algorithm that will use “technical signals” and sentiment expressed on social media to try to forecast the market. Trading will take place on the SIX Swiss Exchange.

Online trading firms, hedge funds and foreign-exchange platforms are launching new bitcoin products to try to get onboard a rally that has seen the biggest cryptocurrency surge eightfold this year. Traders are hungry for ways to hedge downside risk and adopt flexible positions after three separate slumps of more than 25 percent this year and a raft of commentators warning of a bubble.

“Investors are excited about the cryptocurrency but are unnerved by its volatility,” Peter Rosenstreich, the bank’s head of market strategy, said in an interview. “So we tried to build a trading algorithm that’s a protection against downside risks”

Swissquote said in a statement Thursday it will hold the cryptocurrency and a buffer of dollars that ranges from zero to 40 percent of the certificate’s portfolio, depending on its quantitative algorithmic trading strategy. The exposure is limited to bitcoin and cash, minus a 1.5 percent management fee and trading costs, it said.

News related to Crypto / Ethereum Reach Through $400+, All-Time High
« on: November 24, 2017, 12:13:56 AM »
Following a rapid increase this Thursday, Ethereum has broken through a psychologically important threshold of $400, establishing a new all-time high - it hovers around $420 at press time.
Despite some market stagnation caused by the news of the $280 mln Parity wallet hack in early November, the second-most-popular cryptocurrency looks stronger than ever.

This most recent move comes after a similarly positive dynamic on Bitcoin, which has seen it stabilize firmly above $8,000 - it is generally accepted that most cryptocurrencies often follow the direction of BTC price.
