Gambling discussion / Re: Is Gambling a Vice?
« on: February 09, 2024, 04:34:49 PM »
Today, there are battles in different countries about whether gambling should be allowed or criminalized. I think gambling is a vice and should be criminalized because the disadvantages outweigh any potential benefits.
It is, yet, the growth of casinos grows faster these days because it's millions of dollars industry, simple talk, it's business, and it's a huge tax contribution for the government, only a few countries banned gambling in their jurisdiction.
But regarding addiction, it is human nature to become greedy, and it's not just for gambling, there are lots of things people are lured because of that. While it's true that many poor got hooked on gambling, but gambling should not be blamed, people should always be responsible on their actions.

The fact that the betting companies are making millions of dollars and also paying taxes to the government as you have noted is even the main reason the companies are growing on a daily and gaining influence. No matter the argument the companies and government are benefiting more.

On the part of the people, the majority of the people are the ones sustaining these companies because the more you lose the more the companies grow. The few who win millions occasionally give hope to others why gambling shouldn`t be seen as a vice and that is why even when people lose so much they still frown when there are rumors that betting companies will be banned in a country.

For instance, the rumour spreading that betting companies should be banned in Nigeria has generated both positive and negative opinions. It is these diverse contentions that make it even more difficult for the government to ban these companies. Let me add that, gambling per se is not a bad activity it is people who engage in it that give it meaning whether positive or negative.

I remember when my team was in a bad situation, I criticized, but it was all for the good of the team I supported too. Even when my favorite team was doing well, I would occasionally criticize them, even though my voice might not be heard, but it was my concern.

No matter how bad the team looks, I will remain loyal, that's what loyalty is all about. For supporters, we may have heard these words a lot, "don't just be there when they are doing well, but we must still support when they are doing badly". That's what a true supporter is.

It is normal to criticize a team you support and criticisms doesn`t mean you changed or developed hatred for your favourite football club. Generally, constructive criticisms is geared towards improvement and when we criticize our favourite team it is because we wish them to do better. That is passion. When your favourite team is winning it brings joy in the mind of fans and vice versa.

Yes, even when someone gambles for fun they must have limits so that the gambling will not affect their financial condition. When a gambler does not set limits on their gambling activities, it means they will only gamble according to their pleasure - they don't care about how much money they will/have gambled. And this could lead to more serious cases such as gambling addiction which will worsen their mental condition.
Not only affects financial condition but also we have wasted a lot of time and even have nothing left for our loved ones. Health issues is also one that we are taking into consideration when talking about gambling addiction. Limits should always be there in everything we do in our gambling activities.

In every aspect of life we should always have limits because if we don't, then for sure we will suffer either us or our loved ones. Most of the issues you'll encounter in gambling are financial, as you'll be in debt if you can't control yourself, and that will also affect your relationships with your family and others like health, etc. That is the start of you'll be ruining your life.

The importance of having limits in human endeavour cannot be overemphasized. When there is a limit in gambling it becomes difficult to run into gambling-related problems. People see gambling as something normal and they feel they are free to exit from it anything but then we have heard stories of rich men and women who went broke due to their gambling addiction. This is why we should be very moderate with the amount utilized for gambling.

Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling Makes Rich
« on: February 09, 2024, 03:31:19 PM »
I don't think that gambling have made more millionaires more than it has made people poor. There's no doubt that people could miraculously hit the jackpot but what is the percentage of people that gets rich through this means? Very minimal I think.

The number of people who wish and think that they will become very rich through gambling is increasing and that is the reason why there is gambling addiction.

Yeah true! complaints and agony brought by gambling made it impossible to become rich through gambling. Even though people are becoming rich, the question is how many are making money compared to the majority crying every day? A win by one person doesn`t change the narrative that gambling is not a reliable source of income. For instance, if a person drives recklessly and nothing happened to him doesn`t mean reckless driving is good. This is similar to gambling.

Sometimes, the problem is not about making money through gambling but the ability to sustain the winning and even grow bigger. Experience showed that any money earned through gambling always end up in the accounts of the betting companies, leaving the bettor impoverished and frustrated.

Gambling discussion / Re: AFCON 2024 Discussion thread
« on: February 09, 2024, 11:58:35 AM »
Just like I expected, Nigeria vs Ivory Coast are in the final of AFCON and I am betting on host as underdogs to take the trophy.
They made so many changes during this competition, they even changed the coach, but with support of supporters in full stadium I think they can win.
Maybe it is going to be in extra time or penalties, but Ivory Coast it is for me.

The host nations are always the favourites to win the trophy once they reach the finals. Home advantage and favouritism, but with the help of VAR, all might change for the better. Nigeria is a better team than Ivory Coast, but the finals are usually unpredictable. The Ivorians are riding the best losers luck, which I hope does not carry over to the finals. The young Nigeria team deserves it; we're perhaps the best team in the tournament, and are undefeated with only two goals conceded.

Both teams deserve it. Both have fought to get to the finals. It has been moments of suspense and sweat for both teams. No doubt, Nigeria have been superb in the tournament and Ivory Coast were lucky to have advanced as best losers but we have seen improvement in their games afterwards. Even though I am rooting for Nigeria to win, I cannot pay deaf ears to the reality of football; anything can happen. Remember, the race is not for the swift...but time and chance happened to them all. The team who is on form on Sunday 11, 2023 will likely emerge as the winner. All I can say is GO Naija!

The possibilities of winning or losing are always 50-50 in any case whether you visit a seer or someone else for guidance or result. If you win, they will say, "see I told ya" and if you lose, "you didn't follow what I said. You did this and that wrong and that's why this happened". It's all part of scams. Don't fall for it.

Your luck depends on you. The luck is never predictable. If it happens, it happens. No one knows the actual outcome when it involves luck. It is always 50/50 chance. This may happen or this may not happen. I don't believe in all this. You are the one who makes all the decision and your luck decides what may happen.

You`ve said the reality. No one can guarantee anyone 100% winning and so we shouldn`t be tricked into believing that a seer can give us winning games. A lot of person pray before making predictions. Some even make so many promises to God that they will fulfill if they win. Some have done series of sacrifices but did not win at the end. No one knows the outcome of a game and so you can only try and pray to be lucky.

The photo justifies that nobody can give you winning games.

Everything has a limit, when someone says they gamble for fun but they don't know the limit, then what is the difference with someone gambling because of their addiction? sometimes people misinterpret this, it doesn't mean gambling for fun without making certain limits.

I think the thin line lies in the ability to know when to stop as you have noted no matter the aim of gambling. If you gamble for fun you lose money, if you gamble to make extra income, you still lose money but then knowing when you are exceeding boundaries is what should matter most in the life of a gambler.

People who gamble for fun are not immune from losing and people's reactions when they lose differ because humans are different too. When you start having the powerful need to gamble with a larger amount of money or having a feeling of restlessness or irritability when you gamble should be enough signs that you are being manipulated into becoming and addict and that is a time to take a pause.

Gambling discussion / Re: How can you cure a gambling addict?
« on: February 09, 2024, 11:03:25 AM »
Bringing a gambling addict back to a normal life Although there is a lot of difficulty, nothing is impossible if the right effort is made then it is definitely possible to bring a gambling addict back to a normal life. First, be friendly with the gambling addict. He should always be gently talked to in such a way that gambling is not good and can destroy a man very quickly. One should always associate with him in such a way that he is always smiling and talking to everyone in a cheerful manner. A gambling addict should be more passionate about sports if he is always happy and plays sports for fun then he can easily get back to normal life. Also for a gambler gambling should be taken as entertainment and never used outside of entertainment. Always gamble with a fixed budget and never gamble above the specified budget. If a gambler can follow all these rules then he will not be addicted to gambling.

I`m not sure all these things can help an addict. Let's understand that people who became addicted have failed to set and stick to a budget. You cannot talk to an addict about budget and he acts on it because he already has an impulse disorder meaning that he is controlled by his impulse and not reasoning.

Some addicts don`t have behavioral problems so they act friendly and live a normal life but within them, they are not happy. Addiction is not made obvious immediately and before it is known a lot of harm might have been done already. This is like helping someone with a mental disorder in fact to me, an addict has a mental disorder so talking to him gently is good but not capable of changing anything. What assurance that he will follow the advice when you leave?

I think there are more effective and resulting ways of helping an addict.

Therefore, if you want to stop, there are several things you must pay attention to to support it:
- Strong personal intentions
- Yan's family is fully supportive
- Rehabilitation
- Special treatment
- Significant monitoring
This won't be easy to do, so you have to get help from other parties.

I support the above measures. Strong personal intention is vital because you can`t fix something you don`t understand. To eliminate gambling addiction you must admit that you have a gambling problem. Stop denying and start seeing the negative effect gambling has on your life. Now that have recognized the problem, you can seek support from family. Then other measures as identified should be followed.

Gambling discussion / Re: Lucky in gambling, not in business.
« on: February 09, 2024, 09:01:22 AM »
Business acumen is different though, maybe small percentage could be viewed as luck, like establishing your business at the right place and right time and other factor.

You need a feasibility study to know all that and not luck. Luck has nothing to do with business. You need to learn and apply certain principles and ethics to excel in business but it is not so in gambling.

In gambling, no matter the research carried out on a particular game, winning is still not guaranteed because most times there are factors that affect the outcome of a game like in sports betting that may not be foreseen. So, there is luck in gambling but it is not so in business.

Gambling discussion / Re: Do you gamble regularly?
« on: February 09, 2024, 04:57:49 AM »
Do you gamble regularly or every day a week or two or three days a week?
Do you still stick with gambling or have you stopped yourself from it?
Seeing my campus friends who gamble online almost every day seems very scary because every day they gamble continuously and ignore their college assignments.
My campus friends who gamble are not just one or two people but more than 3 friends and many even play online gambling on their own smartphones.

Gambling is their right and I have no obligation to forbid them from gambling, but it would be better if they didn't gamble on campus because it's unethical.
The campus is a place to study and gain knowledge, but my friends have turned the campus into a place for online gambling and most of it is done in the canteen when taking a break from studying.

I can relate to this. It is more painful when you consider that most college students skip classes because of gambling. Well, I am not surprised that is what addiction is capable of doing to a college gambler. They gamble with money meant for school fees, textbooks, and feeding.

In the long run, this makes them easily frustrated when they lose and then affects their academics. Gambling regularly is dangerous for a college student due to the mental and emotional stress it can create for the gambler coupled with the natural stress which comes by virtue of being a student.

if you are successful in gambling, it could mean that you are not skilled or fortunate enough to handle a business. Alternatively, if you excel in business, it may suggest that you are not lucky enough to win at gambling.

I disagree with this. Luck can fall on anybody whether you are business-inclined or not. That is why it is called luck. Being successful in business has nothing to do with business management skills. There are cases of businessmen who were lucky to win the jackpot. Gerald Muswagon and Brad Duke are examples.

Gerald Muswagon was a Canadian businessman who won a $10 million jackpot in 1998. Brad Juke is a businessman from the United States who won a 220 million dollar jackpot in 2005. In Nigeria, Twitter influencers and businessmen like Mr Bankz, Mr Bayo, Mayor of Ekiti, and even a business masquerades like E-money and Kcee are still gambling and winning.

The above exceptions made it clear that there is no correlation between being successful in gambling and one`s ability to manage a business.

Gambling discussion / Is Gambling for Fun a Reality or an Expression?
« on: February 07, 2024, 08:18:21 AM »
Personal experience shows that people have different reasons why they gamble. Some to make extra cash and others for charity, entertainment and even for fun. I have taken time to look at the nature of gambling and also read stories of people who initially gamble for fun but later got ruined by gambling. This propelled that inquisitive to know if it is possible to gamble for fun or if we make that expression to fake our mind into believing that we are not gambling for the wrong reason.

I came across a story of a gambler online who noted that he was gambling for fun. On weekends he hosts a Poker game at his home in which guests pony up hundreds of dollars to play with the winner taking home a few thousand dollars. In addition, he bets on whatever sporting events are in season, plays the lotto/numbers regularly and takes a yearly vacation to a gambling town. When asked why he gambles so much, he replies "it is for fun, exciting and I hope to win big". Due to his gambling, he became chronically short on money and his children often go without new clothes, shoes and other basic needs.

Sometimes gambling can go from a fun, harmless diversion to an unhealthy obsession with serious consequences like impulse-control disorder. Impulse-control disorder manifests in a way that you can`t control the impulse to gamble even when you know that the odds are against you or you can`t afford to lose.

Do you think you can gamble for fun without consequences?

Gambling discussion / Is Gambling a Vice?

Today, there are battles in different countries about whether gambling should be allowed or criminalized. I think gambling is a vice and should be criminalized because the disadvantages outweigh any potential benefits. Gambling addicts are known to commit crimes to pay debts or have mood disorder which most time causes violence and strain in relationships. Gambling increases poverty as the poor are the most likely to gamble away what little money they have. The lure of big money has pushed many gamblers to steal. Some have even committed suicide causing indelible pains in the minds of others.

I will share some hilarious photos which depict that gambling is taking a toll on society.

Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling Makes Rich
« on: February 06, 2024, 09:52:42 AM »
That kind of scenario is one in a million, just like someone winning in a lotto.

But the general perception that gambling can make someone rich is somewhat misleading. Though few people are making fortunes out of gambling but millions are also going broke and families broken because of gambling.

So, for me saying gambling can makes us rich is wrong.

It may not be misleading to say that gambling is capable of making someone rich because we hear and see people making millions from it. However, gambling can not reliably make someone rich because the outcome is always uncertain. The odds are typically sacked against the player and so, the house always has an edge.

Well, it is not proper to promote the idea that gambling makes people rich since majority of the gamblers do not amass wealth from gambling and so holding that gambling makes rich can be problematic and even create unrealistic expectations in the mind of the gambler which can result in emotional and financial damage.

A diehard football fan will always stick to his club no matter the performance of the club. It is only a plastic fan who changes football clubs. I plastic fan is a person who is always in the winning team. He doesn`t have a favorite football team. His loyalty depends on the performance of the team. It is only such a fan that can easily change a football club.

In my opinion, it is impossible to change a football club because of the genuine love for the club. Remember as a fan you have no benefit accrue to you for supporting the football club and so your loyalty is propelled by your genuine love for the club. But this can be different if the loyalty is not for the club but for a player. Sometimes people support a club because of a particular player and if this is the case, when such a player changes football club, fan loyalty also changes because his love is not for the club but for the player.

I have a friend who was a Manchester United fan when Christiano Ronaldo was still in the club but then switched loyalty and started supporting Real Madrid when Ronaldo moved to the club. I also have a friend who lost interest in Barcelona when Lionel Messi left the club.

So, the possibility or impossibility depends on the reason for supporting the club.
