Forum related / Re: What subforums should be removed ?
« on: January 19, 2024, 02:14:44 PM »
Here are my short suggestions,

1. "Basic questions about this forum" could be either removed or moved under "Forum related".
2. I find topic created on "Basic Questions about Cryptos" and "Further Education" very similar. IMO it should be merged where one of them is removed.
3. "Bitcoin Gold" should be removed since it has no activity since 2022 (i exclude 3 necroposting). I also created a new thread asking whether BTG is dying (with some data), but there's no reply so far.

Taproot development on the bitcoin network allowed developers to create tokens and release them on the Bitcoin network which have been identified as BRC-20 tokens.

That's not true. BRC-20 which created with Ordinals use witness data which have 10000 bytes for SegWit and no bytes limit for Taproot[1]. And before SegWit exist, USDT token already exist on Bitcoin.

BRC-20 token developers mint their tokens on the network but they are using the same Bitcoin network.

Actually anyone with wallet which support BRC-20 and willing to pay some TX fee can mint BRC-20 based token, even when they're not the one who deploy that[2].

Bitcoin Forum / Re: Mempool Observer - Discussion about Bitcoin Fees
« on: January 19, 2024, 01:30:53 PM »
Maybe you can include additional fees in your bitcoindata mempool observer for Liquid network and L-BTC:
https://liquid.network/

If the goal is to promote Liquid, that's fine. But otherwise i don't think it's very useful since that website shows most blocks is almost empty. It means people could just set 0.1 sat/vB (which is minimum fee rate[1]). Although as reminder Liquid use Confidential Transaction which leads to bigger transaction size[2].

Very soon most BTC nodes will adopt the full-rbf feature, and that means you will be able to replace a tx with a new one, even if the tx was not originally rbf-enabled.

I wouldn't say it's very soon when Bitcoin Core 26.0 (current latest version) still disable full RBF by default[1]. And when Bitcoin Core makes it enabled by default, we still have to wait until node owner/operator update their software.

The storing of seed phrase on a piece of paper is the common and most popular method of storage because it very easy and does not attract any cost. Occasionally, you sound be checking it and if at any point you see that the ink is fading out, rewrite it on another piece of paper. Also, you shouldn't have multiple backups. There's no need to stress yourself about the metallic steel plate, I'd only suggest it if you live in an environment where natural disaster is prevalent.
Why is it not necessary to have multiple backups? This reduces the likelihood of losing access to your wallet if the seed-phrase is lost. We don't have natural disasters, but I think you need to make sure you have access to your wallet in the most unforeseen situations.

I disagree with @Sokani suggestion. But i guess he imply it'll increase risk it found by other people or you need to spend time to verify and replace the backup (if the backup no longer in good condition).

Forum related / Re: I just found out I cannot delete my post
« on: January 19, 2024, 11:01:36 AM »
Deleting posts is available on all forums I ever used (not only related with bitcoin), and this is good feature for privacy.

Most forums I ever communicated on don't allow nor to delete any posts nor to edit posts after some short period of time (10-60 minutes). The idea of what is gone to the history remains the same is something usual for many forums. I'd say that crypto forums with these features are something unusual.

Looks like our experience are difference. Many forums i've used which use "modern" software (e.g. Discourse) or has more modern UI let user delete or edit post with little limitation. Although i guess it's partially because they decide to comply with GDPR or other privacy laws.

--snip--

Name me please wallet that wasnt hacked or had no issues. I think it is matter of time when other wallet users will lose keys. People seems to complain less about Trezor. It is a matter of time when it will get issues also. Hackers dont sit still every day, they develop their methods and technologies also.

I didn't say anything about hardware wallet that was never hacked or had no issue. My point was there are few hardware wallet not worth recommending/mentioning.

If you own old working smartphone you can use it like hardware wallet and you dont have to buy something new.
Just reset your phone, install mobile wallet, remove sim card and turn off internet connection.
Now you have better security for free without spending more money, this is crypto recycle  ;D

It's nice idea, although make sure wallet software you choose have feature for offline/airgapped wallet. At bare minimum. it should able to sign unsigned transaction.

I would suggest to buy any hardware wallet that is affordable. Reason is simple - all of them have encryptions and security technology. Some is better, some is not. Each have its own  benefits. But having an extra level of security than simply having password is always better than having no extra security at all. It will save user from a default hacker, but if an elite will hunt for your funds, then he will get you no matter when. So basically all the hardware wallets differ only by design, maybe with special app. So I would get any that I can buy and be happy. Anyway, $20 or $220 worth wallet does the same, it stores crypto.

Please don't use term "any". Recently we know it's possible to extract private key from Ledger[1]. Bitfi (also called John McAfee hardware wallet) also got hacked many times[2]. But otherwise i agree with you.

Honestly, I prefer users not be able to delete their posts. Look at the mess Ratimov created when he deleted multiple topics on the other forum trying to remove proof he was an idiot. Might even be good if users couldn't edit to a certain extent.

Have you checked link mentioned by @Jokers? It state you can unlock feature to delete post/thread if you're willing to spend some money. So users like Ratimov (from Bitcointalk) could pay a bit of money and abuse chosen feature. Although from reading that thread and related discussion thread, it's not clear whether moderator/admin would reverse such action manually.

I do not know if there is anyone scraping forum data, and if there is no bot doing so, it is best to assume that everything you post has been recorded by someone.
Deleting the post will not change much, but it would be good if this feature was available to a specific rank, such as Mythical, instead of being a paid feature.

Search engine scrape forum data so it can be shown on relevant search result. In addition, it's known Google keep older version of certain web page through feature called "Google Cache".

Incentivised Posting / Shill / Re: Exploring Rapid Earnings via Staking!
« on: January 18, 2024, 12:32:33 PM »
I'm a recent member of this forum and stumbled upon your post. I want to share something special with you. A few days ago, I came across a platform on the TON blockchain known as TonUP. They're currently hosting a launchpool for the Tontogather (TOT) project. What makes it exciting is that TOT is already listed on Stonfi DEX. Plus, you have the flexibility to claim the TOT tokens you've farmed from the TonUP launchpool at any time, with an impressive APY exceeding 700%!

Upon discovering your recommendation, I chose to stake 316 UP tokens, resulting in some earnings. Following that, I claimed and sold the tokens. Much appreciated, mate, for the advice! If you encounter similar projects in the future, please keep us updated.

As a reminder, high reward is equal with high risk. 700% APY claim seems shady to me and i advice you to reconsider your decision. And it seems you're new to cryptocurrency, you probably want something less risky such as buying ETH and stake it on non-custodial pool (it means only you can move your ETH) such as ETHpool.

Cryptocurrency discussions / Re: KYC bad decision?
« on: January 18, 2024, 11:21:35 AM »
Yes, it's definitely risky. It's hard to even know whether exchange misuse our personal data and even harder to sue them. That's why i only use very few services which require KYC.
Even the few that you use does not guarantee the safety of your information, there’s a probability that one of those few that you use might have been compromised.

That's true, using few service (which require KYC) only reduce the risk. Besides, some people occasionally need fiat due to various reason.

I did kyc for two exchanges before I join a forum (bitcoinatalk) and got to know about the risk associated with kyc – how my identity could be stolen and the rest… if the info had gotten to me before I made that decision of verifying my account I would have just gone for DEX, because I don’t trade large volume so the liquidity in dexs should have been enough for me.

DEX is good alternative to CEX, although some trading pairs have little or no volume. As for trading pair on DEX which use fiat, Bisq[1] shows only EUR, USD and BRL have volume above $100K in last 7 days.

Monero Forum / Re: Why Monero(XMR) is so popular
« on: January 17, 2024, 01:30:09 PM »
2. CPU only mining - Monero is a CPU mining coin. So you wouldn't need expensive mining rigs to mine it. The Random-x algorithm is specifically made for CPU mining. That's what I believe is the major reason for its popularity.

While it's true, technically it's possible to mine Monero at GPU. Although you'll mine at loss.

Monero is number one privacy coin all crypto users agree with this statement. It has a unique position in the crypto market. So lot of users believe in this coin also this is popular in dark web for privacy transactions.

Except CoinDesk stated the popularity isn't limited on dark web or drugs.

“It is a speculative value store of value,” he continued. “Is it being used as a payment anywhere? Are we buying cups of coffee with it? Not really. The only payment mechanism it’s being used for in a primary sense is illicit activity.”

What a liar, there are some service which accept Bitcoin as payment method. I've bought few goods (such as VPN) using Bitcoin as well.

I did not expect the court to use OP_Return to notify the owner of the address of the importance of appearing for the lawsuit, but it is revolutionary. Will OP_Return be used in the future as a means of sending legal data to Bitcoin addresses that no one knows anything about?

Bitcoin node only broadcast transaction with single OP_RETURN which has size 80 bytes or less. So if that happens, i think they'll include download link instead.

I found this part of the article funny

However, not all agree on the validity of this procedure. Peter Todd, a Bitcoin Core developer, declared:
This is an awful way of serving someone. I don’t know of any wallets that display OP_Return info on incoming transactions.
https://news.bitcoin.com/court-uses-bitcoin-blockchain-for-legal-summons-revolutionizing-defendant-notification/

Some block explorers show OP_Return value and therefore do not require wallets to see such messages.

But unless people have habit of checking their address using explorer rather than opening their wallet  (whether watch-only wallet or wallet which contain pirvate key), they wouldn't realize one of their transaction has OP_RETURN.

Using paid password manager: It is true that it has features such as encryption and others, but you still depend on a third party, and once it is hacked, all your money and accounts can be accessed, use opensource self-hosted one.
I agree. Cryptocurrency enthusiasts prioritize open source stuffs so here you go. If you know other open source ones, please help me to make the list bigger.

How about KeePassXC? It has more feature than KeePass[1] with native Linux/Mac OS support.
