Bitcoin price falls after Fed shifts interest rate hikes forward amid inflation fears

Bitcoin dropped closer to a key support level and the Dow and the S&P 500 pulled back after the Federal Reserve moved forward its plan for 2 interest rate hikes in 2023.

Bitcoin (BTC) price extended its losses shortly after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell announced that the Fed would move forward its timeline and schedule two interest rate hikes in 2023.

Bitcoin price was already seeing weakness in the early trading hours after losing the $40,000 level to mark an intra-day low at $38,300. The Dow and S&P 500 also pulled back 0.77% and 0.54% respectively.

The decision comes as economists worry about rising inflation in the United States and Powell said that the Fed had raised its inflation expectation from 2.4% to 3.4%. While Powell described the current inflation spike as “transitory”, consumer prices are at a 13 year high and analysts worry that rising inflation will impact the post-covid economic recovery.

Dünya Bankası, El Salvador'un Bitcoin'i yasal para birimi olarak kullanmaya geçiş sürecine yardım talebini reddetti.

World Bank refuses El Salvador's request for help on BTC transition

The World Bank has refused El Salvador’s request for help on the country’s transition to adopting Bitcoin as legal tender.

It cited issues with Bitcoin’s environmental impact and transparency as reasons why it will not support El Salvador move to adopt Bitcoin as an officially accepted currency .

"While the government did approach us for assistance on Bitcoin, this is not something the World Bank can support given the environmental and transparency shortcomings, " a World Bank spokesperson said.

The World Bank did note however that it can help El Salvador in other ways, including “currency transparency and regulatory processes."

Earlier on Wednesday, Salvadoran Finance Minister Alejandro Zelaya said the Central America country had sought technical assistance from Banco Mundial (the World Bank).

"I want to announce that we have requested technical assistance from @BancoMundial, so that like @BCIE_Org, they can accompany El Salvador in the implementation and regularization of #Bitcoin as legal tender."
Prominent Bitcoiners weren’t pleased with the World Bank's refusal, but nor were they particularly surprised.

Bitcoin proponent Anthony Pompliano tweeted in response to the news that the “World Bank hasn’t figured out how to make money off Bitcoin.”

Samson Mow the CSO of blockchain development firm Blockstream, and creator of blockchain game Infinite Fleet, was irritated by the news — and called for The World Bank to be made obsolete.

Steve Hanke warns BTC could 'completely collapse the economy' of El Salvador

Steve Hanke, a professor of applied economics at Johns Hopkins University, has warned that El Salvador’s recent adoption of Bitcoin (BTC) as legal tender has the potential to “completely collapse the economy.”

Steve Hanke served as a senior economist under President Ronald Reagan administration from 1981 to 1982. Hanke has previously described BTC as a speculative asset “with a fundamental value of zero,” and in April the 78-year-old tweeted “cryptocurrencies are the future of money. Bitcoin is not.”

Speaking with streaming financial news provider Kitco News on June 15, the university professor noted that BTC hodlers from regions such as Russia and China could now target El Salvador to cash out their holdings — essentially draining the country of its U.S. dollars:

“It has the potential to completely collapse the economy because all the dollars in El Salvador could be vacuumed up and there'd be no money in the country. They don't have a domestic currency. ”
During the interview, the economist described the elected representatives in El Salvador who voted in favor of president Nayib Bukele’s Bitcoin law as “in a word, stupid,” and questioned how BTC could function as a legal tender in day to day transactions, in a country where most citizens rely on cash.

“You're not going to pay for your taxi ride with a Bitcoin. It's ridiculous [...] You've got 70 percent of the people in El Salvador don't even have bank accounts,” he said.

On June 11, JPMorgan echoed similar sentiments but in more measured language, with the firm stating in a client note that it was difficult to see any “tangible economic benefits associated with adopting Bitcoin as a second form of legal tender, and it may imperil negotiations with the IMF. ”

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) doesn’t share this view however and stated yesterday that El Salvador’s adoption of BTC is innovative and “creates many spaces and opportunities. ”

The multinational bank also revealed that it will be forming a technical advisory group to aid El Salvador in its transition to using Bitcoin as legal tender.

Professor Hanke speculated that “dark forces are clearly behind this” in El Salvador, who want to use Bitcoin to get their hands on U.S. dollars.

The economist also described remittances across borders in Bitcoin as “nonsensical,” as he thinks the asset will need to be converted instantly to dollars to be able to use it.

“If grandma is down in El Salvador is waiting for her remittances and you want to send Bitcoin like that it’s fine, but what does she do? She has to go to the ATM to get dollars because that's the only way you can buy something,” Hanke said. However, businesses in El Salvador will be mandated to accept Bitcoin.

An article in Foreign Policy by trenchant Bitcoin critic David Gerard, author of the book Attack of the 50 Foot Blockchain speculated that as El Salvador can’t print U.S. dollars, its adoption of BTC may be part of a move to source U.S. dollar liquidity from its citizens to pay back foreign debts.

Following massive BTC purchase announcement, MicroStrategy says it may sell up to $1B in stock

The same day business intelligence firm MicroStrategy announced it would use $488 million from the proceeds of a private offering sale to buy Bitcoin, the company said it may also sell up to $1 billion of its stock for the same reason.

In a Monday S-3 filing for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, MicroStrategy said it would be launching an “at the market” securities offering which would allow it to sell up to $1 billion of its Class A Common stock over time. The firm said it intended to use the proceeds from the offering “for general corporate purposes, including the acquisition of Bitcoin.”

“Bitcoin does not pay interest or other returns and so ability to generate a return on investment from the net proceeds from this offering will depend on whether there is appreciation in the value of Bitcoin following our purchases of Bitcoin with the net proceeds from this offering,” said the filing. “Future fluctuations in Bitcoin trading prices may result in our converting Bitcoin purchased with the net proceeds from this offering into cash with a value substantially below the net proceeds from this offering.”

According to the SEC filing, MicroStrategy held 92,079 Bitcoin (BTC) — roughly $3.7 billion at the time of publication — as of June 4, with the company saying today it intended to purchase an additional $488 million in the cryptocurrency. The filing shows MicroStrategy purchased its existing holdings at an average BTC price of $24,450, meaning that the company has seen the value of its crypto increase by almost $1.5 billion.

Should the firm use the entirety of the $1 billion proceeds to invest in Bitcoin again, it would add roughly 25,000 coins to its coffers at the current value of $40,150. The price of the crypto asset has risen by more than 8.8% in the last 24 hours.

‘Bitcoin is the king of crypto and it’s here to stay’ says eToro CEO

While countries like El Salvador have welcomed Bitcoin with open arms, other regions are pushing to legally ban the digital currency. Although this may be, some industry experts believe that Bitcoin (BTC) is here to stay — for good.

For example, during an exclusive interview at Bitcoin 2021 in Miami, Yoni Assia, CEO of eToro, told Cointelegraph that he considers Bitcoin to be the “king of crypto,” noting that the most popular digital currency is here to stay:

“I'll be surprised if we don't see a significant rise in the price of Bitcoin over the next three to five years, as there are still 5 billion people in the world that basically don't have good local currency.”
Yet in order for this dream to become a reality, Guy Hirsch, managing director of eToro U.S., told Cointelegraph that people need to believe in the morality of decentralizing money:

“I think that the moral case for Bitcoin and teaching people that it is the right thing to do is to basically separate state and money. It will ultimately create that vision that we all aspire for.”
Regulations: Bridging the old world with the new world
In order to prepare for a decentralized future, Assia mentioned that eToro is building a bridge between traditional finance and the crypto industry. As such, Assia explained that the combination of crypto assets and equities is important. “The majority of our clients trade both cryptocurrencies as well as stocks in the platform. I think that's definitely a trend that we'll see continuing in the future,” he said.

Assia further mentioned that it’s good to see more institutions entering the crypto space, especially when it comes to innovating within decentralized finance, or DeFi:

“DeFi a bit of a Wild West right now. No regulation, no real financial institutions, but a lot of amazing innovation. I think we're going to see a lot of that innovation going into traditional or regulated financial institutions, centralized companies, to be able to offer that innovation directly to consumers.”
Moreover, Assia mentioned that he thinks there will be a transfer of over $100 trillion dollars over the next 10 years into native digital assets. He noted this will be spurred by the notion that nearly all financial assets will eventually be incorporated into blockchain networks moving forward.

Texas regulator allows state-chartered banks to hold Bitcoin

A Texas state regulator has officially affirmed that Texas state-chartered banks are allowed to store cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) for their customers.

The Texas Department of Banking, a state regulatory agency chartering state banks and supervising financial services, issued a notice on Thursday stating that local banks are permitted to provide crypto services in the state.

The agency noted that Texas banks “may provide customers with virtual currency custody services, so long as the bank has adequate protocols in place to effectively manage the risks and comply with applicable law.”

The regulator briefly explained cryptocurrencies, stressing that digital currencies do not exist in a physical form, but on a blockchain, and thus require the owner to hold private keys to access them. The authority further stated that banks can store crypto on customers’ behalf, either by keeping copies of the customer’s private keys or holding the assets directly in the bank’s custody by creating new private keys held by the bank.

“As with the method of custody services, several secure storage options are available to the bank, each of which has distinctive characteristics pertaining to level of security and accessibility. The bank will have to determine which storage option best fits the circumstances,” the agency wrote.

The department also mentioned that the bank should confirm the existence of adequate coverage with its insurance carrier as a measure to protect its crypto holdings.

The regulatory notice comes shortly after members of the Texas House of Representatives passed a bill to recognize cryptocurrencies under commercial law last month. Other jurisdictions in the United States, such as Wyoming and Nebraska, have been actively embracing crypto custody services by state-chartered banks, with Wyoming chartering Kraken exchange as its first crypto bank last September. Federally chartered banks also received authorization for providing crypto custody services in July 2020.

12 Haziran 2021 Cumartesi günü itibarıyla CoinGecko verileri, kripto para ekosisteminde toplam coin adedini 7885 şeklinde gösteriyor. Verilerde ayrıca, aktif olarak işlem gören kripto para borsası adedi ise 475 olarak açıklanmış.

Kripto para ekosisteminin en büyük ismi konumunda bulunan Bitcoin, toplam piyasa değeri açısından da önde yer alıyor.

Kripto para piyasasının toplam değeri 1.535.227.580.092$ dolar olarak hesaplanıyor. 24 saatlik işlem hacmi 129.124.936.467$ dolar şeklinde kaydedildi.

12 Haziran 2021 Cumartesi sabahı itibarıyla Ethereum ağındaki Gas ücretleri 10 gwei olarak açıklandı.

Türkler 2020'de Bitcoin'den 300 milyon dolar kazandı

2020 kripto para yatırımcılarının yüksek kazançlar elde ettiği bir yıl oldu. 2020'ye 7.100 dolar civarında giren Bitcoin yüzde 307'lik yükselişle yıl sonunda 28.900 dolara ulaştı.

Blockchain odaklı yazılım firması Chainalysis bu yükselişler yaşanırken yatırımcıların miktar olarak ne kadar kazanç elde ettiğini ülkelere göre hesapladı. Firma tarafından yayımlanan verilere göre geçtiğimiz yıl Bitcoin'den en çok kazancı 4.1 milyar dolar ile ABD vatandaşları elde etti. Bu ülkeyi 1.1 milyar dolar ile Çin ve 900 milyon dolar ile Japonya takip etti.

EKONOMİK BÜYÜKLÜĞÜNE GÖRE YÜKSEK
Türkiye'den yatırımcıların 2020'de Bitcoin'den elde ettikleri getiri ise 300 milyon doları buldu. Türkiye getiri bakımından 14. sırada yer aldı. Chainalysis tarafından yapılan açıklamada Türkiye'nin dünyanın en büyük 25. ekonomisi olduğuna dikkat çekilerek Bitcoin piyasasındaki ağırlığının ekonomik büyüklüğüne göre yüksek olduğu belirtildi.

Burada bahsedilen getiriler realize edilmiş kârları kapsıyor. Yani yatırımcı sadece Bitcoin'ini satıp kârını cebine koyduysa bu rakam veriye dahil ediliyor. Yatırımcıların ellerinde tutmaya devam ettikleri değeri artan kripto varlıklar hesaba dahil edilmiyor.

Hollandalı yetkili Bitcoin'in tamamen yasaklanmasını istedi

Bitcoin (BTC) resmi para birimi olarak El Salvador'da kabul edilirken, Hollandalı yetkililer kripto para birimini yasaklama çağrısında bulundu.

Ekonomik İşler ve İklim Politikası Bakanlığı bünyesindeki Hollanda Ekonomik Analiz Bürosu direktörü Pieter Hasekamp, "Hollanda Bitcoin'i yasaklamalı" başlıklı bir makale yayımladı.

Hasekamp, makalenin başlığına uygun olarak, Hollanda hükümetinin Bitcoin madenciliği, alım satımı ve saklanması konusunda derhal yasak getirmesi gerektiğine dair geniş bir liste sıraladı. Yetkiliye göre bu durum, fiyatın düşmesine neden olabilir, çünkü Bitcoin "gerçek bir değere sahip değil ve yalnızca diğer insanlar kabul edebildiği için değerli."

Yönetici, kripto paraların hesap birimi, ödeme aracı ve değer saklama aracı olan paranın üç işlevinden hiçbirini yerine getiremeyeceğini savunarak, ortak kripto karşıtı genel görüşe destek verdi. Ayrıca güvenlik endişeleri, dolandırıcılık ve sahtekarlık riskleri gibi diğer yaygın Bitcoin karşıtı argümanlara da atıfta bulunarak kripto paranın suç unsurlarının tercih ettiği bir araç olduğunu savundu.

Hasekamp, Hollanda'nın son yıllarda "kripto para popülerliğini frenlemek" için hareket eden ülkelerin gerisinde kaldığını söyledi. "Hollandalı düzenleyiciler, alım satım platformlarının denetimini sıkılaştırmaya çalıştı, ancak pek başarılı olamadı. Merkezi Planlama Bürosu, 2018'de kripto para alım satım işlemlerinin risklerine dikkat çekti, ancak daha katı düzenlemenin henüz gerekli olmadığı sonucuna vardı" diye yazdı.

Hasekamp makalesinde, aşırı değerli para biriminin veya "kötü paranın" yasal olarak düşük değerli para birimini veya "iyi parayı" dolaşımdan çıkarma eğiliminde olduğunu belirten bir para ilkesi olan Gresham yasasına vurgu yaptı. Bitcoin'e "kötü para" diyen Hasekamp, Gresham yasasının Bitcoin ile tam tersi şekilde çalışabileceğini savundu:

"Kripto para birimleri, 'kötü para'nın tüm özelliklerini gösteriyor: belirsiz köken, belirsiz değerleme, üstü kapalı alım satım uygulamaları […] Gresham'ın yasası geri mi döndü? Hayır, aksine. Normal ödeme işlemlerinde kripto para kullanılmaz. […] Kötü para tedavülden kalkıyor çünkü artık kimse onu kabul etmek istemiyor."
