With its volatile socio-political environment, South African residents are increasingly turning to cryptocurrencies as a way around the uncertain economic climate. According to Business Insider, international Retail Company, Spar, is looking to pave the way for easier mainstream adoption by installing a cryptocurrency ATM in Johannesburg.

The ATM will be installed at Northwold Spar in the country’s biggest city this week and will support multiple virtual currencies, including Dash, Ethereum, Bitcoin, and others. Users will be able to exchange cash for cryptocurrencies without the need of a bank account.

Jack Ma, founder and executive chair of E-Commerce giant Alibaba has reiterated his stance on bitcoin, saying there is a bubble in the world’s most popular cryptocurrency even as he sounded bullish on the underlying technology, blockchain.

Speaking during the 2nd World Intelligence conference held in Tianjin china, Jack Ma said that he strongly believes that bitcoin is a bubble, but blockchain is not.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has published its ranking of blockchain networks, evaluated according to three criteria: technology, application and innovation.

The list rates types of projects in the cryptocurrency sector and puts Ethereum at the top (not very surprisrising as ETH is considered the mother of tokens). Steem came in as second followed by Lisk, NEO and Komodo. However, the most surprising aspect of the aspect of the ratings was that Bitcoin, the first blockchain project was placed at the 13th position.

The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) is looking to utilize blockchain technology for lending financial derivatives to investors and firms.

The banking arm of Japanese financial giant Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) is planning to test its own cryptocurrency as early as 2019, according to a report from local news outlet NHK.

MUFG is reportedly planning a large-scale trial involving nearly 100,000 account holders. Users would be able to use the digital token to make payments at restaurants, convenience stores and other shops, as well as make transfers to the accounts of other participants.

Telecom giants Nokia is collaborating with blockchain data platform Streamr to allow mobile customers monetize their user data and integrate with Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and devices.

Streamr announced its partnership with Nokia and data enterprise platform, OSIsoft on Wednesday at the coindesk consensus conference 2018, while launching its real-time data marketplace for connecting producers and consumers via a common interface.

Japan’s largest trading company, Mitsubishi Corporation, have announced the launch of a pilot program for moving real funds over Ripple’s enterprise blockchain network, RippleNet.

The pilot test will be carried out in collaboration with Standard Chartered Bank, MUFG Bank and its Thai subsidiary Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri), between the accounts of Mitsubishi’s subsidiaries in Thailand and Singapore under the Bank of Thailand Regulatory Sandbox Framework.

Cathy Bessant, chief technical officer of Bank of America (BoA), has reiterated the  bank’s stance on Bitcoin saying that cryptocurrencies are designed to be non-transparent.

In an interview with CNBC’s Squawk Box, Bessant said it’s important to differentiate the two major uses of cryptocurrencies. As a payment system, she thinks cryptocurrencies are troubling because the technology is “designed to be not transparent.”
