General Discussion / Re: Can a country survive without physical currency?
« on: November 21, 2024, 08:11:43 AM »
We're on our way there. These days, people pay using apps or transfer money online. I bet the richest people in the world have never seen their entire wealth physically. A line from a movie I watched before said something like money is now 1s and 0s. Currency depends on the value "assigned" to it. There were times when cowrie shells served as money. Some of the challenges in going entirely digital are: not everyone in the world has access to devices and the internet; cybersecurity; and regulations that would make sure economic stability and inclusivity.

Cryptocurrency discussions / Re: crypto to avoid tax?
« on: November 19, 2024, 09:35:48 AM »
We all dislike taxes, but they're one way for governments to keep countries running. It is what it is. Whether they're using taxes properly or not is another story altogether. It's possible that Paju City or South Korea is discouraging the use of crypto in illegal activities, including evading taxes. That's why they are focused on seizing crypto instead of other assets. Crypto ownership remains legal but citizens need to pay the government what they owe.

Cryptocurrency discussions / Re: Will the bull season continue forever????
« on: November 13, 2024, 07:37:38 AM »
I was tensed to start this topic because of the perspective of some fraction BTC HODLers I came across, with the saying that goes "I will HODL my asset until it's price reach $300k and that will be by January 2025"....
What!!!! Could this really be as it seems....

I begin to wonder if some calibre of people take the Crypto market as a magical land where you makes wishes and they come through... Believing that as the market is experiencing green candles and uptrends, it is likely to continue it forever.... Forgetting that there are factors that determines the trend of the market.

I also see most analyst speculating the price of BTC to touch $100k before the end of the year which is most likely possible... And most HODLers are willing to sell at this price range simply meaning that the market will experience some little down trend after such sell off. Giving rise to the bearish season and it will likely stay for a period of time before another bull run.

In conclusion, most people tend to give speculations that are not real and may likely persuade newbies to fall into some risks that may take a longer time to be retraced..
That's the reason it is always advised to DYOR before diving into any aspect of crypto..

Your thoughts..

We can't totally blame those who are super positive about Bitcoin's price the way it's going these past few days. Yes, newbies may fall into some risks if they put stock in such statements. But with information on cryptocurrency literally at the tip of our fingers, it's on them if they blindly believe in predictions. Just like anything in life, the reality is nothing lasts forever.

Economics , Sociology & Politics / Re: elon musk's role revealed
« on: November 13, 2024, 07:28:38 AM »
It is typical in politics to give top supporters government positions or other forms of reward. I just find it ironic that a new department has to be created to fight inefficiency. Isn't it just adding to an already overburdened system of bureaucracy?

Quoting from the article: "Musk has never worked for the federal government before. But his various companies have billions of dollars in government contracts, including with space, military and intelligence agencies. That has prompted concern among watchdog groups that his cost-cutting efforts – and influence on Trump – could create conflicts of interest and lessen oversight of his companies." I agree with this concern that it could create conflicts of interest. If Elon has military contracts, and it has the biggest budget allocation, will he cut costs in defense?

Wanting to change things with an "entrepreneurial approach" is a good move, but Elon may not be the best person for the job as evidenced by his latest business decisions.

Another quote: "As a candidate, Ramaswamy advocated for the shutdown of federal government agencies including the FBI, Department of Education and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission." I'm scared for Americans if Ramaswamy continues to advocate for the shutting down of these entities. I don't see anything good coming from closing down a major law enforcement agency and the department in charge of children's education.

I've read there are efforts or initiatives looking for a happy medium. An example is the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). MiCA is planning to make guidelines to protect investors and prevent illicit activities while fostering innovation and decentralization. I think it's important that regulators collaborate with crypto industry folks in creating policies that respect decentralization and protect crypto owners as well.

If the job offer paid well, even without a degree, I would pick the job and go to school part-time as I believe in the value of education. For others, it would depend on where they are. In many countries, most jobs require a college degree and they may have little choice.

I'm not addicted and don't feel the need to keep on checking if there are new coins.

It IS possible to get addicted to crypto trading or investing. You're addicted if you have the compulsive need to invest or trade despite its effects on your finances and relationships, and you feel like you're unable to go with your daily routine unless you buy or sell. (I have a background in Psychology)

So far from the replies I've read, everyone seems to have their heads straight. ;)

Americans would need to think about whether Trump is truly pro-crypto. Is it just a line he's using to get more voters? Or is he and his family in it for their own gain? It's so disappointing, especially knowing how many crypto owners are hoping for more support from the government.

It should be said that JH didn't throw the HDD in the trash, his girlfriend/wife did it - but only because he valued BTC so much (at that time) that he kept that HDD in a drawer in an easily accessible place.

It's obvious he still values (loves!) it until now. Can't really blame him as the value of those Bitcoins is almost half a billion pounds. The reality is, how sure is he that the hard drive is still working after all these years? If by some miracle, the council approves the excavation and he finds the hard drive but it's corrupted, how can he pay the excavation cost? He's even willing to give away 10% of the value. But all this is based on IF he gets the hard drive.

Basic Questions about Cryptos / Re: Let's enjoy what this forum offers.
« on: October 14, 2024, 05:43:09 AM »
I read articles to educate myself about crypto. What I like about this forum is I also get insights coming from users' real-life experiences. It's a safe place (for the most part) to ask questions, know more, and learn.

12
It's usually critics of crypto who would say this, mainly because crypto doesn't operate traditionally. Crypto isn't tied to assets like gold and is decentralized. Its value comes from use cases or utility, market demand, user consensus, and potential for innovation and adoption.

Crypto Wallets / Re: HODLers, do you use paper wallets?
« on: October 10, 2024, 09:37:25 AM »
I find it amusing you're discussing paper and hardware wallets while you have a web wallet displayed din your sig!
So how can you even talk about the drawbacks of paper wallets when you're entrusting your funds to third-party care? Especially one known to have hiccups and lost funds?

It does sound contradictory, but I thought one of the forum's purposes was to gather insights from others. I actually use different types of wallets. I was just curious to know if there are people who still use paper wallets. And from the replies, I did learn something new.

There are many similar arguments for or against AI during the Industrial Revolution, especially about labor and gains in productivity. There are jobs that will certainly be affected by AI such as those involving routine tasks. Other jobs will evolve. Those that require creativity, emotional connection, and complex problem-solving will continue to be sought after. It is difficult to stop progress, even if it initially seems to be a bad thing. The best we can do is learn more about AI, find out how we can upskill, and adapt to living with AI.

Crypto Wallets / HODLers, do you use paper wallets?
« on: October 09, 2024, 07:19:26 AM »
I only ask those who hold crypto for the long term because I know those who frequently trade will find paper wallets inefficient. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Many articles I've read recommend paper wallets because they allow you to store your keys offline. We are all familiar with the risks related to hot wallets and even hardware wallets have issues. With paper wallets' biggest drawbacks of loss and damage, will you continue to use them?
